2 President s Message Thoughts from President Scott Stephens Why Rotary? When I am out in the Greenville community, I proudly proclaim that I am a Rotarian. I do this by wearing my Rotary pin and by talking about Rotary to people I meet. I am constantly inviting people to come and hear one of our great speakers and meet the members of our Rotary Club. Inevitably, I get the question..why are you a member of Rotary? I love it when people ask me why I m involved with Rotary, because I can explain what a difference Rotary makes in the world. Besides almost eliminating polio and providing water to impoverished families in remote areas of the world, Rotary members are helping people to learn to read, and they are providing business training to single mothers. Rotarians are mentoring to returning veterans, they are providing love and care to children who need hope, and they are providing much-needed financial resources to worthy kids who need help with college tuition. When I say they, I actually mean we. We Rotarians in the Rotary Club of Greenville are providing all that, and much more. What s not to be proud of? Scott Stephens, President With Sympathy Kathryn Helt s father, Clarence Chris Leverenz, passed away unexpectedly Thursday afternoon in Donna, Texas, during surgery to place a pacemaker. He was 87, and also leaves behind Kathryn s mom and brother. Please remember Kathryn and the rest of the family in your thoughts and prayers. Former Club President Judith Prince s mother, died on Wednesday, January 24 and was buried on Friday, January 26. She was 91, and she lived a long life. She had been sick for a number of years.

5 Programs Career Day: Showing the Path Career Day has become a signature event for our club. It pairs a high school student with a Rotary volunteer mentor in the career field of the student's choice for a half-day shadowing experience. The students are juniors and seniors selected by their counselors from participating Greenville county high schools. The event provides the students a unique opportunity to learn about a career interest in a hands-on manner and provides Rotarians an opportunity to fulfill their commitment to vocational service, one of the four primary areas of service in Rotary, in a meaningful way. The Career Day Service Award is also given on this day to either a Rotarian or a community member who has demonstrated high ethical standards in business and professional affairs and positively influences the future of youth in our community. If you are willing to share information with students interested in your chosen profession, please volunteer to spend time with them during Career Day. The following professions are represented: Arts (Performing, Visual, Photography, Creative Writing) Attorney (Civil, Criminal, Corporate, Estate) Banking, Financial and Investing Services (Banking, Investment Advisors, Insurance Building Construction (Consulting Engineering, Architecture, Contracting) Building Trades (Electricians, Plumbers, Welders, Carpenters, etc.) Business, Finance & Accounting (Corporate, Private, Public Accounting) Corporate Administration (Clerical, Bookkeeping, Data Entry, Communication, CS, HR Entrepreneurship (Starting or owning a business) Education (Teaching, Administration) Engineering (Electrical/Electronics/Computers, Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, Health Care Providers (Physicians, Nurses, Technicians) Health Care Administration (Hospital administration, Practice Management, Patient Hotel/Restaurant (Managers, Supervisors, Front of house, Back of house) Manufacturing (Tool & Die, CNC Programming, Plant Maintenance, Plant Operations) Marketing/PR (Advertising, Marketing, Graphic Design, Tech/Ad Writing) Military Service Non-Profit (Fund Raising, Administration) Parks, Zoos, Veterinary Public Safety (Police, Fire, EMS, etc.) Sales (Inside, Outside, Technical) Technology (IT, Materials, Product Design & Development) For additional information, contact Joan Burket or Jeff Bullock: Joan Burket: joan.burket@scansource.com Jeff Bullock: jbullock@greenvillesc.gov
