1 October's Sampler of the Month I just love Tracy's birds! This tiny, tiny sampler (62s x 51h) from Tracy/Hands to Work is a most charming and whimsical design. Our framed model of "Forbeare Not Sowing" has been stitched on Lakeside's 40-count linen with Belle Soie ~ the beautiful hand-grained frame was done especially for this project by CathyCampbell/Primitive Traditions from the last of her moulding stock that remained from her previous life, and we are thrilled to be able to offer it as part of our October Sampler of the Month. 2 ... our Second Spectacular Sampler Symposium (the first one was in January 2005 if you missed it). Here's the incomparable faculty for this very special weekend, Friday, November 14, 6 p.m. through mid-day on Sunday, November 16: Barb and Alma of Blackbird Designs Tina and Teri of Shepherd's Bush ASU English Professor Dr. Maureen Daly Goggin specializing in Rhetoric SANQ author, sampler lover and collector, reproductionist, and journalist Vickie LoPiccolo Jennett of NeedleWorkPress All events (except Saturday night's reception) are being held at Mesa's Dobson Ranch Inn, The room block set aside for this event has been extended for an additional week (just mention Attic Needlework ), so don't delay if you haven't already made your room reservations. The room rate for a single/double is $95. There are a few remaining openings, and we hope that you can spend this special weekend with us learning and stitching and laughing and eating and developing new friendships along with a greater appreciation for a few who came before us in our needlework journey ~ and for those who enrich our journey today. Your $350 fee includes all classes, kits and class materials, Friday night supper, Saturday and Sunday lunches, Saturday night reception, and a few special surprises. A non-refundable deposit of $175 will secure your spot ~ the balance of the fee is due on or before November 1. Registration is limited by the size of the Pagoda Room at the Dobson Ranch, so don't delay. The schedule for the weekend is: Friday night 6-7 p.m. - Dr. Goggin's lecture and slideshow, "Marking Time: Janie Terrero's 1912 Embroidered English Suffrage Signature Handkerchief" In the early evening of March 1, 1912, several hundred WSPU (Women s Social and Political Union) suffragettes engaged in a vigorous window-smashing campaign throughout London and the greater London area to call attention to the women s cause and to bring pressure to bear on politicians who were poised to vote on a suffrage bill. Among the over 200 women arrested, Janie Terrero was put into custody. While incarcerated in Holloway Prison, London, she stitched a signature handkerchief to mark the second of two hunger strikes that year by suffragettes in prison. She collected twenty signatures of the women who shared her cell block and who had participated in both strikes, and carefully chain stitched their names. Maureen Daly Goggin shows how Terrero s handkerchief represents a powerful twist on the friendship

3 handkerchiefs and quilts that were popular at that time as it served as an activity of political resistance and purposeful construction of suffragette identity in the choice of fabric, colors, and stitches 7:30-9 p.m. - Lecture and Demonstration with Barb and Alma of Blackbird Designs Love the worn look and feel of antique samplers? Unfinished projects packed away in plastic bags that you know you will not get done in this lifetime? Samplers finished, but not yet framed? Let s have some fun and explore ways to create new finished projects. Bring an unfinished project and meet with Barb and Alma of Blackbird Designs. They will demonstrate their color removal and overdyeing process of fabric and samplers. Many examples will be shown of how one finished sampler can be used for many other projects. Saturday 9-10 a.m. - Dr. Goggin's lecture and slideshow, "Elizabeth Parker's Story and circa 1830 Sampler Through The Eye of a Needle" In 1830, Elizabeth Parker, daughter of a day laborer and teacher of Ashburnham, East Sussex, England, cross-stitched a memoir of her then brief life of some seventeen years. In these lines, Parker relates a story of sexual violation and physical abuse at the hands of her employer, Lt. G. After suturing 46 lines, 1,722 words, and 6,699 characters, she stops mid-line and mid-way down her cloth with the powerful plea, What will become of my soul[?] Maureen Daly Goggin s research unravels the mysteries of Parker s life and her sampler. 10:15-11:45 - "Inked in Silk" ~ included in this presentation by Vickie LoPiccolo Jennett will be a wonderful sampler Vickie's designed which incorporates one of the hundreds of verses she's collected over the years - here's a snippet of Vickie's design and a snippet of the verse: Sunday "Tis friends who make this desert world... 4 Saturday night, November 22, 6 ~ 8 p.m. Our 11th Annual Silent Auction for Breast Cancer Research is only weeks away! We have already received nearly a hundred beautifully created ornaments and other items, including needlework smalls and holiday decorations. Alice has donated dozens of her beautifully handmade ornaments, wall hangings, and her own "Care Bear." Kay has made a very special and beautiful little tote for that special daughter or granddaughter, with surprises inside, and a larger tote for Mom or Grandmother ~ or you! In a few weeks we'll photograph all of the donations received to date. Put this date on your calendar and please plan to join us for this very worthwhile event, always held the Saturday evening before Thanksgiving. As always, all of the proceeds go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Here is their mission, as posted on their Web site: Our mission is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and translational research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing public awareness about good breast health. A minimum of 85 cents of every dollar donated goes to research and awareness programs. Christy's Snip Basket + Thread Pallet case - Part 1 - Saturday, October 25, 2-4 p.m. These fabulous pieces are a part of a wonderful set from Olde Colonial Designs pictured below. Christy will "walk you through" the steps needed to finish these very charming and useful needlework accessories. Fee: $35. (Fee includes finishing materials but does not include the stitching kits, which come complete from the designer. The Snip Basket and Thread Pallet kits can be purchased for $59.50 for this class only.) Christy's Snip Basket + Thread Pallette case - Part 2 - Saturday, November 8, 2-4 p.m. Linda's Mattress-Style Ornament Finishing - Saturday, November 1, 1:30-4:30 p.m. Bring your stitched piece, backing fabrics and ribbon to match. Other finishing materials will be provided. Fee: $30 Again, anyone donating the ornament they finish in class will not be charged the class fee. Linda's Ribbon Ruching - Saturday, November 8, 10:30-11:30 a.m. You can learn this easy finishing technique without

5 having a finished piece. It's a wonderful finish for ornaments and sewing cases. Fee: $15. (Fee does not include your ribbon.) Other Classes Sampler Sunday, October 26, 1-4 p.m. I will be out of town this weekend, so instead of our usual third Sunday of the month, we will be gathering on the fourth Sunday of October. Fee: $10. Please call to register. Linda's Beginning Linen, November 1, 10:30-12:30. Here's the beautiful geranium bookmark, the class project for this class with Linda, with the classic book "Linen Stitches" as the class text. You will learn basic techniques and a wonderful edge finishing stitch, the nun's stitch, as well as stitching with overdyed threads. This class is so much more than learning to stitch on linen ~ many invaluable tips! What's New In The Shop It's here! The most popular threadpack series EVER from Crescent Colours/Little House Needleworks called "From Sea to Shining Sea." The first two threadpacks are available now, each $16, each with beautiful Belle Soie, ~ these are for the border and for the first house, the West Coast house on the left. The model was stitched on 32c natural, but we're doing our model on 40c Vintage Pear from Lakeside Linens. We have the frame for 40/36-count on order, as well as the frame for the 32/36-count design. AND speaking about Belle Soie, for all of us devotees of this wonderful silk that gives us such sheer joy to our hours of stitching, I have it on good authority that there will be 13 NEW COLORS (that's right, a baker's dozen) released in Nashville. I think Sharon had way too much fun in the dye pot recently, and we are the beneficiaries! So now I can't wait till Nashville! It's not a good thing to wish that time would pass quickly ~ it already does that! But it's a wonderful thing to look forward to... Two more new threadpacks from Crescent Colours (we're very fortunate to see the framed models because our Sandy does the

6 framing!): a very special threadpack that is being released especially for October/Breast Health Awareness Month., "I Support the Girls," with a portion of the proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (see above for information about the wonderful work of this organization). The threadpack includes 4 yards of silk (the pink is a new color developed especially for this threadpack) and 2 JABCO buttons ~ $15.00 and the second one in the Country Cottage's threadpack series, "Garden Party," the Dragonfly threadpack ($14) just arrived Tracy of Ink Circles again displays her wonderful sense of humor and her playtime with words in her latest designs: "Croackworth" ($8) features two cute frogs hidden among one of the central Quaker motifs ~ and the "Much-Heralded Sampler" ($16), a unique sampler that brings together a collection of motifs found in various heraldic crests, with a row of fanciful castle silhouettes at the bottom.

7 "Santa Scissors Keeper and Pins Holder" is one of the cutest needlework accessories I've seen in a long time. This chart ($21) comes to us from France's Dessins, and I must admit to you that I didn't order nearly enough of these. Please have patience while we get more from across the ocean. The only photo at the online show didn't give a clue as to the wonderful three-dimensional Santa sack on his back that serves as a pincushion for the adorable "winter" pinset, which also comes from France. We have the Halloween set and the Thistle set on the way, but didn't reorder this one because we couldn't "see" it in the online photos. We'll try to get more ~ we had them last year but they're out of stock now.

8 Two additional needlework "smalls" from Dessins: what they call "Grand Biscornu" ($17) ~ and "Chemin de roses" or "Way of Roses" ($17). Again the inside photo wasn't included in the online show photos, and it's so much more enticing when we can look inside. Two more new from Dessins, "Battledore." ($17, chart only). Like a hornbook, the battledore was an early kind of reading book for young children. This one shows on its cover the child playing after having correctly read the inside alphabets and texts. We ordered the chart and text in English, although pictured in French. And a very classic sampler, "Beaumont's Sampler" ($17), with several elegant and beautiful alphabets.

9 Two new Quaker designs from Germany's Monasterium Designs: "Sampler 4 Seasons" ($22) and "Willie's Quaker Square 6" ($10). An exquisitely elegant design from AAN (Alessandra Adelaide Needleworks) most aptly called "Two Birds" ($19) ~ and from Stickideen von der Wiehenburg, "Spot Sampler Carina" ($24),, a companion sampler to earlier designs, the "Cosima" and "Clarissa." Its stitch count is 401 x 401.

10 "Quaker Welcome Band" from Stickideen von der Wiehenburg is shown in three different colorways and options: one with solid Quaker motifs down the center, another with "Welcome" spelled out, and lastly, with initials and the year in the three center motifs. Very clever! The design measures 111 x 600. Also from Stickideen von der Wiehenburg are two Vierlanden samplers, "Anna" in red and "Lisa" in blue, each $10.50, each 146 x 146 stitches.

11 From Sajou, a small vintage-style wooden pin cushion in the cherrywood stain to coordinate with Sajou's other wooden pieces (please refer to the and newsletters posted on our Web site, thanks to Christy. to see the other pieces in this beautiful set). The top is covered in blue linen; the body is in the form of a small barrel with a base diameter of 1 1/8 inches, a height of 1 3/4 inches. The Sajou logo appears on two sides. $20. Historic Stitches' new "Witch's Hat Scissors Case" ($14) is stitched on black Belfast linen and is pictured with an Uncommon witch scissors ($24) that comes in either silver or black. From Praiseworthy Stitches, several new ones: "The Simple Gifts: Love" ($14) is the first of a series of four Quaker-inspired designs. ~ and "Midnight Fright" ($10)...

12 ... and "Frosty Friends" ($10) and "Quaker Small" ($5). Out of time and space again this morning,. I did say I would scan this, so here's The Good Huswife's "New England St. Nick" with a better representation of its colors on the Swamp linen ~ and Susan's "Tobasco" from Long Dog Samplers on black Belfast with Belle Soie. Isn't it fabulous?! And two framed pieces from Sandy's studio that are on their way to the home of some of New Jersey's best embroiderers, "Sleepy Hollow" ($10) from The Cricket Collection and "December" ($8) from Prairie Schooler.
