Discussion of Progress and Forward Plans: Project Leader Brett Chandler (Grant-Prideco) P&NGI - Drilling and production equipment - Recommended Practice for Drill Stem Design and Operating Limits At the time of the 2004 plenary meeting, a CD version of was submitted to the WG1 Convenor and to SC4. This CD version represented a dramatic advancement of the standard relative to previous versions. These advancements resulted from a very active work group and an extensive set of working meetings. In addition, key technical material was donated to the work group including notable technical reports and papers by parties including Varco, Global Santa Fe, BP, Grant-Prideco, Smith, Omsco and others. Mr. Brett Chandler, Project Leader for ISO , has done an excellent job of building and maintaining momentum in the preparation and development of this standard. The CD version that was made available at the May 2004 meeting was reviewed by the SC4 Secretary (API Staff) and it was noted that some further work was needed from an editorial standpoint. In addition, certain sections of the document needed to be completed in terms of technical content. Due to limited resources and a priority to get CD into circulation since it required less work, focused work on CD was deferred until Q3 / Q The CD was successfully compiled for circulation with the circulation initiating on The ISO review period will close on The API ballot / review period will close in order that USA comments can be integrated into the ISO review period. At this time of this report, this ballot period remains active. Based on some discussions to date however with API staff, it is likely that CD will have to be split into a different structure perhaps with an annex or an accompanying Technical Report in order to accommodate both the guideline materials needed to replace API RP 7G and to make the technical reference information available to the users of the standard as well Project Leader Joe Mackin (International Pipe Inspectors Association) P&NGI - Drilling and production equipment - Recommended Practice for Inspection and Classification of Used Drill Stem Elements At the time of the 2004 plenary meeting, CD had been prepared and was submitted by the subject WG to WG1 and the SC4 secretary. Review of that CD following the May 2004 plenary meeting indicated that some editorial work was needed prior to circulating the document

3 as a CD. The SC4 secretary (API Staff) worked diligently with the project leader to address those editorial concerns. This included working meetings at the June 2004 API / ISO standardization meetings in Dallas. This editorial work continued for some time and with the focused work of Ms. Jennifer Moyer-Kelly of API Staff, CD was circulated for CD review on with a closing date for comments of Significant comments (~60 pages) were received as a result of the CD circulation with those comments being fully compiled on The large majority of these comments are editorial. The working group has been holding active meetings to resolve these comments ( , for example) and is working to produce DIS by Progress towards this revision schedule will be monitored in the coming months Project Leader Doyle Brinegar (Smith Services / Drilco Group) P&NGI - Drilling and production equipment - Part 1: Rotary drill stem elements At the time of last year s plenary report, the ISO CS was working to distribute the FDIS for balloting with an estimated circulation date of mid-may The actual circulation date was and the ISO ballot closed on FDIS passed ballot unanimously with 11 affirmative votes out of 11 cast votes. Two (2) p-members (Austria and Sweden) abstained from this vote. A number of comments were submitted with some of the ballots. These comments were reviewed and as appropriate incorporated into the final document. The first edition of ISO was successfully published on The API adopt-back ballot passed with one negative vote in March, Efforts are underway to arrive at a resolution of the negative ballot. The objective of the ongoing resolution is to conclude the API adopt-back ballot such that the API and ISO documents are equivalent Project Leader - Tony Collins (Anadrill / Schlumberger) P&NGI - Drilling and production equipment - Rotary drilling equipment - Part 2: Threading, gauging and testing of rotary shouldered threaded connections At the time of the 2004 plenary report, the DIS circulation has been confirmed by ISO CS to start on and terminate on A large number of comments were made on the DIS ballot and the project leader has been working diligently to work through these comments. Some of the work required to advance this standard is associated with the updating of graphics to comply with ISO directives, etc. To assist the project leader, API Staff and OGP resources have been made available to support in this graphics area. That work has been ongoing. The current plan on is to compile all comments and resolutions and to hold a close meeting at the June standardization conference. Following that June meeting, an FDIS will be submitted for ballot with the intent of publishing prior to year end Current Project Leader Mike McLeod (MH Pyramid Inc.) P&NGI - Drilling and production equipment - Drilling and well servicing structures - Specification The first edition of ISO was subsequently successfully published on This successful publication was due to a number of parties and particularly to Mike McLeod, Ward Turner (ExxonMobil), Neil Reeve (Shell), Mark Trevithick, Ms. Jennifer Moyer-Kelly (API Staff), Steve Wade (ExxonMobil), and Jas Veen (VNR). The ISO Standard summary for ISO 13626:2003 was submitted in July The API adopt-back ballot passed with one negative vote last October. The issues concerned with this negative ballot are still being worked through to a resolution. Most of the comments from the API adopt-back ballot concerned not including

4 the USC units which have since been added editorially. The objective of the ongoing resolution work will be to conclude the API adopt back ballot successfully such that the API and ISO documents are equivalent. This document is complete and published as an ISO standard (ISO 13534: 2000). The document has also been back-adopted as an API specification. API 8B is an exact adoption of ISO 13534: This document is due for ISO systematic review in In addition, there are some known revisions to and ongoing work items for API RP 8B Seventh Edition that need to be evaluated and balloted for incorporation into ISO As a result of these revision areas, a NWI form was prepared by the subject project leader in December The NWI was circulated for ballot on with a closing date of At this time of writing this report ( ), results from this NWI ballot are not known but presumed to be positive Project Leader Alf Henry Aker (DNV) P&NGI - Drilling and production equipment - Hoisting equipment This document is complete and has been published as an ISO standard (ISO 13535: 2000). API 8C, 4th Ed is a Modified Adoption of ISO Currently, the document is due for ISO systematic review in Similar to 13534, there are also a number of areas where review and revisions may be needed in order to keep current with advances on the API side. Such revisions will need to be reviewed in areas such as the API Spec 8C Anned D, the API ballot item on slips (9.8.3), the guide dolly draft, and possibly other areas. As a result of these areas of needed review, a NWI form was prepared by the subject project leader in December The NWI was circulated for ballot on with a closing date of At this time of writing this report ( ), results from this NWI ballot are not known but presumed to be positive Project Leader Ricardo Hernandez P&NGI - Drilling and production equipment - Drilling equipment Prior to the 2004 plenary meeting, ISO had been successfully published on ISO will thus require ISO systematic review in Following the publication of ISO 14693:2003, the standard was balloted for back adoption by API. This API ballot was finalized on during the summer standardization meetings. The API Task Group voted to back adopt ISO 14693:2003 as the fourth edition (4 th ed.) of API 7K. There are some work items ongoing in the API Task Group which may mature into revisions that will be needed on both the ISO and API standards. These revisions will be addressed when they are nearing completion in terms of technical consensus. 4. Meetings since Last Report No full meetings of SC4/WG1 have been held since the last SC4 plenary meeting. Numerous WG meetings have been held on the various active projects.
