1 Course Outline CIAO 123 Cleveland Street Orange, NJ Teacher: Mr. Daniel Phone: Course Syllabus Woodworking I Full Year Course COURSE DESCRIPTION: Woodshop 1 is designed to teach students basic woodworking skills and knowledge in preparation for Woodshop 2 and Advance Woodshop course. The first three weeks consist of Planning and Designing in Woodworking, Selecting and Identify Materials, and Woodshop Safety. The reminder of the class provides the students with ability to safely use hand and power tools associated with the use of woodshop, and produce completed take-home projects. PREREQUISITE: No prior requirements for Woodworking 1 Course Goals: Students will: 1) Learn proper shop attire and behavior. 2) Understand the processes of woodworking. 3) Select and identify appropriate tools for each of the processes. 4) Examine principles of measurement. 5) Construct useful projects. 6) Discuss career opportunities and trends related to woodworking. 7) Choose and then create at least six to eight completed projects. 8) Learn and practice finishing. 9) Learn the ethics and responsibilities of a professional craftsman. 10) Have fun!!!!

2 SAFETY: Students will wear approved safety glasses whenever they are in the wood shop. Students will not attempt to operate any equipment until they have passed a safety test, demonstrated operation and watched a demonstration of operation by the instructor of each piece of equipment and or hand power tool. Notes***Safety is the biggest priority in the classroom and nothing and no one will be allowed to jeopardize anyone s safety. At the maximum, three of these violations will be allowed before you will meet with the building principal and recommended to be transferred to another class One where you have less of a chance of causing serious injury to yourself or others. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Lectures Interactive Lectures Demonstration Discussions Problem Solving Cooperative Learning Creative Projects Models Students Presentation Guest Speakers Videos Internet Grading Policy: 25% Class participation, preparedness, attendance and behavior 20% Reading & workbook assignments, worksheets, and projects 30% Practical Work, catering activities, presentations and research projects 25% Section quizzes, chapter tests, certification exams, practical exams Grades will be based on performance in the safety tests and quizzes. In addition, students will be given periodic quizzes to test comprehension of the: text readings, names of the joints, and woodworking jargon. The majority of the grade though, will be based on performance in the shop. Namely, most credit is derived from the quality of the woodworking project. This is a class on woodworking and therefore it is the end product that counts! Attendance Policy: You are expected to be here every day. Each day is an important learning experience. We will be moving quickly through the information because I have so much I need to impart in a very short amount of time. See District Policy if you have further questions. Tardy Policy: See District Policy if you have further questions. Policy for Late Work: Assignment are to be done on time. No late work will be accepted.

3 Homework Policy: The homework given in this class is of the reading variety. Students will be expected to stay caught up with the readings. Quizzes will test comprehension and completion of the readings. Reading assignments will be posted on the front board. Classroom Rules: 1) Treat others and their projects with respect. 2) Follow all safety rules. 3) Take pride in our shop. 4) Ask, if you have a question. Safety Rules: 1) Follow all rules assuring safe operation of the tools. 2) No running in the classroom. 3) No horseplay or wrestling. 4) No fighting or pushing. 5) No foul language. 6) Safety glasses must be worn at all times when using tools. This includes observing others while they work. 7) Ear plugs are optional, but are highly recommended to be worn in the woodshop. Materials Needed for Class: Two sharpened #2 pencils, a tape measure, 1 pair of safety glasses, and ear plugs. Class Fees: Free of charge Miscellaneous: This class is designed to be fun and to put you in control as much as possible. Use this class to your advantage and design projects you are interested in making.
