1 TENNESSEE CONSORTIUM FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES SYLLABUS OUTLINE COURSE TITLE - DRAWING II COURSE NUMBER - ART 2020 Professor - Susan Roberts Credit Hours: 3 Credit Hours Catalog Course Description: This course will continue the fundamental concepts of drawing including line, tone, space, form, and composition utilizing a variety of media. Emphasis will be placed on composition techniques and content. How Program Site Will Be Incorporated into the Course: Week one of this course will focus on drawing techniques, wet and dry media processes, composition, color and space as tools to develop content. We will utilize portions of Siena s Gothic and early Renaissance architecture and the Tuscan landscape as subject matter. The students will utilize the opportunity to sketch people, markets and architecture in the city and to work with the illusion of depth in the landscape. The second week adds a study of drawings by Renaissance masters and contemporary art techniques. Class plans will include field trips to the countryside surrounding Siena to draw and to Florence to view and draw Michelangelo s statue of David. Students will also take field trips to Sorrento and Pompeii to discover and draw Roman ruins. The third week of this course will take place in culturally and historically rich Rome. Students will execute a series of drawing exercises during the final week of the class that will prepare them for higher levels of problem solving, increase their self-discipline, and develop personal content in their work. Students will visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome, and visit and work from classical Roman statuary and Michelangelo s frescos in the Sistine Chapel. Prerequisites: None Textbook(s) and Other Course Materials: Recommended Book - Drawing: A Contemporary Approach by Teel Sale and Claudia Betti. Students will actively maintain a drawing/ watercolor sketchbook and create a separate series of related drawings. Drawing II - Required Materials:

2 *NOTE: You will need to purchase these supplies for the beginning of class. Other materials (not listed) may be needed later in the course. o Sketchbook, (8.5 x 11 minimum), good quality. o Watercolor paper pad or watercolor block (12-15 sheets, 140 lb., about 9 x 12 ) o Water color set or tubes (Windsor Newton or other good quality) - colors to include - yellow(s), red, blue(s), burnt umber, ochre, viridian, orange, Payne s gray. o Medium, round, springy, water color brush, (#8 or #10) o Small palette and small plastic water bottle with lid. o Compressed charcoal, 2-3 pieces o Ebony pencil, 2 3 o Drawing pencils (i.e., HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B) o Small pencil sharpener o Erasers, (Kneaded, Art Gum, Magic Rub (white plastic), and Clic Pencil type eraser). o 1 Drafting tape or masking tape. o Sturdy art supply bag to carry supplies on-site. o Chamois Cloth or bit of soft cloth o Black and Blue Ballpoint Pen (Uniball water resistant micro pen is good) o Fine Point Sharpie Marker (optional) $$ Money to purchase these supplies in Italy: Spray fixative, matte, one can (Approximately $10.00) Large drawing paper (Approximately $15.00) Shipping tube to ship large drawings home ($30.00?? to ship) I. Week/Unit/Topic Basis: modify for number of weeks Week Topic 1 Introduction to course, including, syllabus, course outline and schedule. Understanding student expectations, the use of materials and the etiquette of drawing on site in Italy. While continuing to refine drawing techniques, week one will also include wet and dry media processes, composition, color and space as tools to develop content. Subject matter may include architectural details, people, markets and the landscape and may be approached in a variety of ways. 2 Week two will include a study of the drawing styles of the great masters of the Renaissance (Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael etc.) as well as current trends in contemporary drawing. Students will travel to Florence, Sorrento and Pompeii, draw from architecture, sculpture and classical ruins and work in their sketchbook to develop ideas and color studies. The sketchbook will be used as a reference source for a series of related drawings. 3 During the final week of the class we will be based in Rome. Students will execute a series of drawings that will introduce them to higher levels of problem solving, increase their self-discipline, and explore personal content. Students will have an opportunity to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome, view and work from classical Roman statuary

3 and, if possible, work from Michelangelo s frescos in the Sistine Chapel. II. Course Objectives*: A. The student will be able to use the formal language of drawing and employ the fundamentals of artistic expression in their work B. The student will be able to use wet and dry media processes, composition, color and space as tools to develop content in an artwork. C. The student will develop an understanding of the principles of composition, proportion & texture when creating a drawing. D. The student will be able to develop ideas and color studies in a sketchbook and to use these sketches as reference material to begin a series of related drawings. E. The student will execute a series of drawings that will introduce them to problem solving, increase self-discipline, and explore personal content. F. The student will be able to demonstrate the ability to verbally articulate ideas and processes used in drawing. G. The student will be able to demonstrate verbally and visually knowledge about various drawing styles in art history and cultures. *Roman numerals after course objectives reference TBR s general education goals. III. Instructional Processes*: Students will: 1. Use wet and dry drawing media to execute drawings based on observation and personal expression of ideas. 2. Develop their ability to understand composition, color, value and space. 3. Execute a series of related drawings that will expose them to higher levels of problem solving, increase their self-discipline, and develop personal content. 4. Develop an understanding of the articulation of materials in their drawings. *Strategies and outcomes listed after instructional processes reference TBR s goals for strengthening general education knowledge and skills, connecting coursework to experiences beyond the classroom, and encouraging students to take active and responsible roles in the educational process. IV. Expectations for Student Performance*: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

Demonstrate the use of foreshortening and planar analysis as it pertains to the human figure. B, C 6. Demonstrate the ability to verbally articulate ideas and processes used in drawing. A, D, E 7. Demonstrate verbally and visually knowledge about various drawing styles in art history and cultures. G *Letters after performance expectations reference the course objectives listed above. V. Evaluation: A. Testing Procedures: Instruction and Evaluation: Assessment of personal growth and experimentation 35% (See Grade Determination section below) Commitment to sketchbook, checked each week 25% (The sketchbook should act as a visual journal of all ideas related to this course, the student should consistently work in and think through his/her sketchbook, grades will be determined by the student s consistent dedication to pushing and documenting their thought process.) Completion and competency of assigned problems 25% (All problems should be complete and on-time as well as presented in a professional manner; the student will be graded on quality and timeliness of the project.) Participation in group critiques and discussions 15% (The student is expected to always be on time and prepared for the critiques, which take the place of examinations in studio courses.) 100%

Other Evaluation Methods: Grade Determination: The following list can serve as a guideline for assessing your development: 1) Development of skills in seeing and thinking; sensitivity toward expressive solutions to course problems. 2) Development of skills in technical application of media. 3) The on-time completion of course problems. 4) Participation in group critiques and presentation of work. 5) Full and on-time class attendance. 6) Commitment; measuring how far you will go to solve an assigned problem. 7) Attention to solving problems in a creative, unique and expressive manner. 8) Presentation of work. Presentation skills include verbal and written articulation of ideas as well as neatness and clarity of visuals. 9) Thoroughness of preparation for class is marked by following instructions, consistent work habits, meeting deadlines, presentation of completed work, and by general performance, involvement and effort. D. Grading Scale: = A = B = B = C = C = D Below 65 F VI. Policies: A. Attendance Policy Attendance is of utmost importance in study abroad courses. There are no unexcused absences permitted. Multiple unexcused absences are grounds for removal from the program. Being in class on time is also very important. Frequent tardiness will be considered an absence and appropriate action will be taken. Absences due to illness must be reported immediately to the program director. B. Academic Dishonesty: Academic misconduct committed either directly or indirectly by an individual or group is subject to disciplinary action. Prohibited activities include but are not limited to the following practices: Cheating, including but not limited to unauthorized assistance from

6 material, people, or devices when taking a test, quiz, or examination; writing papers or reports; solving problems; or completing academic assignments. In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions that may be imposed as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign either (1) an F or zero for the assignment or (2) an F for the course. Instructional Hours: This course will consist of a minimum of 37.5 full hours of formal instruction.
