3 COURSE CONTENT: DESIGNING SKILLS 1 Creativity and innovation. Needs of clients and consumers; Principles of form, function and fitness for purpose. Impact and responsibility designers have on and to society. Analyse and evaluate existing products. Design briefs and specifications Moral, cultural, economic, and social values. Environmental and sustainability issues. Health and safety. Design for product maintenance. Design for manufacturing in quantity. Generating design proposals and modify them in the light of on-going analysis, evaluation and product development.

4 COURSE CONTENT: DESIGNING SKILLS 2 Reflect critically when evaluating and modifying their design ideas. Use range of graphic techniques and ICT (including digital media), including CAD, to generate, develop, model and communicate design proposals. Investigate and select appropriate materials/ ingredients and components; Plan and organise activities which involve the use of materials and components when developing or manufacturing. Devise and apply test procedures to check the quality of their work at critical/key points. Communicate the design proposal. Flexibility and adaptability when designing. Test and evaluate the final design proposal against the design specification. Evaluating the work of other designers to inform your own practice. Working collaboratively as a member of a design team. Protecting design ideas.

11 REQUIRED SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES You should have a passion for the design world, good visual communication skills (be able to draw) and be interested in developing an understanding of the broad perspectives of the design world. Good at problem solving and have good ICT skills. You must be prepared to work in a group and independently. You must also have good time management and personal organization skills, these are essential if deadlines are to be met successfully.

12 FUTURE PATHWAYS There are opportunities to embark on a diverse array of Post 16 studies and careers, these include, Architect, Engineer, Industrial Designer, Product Designer, Lighting designer, Model Maker, Set Designer, Carpenter, Graphic designer (television/games/ magazines), Computer Graphics, Animator, Web Designer, Interior Designer, Cartoonist, Illustrator,
