2 IMPORTANT NOTES ON THERMAL PRINTER HANDLING I order to preserve the life of the priter, it is ecessary to keep i mid some precautios o the hadlig of the TS1700 priter. Please read carefully the followig poits i order to make a good use of the priter SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Before usig the priter, read carefully sectio - INSTALLATION. NEVER coect the exteral power supply with the wrog polarity. This could permaetly damage the priter. Tur off the priter immediately if it produces smoke, a strage smell or a uusual oise. Keepig o usig the priter could cause fire. Uplug the equipmet immediately ad cotact your official distributor. NEVER coect cables with differet coectors from the oes metioed i this maual. Failig o doig so could permaetly damage the priter. Use a power supply whose output voltage is withi the specificatio rage stated i this maual. Over voltage ca permaetly damage the priter. Uder voltage ca cause malfuctios. NEVER wet TS1700 thermal priter with water or ay other liquid. If ay liquid is spilled iside the equipmet, uplug the power cable immediately ad cotact the techical service. Make sure the priter is o a steady, securely fixed surface. If the priter falls dow, it could break or damage. NEVER use the priter i high humidity or i locatios with high risk of fire. NEVER place heavy objects o top of the priter ad ever lea o it. NEVER put ay object iside of the priter, as it could cause hardware damage o it, such as short-circuit, prit head breakig or geeral failure of the priter. NEVER shake the priter. NEVER disassemble or modify the hardware of the priter. NEVER try to repair the priter. Please cotact your official distributor i case of failure. As the priter cotais electromagets (iside of the motor), it should ot be used i excessively dirty eviromets or places with dust or metal particles. NEVER prit without paper loaded or without the cover closed, as the thermal prit head life ca be highly shorteed. NEVER pull the paper out whe the cover is closed. Use the paper advace butto istead. Avoid touchig accessible parts with metallic objects, such as screwdrivers or tweezers, the prit head thermal elemets as well as the electroic prited circuit. They are delicate parts. NEVER touch with bare hads the areas aroud the prit head ad the motor surface as they become very hot durig ad just after pritig; wait 15 secods after pritig to let them cool dow. NEVER touch the surfaces of the prit head thermal elemets or the electroic prited circuit, as dust ad dirt ca stick to their surface ad cause damage by electrostatic discharge. Moreover, some electroic compoets ca get very hot durig operatio. The thermal paper cotais Na+, K+ ad Cl- ios that ca cause harm to the prit head elemets. Therefore, use oly the specified paper. If the priter has ot bee used for log period of time ad the paper was loaded, the paper could become deformed by the drive roller pressure. It is recommeded to make it advace at least 30 mm before pritig agai. For safety reasos, uplug the priter if it is ot goig to be used over a log period of time. Do ot prit cotiuously (without stoppig) for more tha 6 miutes. 4/62

2.2. ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM RATINGS Supply voltage VDC Operatig temperature rage C to 70 C Storage temperature rage C to 75 C 2.3. CLEANING PROCEDURE AND PRECAUTIONS I order to clea the thermal prit head, proceed as idicated by the followig steps: 1- Uplug the power supply cable ad ope the cutter uit. See sectio OPEN THE CUTTER UNIT. 2- Pull the paper lever i order to release the plate. 3- Soak a cotto spoge i alcohol (ethaol, methaol or IPA), ad rub it getly alog the thermal head i order to remove the possible accumulatio of paper particles. 4- Wait for alcohol to evaporate before isertig the paper roll ad closig the cover. FENIX recommeds cleaig the thermal prit head periodically (every 2 or 3 moths) i order to keep a optimal prit quality. NOTES: The prit head may be hot after pritig. Make sure it has thoroughly cooled dow before proceedig to clea it. Never touch the thermal elemets of the prit head with your hads. Never use metallic or piercig elemets to clea the prit head, as they could scratch it. Fig.2.1. Thermal prit head cleaig RECOMMENDATIONS The plug has to be located ear the priter ad has to be easily obtaiable. Before coectig ay commuicatio data cable, check the priter is workig properly by executig the self-test. Set the TS1700 i a place where the coectio cables do ot suffer stretchig or cross with each other. IMPORTANT!!! Sice the priter demads high curret peaks durig operatio it is advisable to make the power supply cables the shortest possible. 5/62

4 INSTALLATION 4.1. TS1700/TK18 INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS There are some geeral cosideratios to take ito accout whe istallig the TS1700/TK18 priter. A wrog istallatio may cause may issues like paper jam, difficult maiteace of the priter, difficulty i chagig the paper roll, etc. Moreover, a correct istallatio ca prevet the priter from beig damaged by exteral agets, such as weather or vadalism. This priter is desiged to be istalled vertically or horizotally i a case, closet, or aother kid of appropriate chassis. The basic poits that a correct istallatio must follow are: Allow eough room ad accessibility to reach the maiteace procedure poits i case it is eeded. Take otice all user accessible parts i the priter. Smooth exit of the ticket. Prevet problems with static electricity due to the ature of the used materials. Be sure to make a good earth coectio. Sice the priter is placed very close the user s chassis, some system must be implemeted i order to move the priter whe accessig the pritig head (i.e. givig the fixig holes of the chassis a oval shape to allow the priter movig forward ad backward). Fig TS1700 ope. 9/62

TS1700 priter comes i two differet versios: right agle or straight (See APPENDIX HOW TO ORDER - ACCESSORIES). Both have the same paper output but the paper iput is differet as it is show i the figures below. TS1700 paper iputs ad accessibility MOUNTING THE PRINTER The TS1700 priter has 2 tabs ad 2 holes so that the user ca fix it o a chassis with screws or rivets. I most cases, give that the TS1700 priter is very light, fixig through the tabs may be eough, like i TK18 assembly. Fig.4.3. TS1700 Fixig holes. 10/62

The TK18 priter is basically a paper support adapted to the TS1700 priter, which ca facilitate the itegratio of the priter i aother system. Accepts rolls up to 80mm diameter ad has a small platform that helps automatic paper loadig. The TK18 priter also icludes i the assembly the paper ear-ed sesor. I the TK18 priter, oly is possible to istall the TS1700 with straight paper iput. Fig.4.4. TK18 = TS paper support. The TK18 has 3 holes to fix ad it ca be mouted horizotally or vertically. Fig.4.5. 13 4.3. POWER SUPPLY The TS1700 is powered by a exteral power supply by meas of four pis of the shared coector that is also used for RS232 commuicatio, photo sesors ad digital output. Although the coector is polarized, if forced it could be coected iverted so it is very importat to observe polarity before pluggig the coector i. Fig.4.9. Power supply coector J1. Pi umber 1, 2 4, 6 Descriptio VIN (12V to 24V DC) GND The power supply female coector must be a: Housig: PHDR-18VS (JST Ref.) Termial: SPHD-001T-P0.5 or equivalet. Wire: 22 AWG or thicker (GND & VIN) NOTES: (1) (2) (3) If the umber of dots that are eergized at the same time is icreased, a higher curret will flow; therefore, a power supply with a adequate curret capability must be used. Whe desigig lies ad bit images, take the pritig ratio ad prit duty ito cosideratio. Prit quality may be poor if the pritig ratio (eergizig pulses/dot lie) or prit duty is high. Average eergizig pulse width is defied as 64 of 192 dots/dot lie that are eergized. WARNING: Beware ot to ivert the polarity of power supply. This may irremediably damage the priter. Esure that the voltage is the correct oe. Use the 4 termials (4 wires) with 0.35mm² miimum sectio each. NOTE ABOUT POWER SUPPLY: The curret demad depeds o the desity of the pritout. A 60W power supply covers all adverse possibility (see sectio - ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATIONS). FENIX offers differet power supplies as a accessory optio (See APPENDIX HOW TO ORDER). 13/62

The fuctio of this sesor is to war the maiteace operator that the priter is ruig out of paper although there is still paper to prit few tickets. This sesor must be eabled whe istalled o the priter. A example of istallig this sesor ca be fix it ear the paper axis, as show i the followig picture cocerig the TK18 priter. Fig Paper ear-ed sesor istallatio example (TK18). 2- Ticket picked up sesor. The target of this sesor is to iform to system (priter host) if the ticket prited has bee or ot picked up by the user. For example, it will blik a error patter whe a ticket has bee prited but the user has ot picked it up ad it could cause a paper jam if aother ticket is prited 3- Black mark sesor. It is used whe pritig tickets oto a pre-cut paper roll which have a black mark o each ticket. This sesor will help the priter to locate the edges of the ticket ad prit accordigly. The black mark ca also be a hole. This sesor must be eabled whe istalled o the priter. For the latter 2 cases, FENIX offers a optioal bracket that allows several optios for moutig the photo-sesors FCX2. Accordig to the positioig of the sesor i the bracket, ca be mouted uder (1) or above (2), allowig the sesor is more or less removed from the paper exit. Accordig to the positioig of the bracket o the TS1700, optical mark detectio or ticket pick up becomes possible o both sides of the paper: the prited oe (A) or the back oe (B). The sesor PCB ca be attached by screw + ut or glued (double-sided adhesive, heat-fusio silicoe, etc.). The scope of the sesor is about 10mm. 16/62

The digital output ca be triggered either by ay of the error evets or ca be activated istataeously usig the same commad: DC3 p m to toff. The digital output provides a sigal that ca blik or stay stable for up to 16 cycles. I case that a blikig output is preferred, the time the output stays o ad off are also programmable. 17/62

Fig Digital output examples. The trasistor's output capability is: Vco = 45V, IC = 100mA. Values beyod this absolute maximum ratigs could result i a permaet damage of the device. 5 BASIC OPERATIONS 5.1. PAPER LOADING There are maily two ways of loadig paper: automatic ad maual. I ay case, before startig the paper load sequece, please make sure the paper roll has bee placed i the right way Automatic paper loadig Make sure the TS1700 is power supplied. Remove ay rest of paper if there is ay Make sure that the plate is closed. Make sure the paper ed is cut i a straight way. Thread the paper roll with the right orietatio as show i the ext figure. The thermal paper has oly oe pritig side (thermal side). If there are doubt about which oe is the pritig side, just scratch the paper ad the thermal side will show up the track o. 6. Oce the priter has detected the paper, it will automatically start the paper load sequece which cosist of feedig few millimeters of paper at a very low speed. Note: ruig at low speed, the motor will be oisier. Thermal side Fig.5.1. Automatic paper loadig. 18/62

Maual paper loadig To perform the maual paper load operatio thread the paper ito the paper iput. The tur the paper kob clock-wise to feed paper ito the paper path. It is possible also to load the paper by raisig the cutter uit ad the plate. Fig.5.2. Maual paper loadig OPEN CUTTER UNIT Sometimes is could be required to rise the cutter uit for maiteace operatios as cleaig the pritig head, removig a paper jam, etc. (1) Simply lift the cutter up to keep fixig it up. (2) If it is ecessary to ope the prit head also, pull up the paper roller lever. (3) Fially, if is there ay rest of paper iside the priter mechaism it ca be removed by pushig it from the paper iput ozzle with aother paper or by turig the paper roller kob clock-wise Fig.5.3. Ope cutter uit. 19/62

5.3. BUTTON FUNCTIONS Fig.5.4. TS1700 butto. The o-board butto has the followig fuctios: PAPER FEEDING: whe the priter is powered o pressig the butto will feed the paper. The paper roller will ot move uder the followig coditios: - The paper roll ed sesor detects a paper ed. - Whe the door is ope. - Whe aother o-recoverable error is preset. SELF-TEST MODE: If pressed o start-up with the door closed, it activates this mode. HEXADECIMAL MODE: I order to activate it, if the butto is still pressed whe the full Selftest has bee prited, the priter will prompt the user to hold the butto to eter this mode. If we do ot hold the butto i the ext 3 secods, the priter will exit to ormal operatio PAPER SENSOR The TS1700 has a itegrated photo-sesor for out of paper detectio. The out of paper sesor has the basic fuctio of iformig the priter cotroller about the existece of paper (o the pritig lie). Because there are some actios (as a example, pritig without paper) that could seriously damage the mechaism, this error blocks all the priter activities. Fial user ca detect this errors by the LED blikig patter ad the applicatio developer ca test them through the DEL EOT commad, beig able to act accordigly. This error evets ca be also associated to the digital output i a way that whe it is triggered it is possible to switch a exteral device OPEN-PLATEN SENSOR The TS1700 has a itegrated photo-sesor to detect the opeig of the plate. The operatio i case this error is detected is basically the same as the precedig error. NOTE: If TS1700 detects o paper or plate ope while is pritig it will stop the commuicatio i order ot loose ay data OPTIONAL SENSORS There is also optio for three more sesors as described i sectio - PHOTO-SENSORS. These are ear-ed paper sesor, 'ticket picked-up' sesor ad 'black mark' sesor. Near-ed-paper sesor detects whe the paper roll is ear its ed of file. This error, by default, does ot stop pritig, but through the ESC c 4 commad, it ca be achieved that the ear-ed paper detectio stops the pritig. Sice o mechaical solutio is provided for the istallatio of this sesor depedig how it is mouted it will detect a quatity of remaiig paper i the roll. Fial user ca detect these errors by the LED blikig patter, ad the applicatio developer ca test them through the DEL EOT commad, beig able to act accordigly. This evet ca be also associated to the digital output i a way that whe it is triggered it is possible to switch a exteral device. 20/62

Ticket picked-up sesor is used to detect that a ticket has bee prited but ot picked up. I order to do so is has to be istalled i a appropriate paper ozzle or preseter. Fial user ca detect these errors by the LED blikig patter, ad the applicatio developer ca test them through the DEL EOT commad, beig able to act accordigly. This evet ca be also associated to the digital output i a way that whe it is triggered it is possible to switch a exteral device as a beeper. Black-mark sesor detects the black mark of a pre-cut paper roll so, if the priter is cofigured correctly ad the black-mark optio is eabled the priter could cut the paper by its pre-cut edge ad prit the ticket i the physical space that it is iteded to Black mark sesor The TS1700 has a optioal specific sesor for optical (black) mark detectio. (See APPENDIX HOW TO ORDER) BM distace ticket legth I order to be able of usig this feature, the optical mark sesor must be eabled by programmig commad (See commad DC3 ESC FS GS). The commad that sets black mark offsets (GS ( G) require two parameters that must be measured physically o the ticket: ticket legth which is the distace betwee two cosecutive cuttig lies, ad distace from black mark to ext cuttig lie. This parameters will be saved ito o-volatile memory. This commad takes ito accout the distace from the black mark sesor ad the cutter blade which is fixed i a particular assembly. For this reaso, this distace must be kept if a differet implemetatio is take. Pritig directio Fig Black mark programmig parameters. The back surface spectral reflectivity should be 4% ad below. The black mark may be replaced by a hole i the paper. Whe the black mark photo-sesor is eabled, the behavior of the priter will chage i the followig way: Whe pressig the paper feed butto the priter will feed paper to the ext cuttig lie accordig to the ticket legth parameter set with the GS ( G commad (See SECTION CONTROL COMMANDS) ad the it will cut the paper. Whe sedig ay cut commad to the priter will do the same as above. Whe sedig a GS FF commad to the priter it will feed paper to the ext cuttig lie. If the priter detects that paper has bee fed for a distace larger that the ticket legth without havig cut the paper, it will pop a black mark error. 21/62

The first ticket should be discarded sice the priter caot estimate the distace to the ext cuttig lie util it has detect at least oe black mark LED INDICATOR The TS1700 has oe idicator led to visually iform about the priter status. Whe the LED lights or blik GREEN meas ormal operatio. The LED bliks ORANGE whether the TS1700 has detect a o-recoverable error. The LED bliks RED whe a recoverable error has bee occurred. If the lights RED, there is o paper or the door has bee opeed. See sectio 5.9- ERROR PROCESSING SPECIAL PRINTING MODES Besides the ormal pritig mode i which all the received data are prited accordig to the settigs or coditios fixed by the commads, the TS1700 priter allows three special workig modes: self-test mode, programmig mode ad the hexadecimal mode Self-test mode The priter provides the selftest mode with two differet fuctioality: showig iformatio of the settigs of that particular priter model ad verifyig the pritig. To eter the self-test mode, the priter must be powered o while keepig pressig the butto. The TS1700 will start pritig a report, which allows checkig the features of this particular model, like the firmware curret versio, cotrol fuctios of the commuicatios protocol, ad so o. Oce this pritig has bee fiished, if the butto is kept pressed; the priter will start pritig cotiuously ad repetitively a character patter util it fially cocludes the self-test by pritig * * completed * *.
