1 VAC 2015 Summer Assignments In order for you to reinforce the skills and ideas that you have learned this past school year and to keep up your momentum in the building of your portfolio, it is important to complete the assignments listed below. You must turn these completed works at the end of the first week of in the fall. Do not take these assignments lightly. Successful completion of the work can result in very important contributions to your VAC art portfolio.

2 Keep in mind the three following attributes that should be reflected in your finished work. CREATIVITY: COMPLEXITY: develop and express original and interesting ideas solve the problems pushing toward strong resolved compositions COMPETENCY: control the media and reolve the composition effectively

3 EACH OF THESE WORKS SHOULD TAKE SEVERAL HOURS TO COMPLETE. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO MAKE REVISIONS IN YOUR WORK OR IF NECESSARY, START OVER. USE A DIFFERENT APPROACH IN MEDIA FOR EACH ASSIGNMENT. STRIVE FOR HIGH QUALITY WORK THAT YOU WILL BE PROUD TO HAVE IN YOUR PORTFOLIO. DO NOT BE SATISFIED WITH SHORTCUTS.

4 Assignment #1 Summer Night Drawing or Painting: on a Black Canvas or Board (paint, pastel or oil pastel) Create a drawing or painting of a nocturnal or night scene on a black surface.

10 Walsh 1992 Ritchie 2011 Consider how to reveal the space by revealing the light and color of architectural or natural forms and showing a clear understanding balance, color harmony, point of view and a moment of emphasis. It is best to create from direct observation but using your own photograph is acceptable. (Materials: black surface canvas or board, paint, oil pastel or colored pencil)

11 Assignment #2: The best or worst day of your summer Graphic Novel Style or mixed medium collage solution. PICK ONE SOLUTION Graphic Novel Approach: Students are asked to design and create a multiple framed cartoon page of a day in your life as depicted in a Graphic Novel. Students can work in a realistic or simplified cartoon style.

12 Assignment #2: The best or worst day of your summer Mixed Medium Collage: A collage mixed medium illustration (Similar to Q3 assignment of A day in the VAC work can imitate the style of Journal Junkies David Modler (Materials: Mixed collage and drawing materials)

13 Assignment #3: Thing that go Bump in the Night Interior Bedroom with Dramatic Light Source Students will select or invent an interesting interior bedroom space as a subject for a precise observational pencil drawing using a dramatic light source. Design a dynamic, complex, composition with dramatic light and shadow. Consider how the forms, such as, the walls and furniture interact with the dramatic light source. Make sure to include a foreground, middle ground and background. The finished drawing must be refined and resolved with a full range of value and close observation to value, dramatic direction of light and detail. (Materials: ebony pencil or charcoal pencil on white paper (9 x 12 or 18 x 24 )

16 Assignment 4: Wild Card Drawing or Painting on Red/Orange Ground: Students are asked to make a finished portfolio quality work of art using their choice of media, materials and subject matter. The only expectation is student create the work on a red/orange surface. Students make work in a representational, abstracted or illustrative style.
