2 1 Overview The EMC140X series of devices are SMBus temperature sesors with THERM ad ALERT outputs. The EMC142X series of devices have Hardware Thermal Shutdow outputs i place of THERM. The EMC1402 ad EMC1422 each moitor oe iteral diode ad oe exterally coected temperature diode.the EMC1403 ad EMC1423 each moitor oe iteral diode ad two exterally coected temperature diodes. Ad fially, the EMC1404 ad EMC1424 each moitor oe iteral diode ad up to three exterally coected temperature diodes. All of the modes ad fuctios of the EMC140X/2X ca be tested ad observed with the EVB- EMC14XX. The EVB-EMC14XX is a USB-based platform for evaluatig all variatios of the EMC140X/2X. 3 2 Gettig Started 2.1 System Requiremets To use the EVB you will eed: A PC ruig Widows 2000 or XP Display resolutio 800x600 (or larger to view several widows simultaeously) A available USB port 2.2 Feature Summary The SMSC Chip Maager (ChipMa) applicatio allows viewig ad chagig register values Graphig of ay register Headers for coectig a remote diode or CPU/GPU Resistace Error Correctio verificatio Savig of settigs of all registers allowig for quick loadig at a later time USB commuicatio to evaluatio board A exteral SMBus master may also be used via jumper settigs 2.3 Istallig the EVB 1. Istall the Chip Maager applicatio ad device driver o a PC by ruig Setup.exe from the Chip Maager distributio CD. A revisio history ad istall/u-istall otes may be foud i the readme.txt file o the disk. 2. Coect the supplied USB cable to a available USB port o the PC. Plug the mii-b ed of the USB cable ito EVB coector P6. The +3.3V ad Bridge ACT LEDs should illumiate. After the EVB is coected to the PC the Fid New Hardware wizard will pop up for USB driver istallatio. Follow the istructios i the readme.txt file to complete the istallatio process. 3. Start the EVB Software by selectig the Chip Maager applicatio from the SMSC folder from the Programs Widows Start meu. The EVB will iitialize ad the Chip Maager Quick Help scree will appear as i Figure 2.1. The USBAct LED should be blikig whe the Chip Maager is ruig. For more help with Chip Maager, select Help -> Cotets for a html based help documet as show i Figure 2.2. Note: The SMSC Chip Maager applicatio allows viewig ad chagig register values for a variety of EVBs icludig the EMC1001, EMC1002, EMC1023, EMC1033 ad EMC2101. The Chip Maager software oly eeds to be istalled oce to support all of these EVBs. The list of supported EVBs may be foud i the pulldow meu uder Optios -> Select Device. 3

6 2.4 Board Layout The EVB was desiged for ease of use ad user experimetatio with easily accessible jumpers ad access to the SMBus data lies. Figure 2.3 below shows the silk-scree for the EVB-EMC14XX. Figure 2.3 EVB-EMC14XX Board Outlie ad Silk-scree 6

7 3 Hardware Descriptio 3.1 Itroductio The EVB-EMC14XX provides the meas to demostrate all of the EMC140X/2X features ad to view ad modify registers. LEDs idicate status iformatio ad test poits are icluded to moitor system voltages with a user provided voltmeter or oscilloscope. 3.2 EMC140X/2X Devices A total of four of six SMSC devices are o-board the EVB-EMC14XX. Jumpers eable which versio is active o the EVB. Please cotact SMSC for boards with the EMC1423 or EMC1424 devices. 3.3 USB to SMBus Bridge The USB to SMBus bridge is based o a 8051 micro cotroller with itegrated USB ad SMBus iterfaces as well as iteral flash ad RAM. Durig EVB maufacture, firmware is loaded ito the bridge that provides the iterface betwee the USB ad the SMBus. Power is sourced to the micro cotroller from the USB iterface for device power ad commuicatio Direct SMBus Coect Optio It is also possible to coect a exteral SMBus master to the EVB-EMC14XX. A few jumper settigs are all that is required to drive the ay oe of the devices o-board the EVB: Simply remove the jumpers o JP6 ad coect the SMBus master to the SCL, SDA ad ALERT pis, as well as a exteral supply for +3.3V. The +3.3V ca be supplied by the SMBus bridge by leavig the +3.3V jumper i place ad retaiig the USB coectio. 3.4 Coectig to Remote Diodes This EVB is populated with jumpers to coect to a exteral diode or CPU/GPU. If coectig to a CPU s thermal diode, it is ecessary to provide a commo groud. Also, it is usually ecessary to bias the appropriate CPU Vcc plae above this commo groud to avoid forward-biasig the ESD diodes with the temperature sesor sigals. These coectios have bee provided o JP11 which is read by EMC1422. Cosult the CPU maufacturer s datasheet for guidace o iterfacig to the thermal diode. Refer to the schematic EMC14XX_EVB_SCH-7092-A.pdf for details o the EVB header coectios. 3.5 Resistace Error Correctio (REC) The remote diode DN sigal path has a 100 ohm series resistor to demostrate the EMC140X/2X s REC feature. See Table 3.3 for details o the REC jumper settigs. 3.6 Power Source This EVB requires oly oe USB coectio to power the etire board. The USB-SMBus bridge regulates the +5V USB power to +3.3V used by the EMC140X/2X ad other EVB circuitry. 3.7 Test Poits Test poits are provided for: Groud +3.3V power +5V_USB power ALERT, THERM, ad SYS_SHDN outputs 7

The first jumper the user should coect is the device eable jumper. This jumper will determie which of the 6 devices will be powered up ad evaluated. Checkig the REC (Resistace Error Correctio) feature of the EMC1402 is accomplished by settig the jumper o JP16 as show i Table 3.3. A ope jumper adds 100 ohms of series resistace to the DN lie of the diode coectio. To retur to 0 ohm series resistace, replace the jumper o JP16. This feature 8

9 is demostrated o the EMC1402 oly. However, each device of the EMC140X/2X family has this feature. This is doe by removig both jumpers of the device of iterest. The coect Pi 1 to the remote+ termial of the remote diode ad Pi 3 to the remote- termial of the remote diode. Make sure a commo groud exists betwee the remote diode (GPU, etc.) ad the EMC140X/2X EVB. Also esure that the remote diode is properly biased accordig to the diode maufacture. Oe remote coectio is provided per EMC140X/2X device. 11 A uique feature of the EMC142X series of devices is the ability to select the Hardware System shutdow temperature based o the pull up resistor o the ALERT ad SYS_SHDN outputs. The EVB allows the user to quickly evaluate each of the 36 temperature values by adjustig JP18 ad JP17 as show i Table 3.6. The Help screes ca be displayed at ay time by selectig Help from the meubar. Chip Maager eables the user to display temperature readigs, set temperature limits ad read/write cofiguratio register values. 4.2 Temperature/Register History Graph To ope a Temperature or Register History Graph widow, select the register or registers to plot i the Chip Maager applicatio. the select Optios -> Plot Register Data from the meubar. Oce the graph appears, select Cotrol -> Start to begi plottig data. The history plot cotiuously updates the register data reported by the EMC140X/2X.
