1 Milling Around Memories Christmas at the Historical Park A Christmas in Richfield Event December 2, 2017 Noon to 3pm

2 Milling Around Memories The mission of the Richfield Historical Society is to discover, collect, preserve and promote the history of the Village of Richfield. The 29-acre Richfield Historical Park, owned by the Village of Richfield and managed by the Richfield Historical Society, has seen vast development in restoration, refurbishing and expansion of the buildings on the site. The site was placed on the State Register of Historic Places in 2006 and on the National Register of Historic Places in The Society and the Village are working together to explore options for restoring the eroding foundation of the Messer/ Mayer Mill, the site s signature building. The cost is steep and your support for the Society s fund-raising efforts is greatly appreciated. Social and fund-raising activities as well as several educational programs for all ages sponsored by the Society provide opportunities for the community to enjoy local events and become more aware of the history of the Richfield community. Visit the Society s outstanding website: to see what else is happening. With the continued corroboration of the Village Board and the community, the Society continues to be a vital, energetic and growing organization in the Village. 2 Remembering the past

Troop 2280 from Friess Lake School took on a project to earn their Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. When you take a stroll across the new bridge, you ll be amazed at the detail and quality of this project. More on page 39. Nick Densing, working on an Eagle Scout project led a team to preserve and refinish the many picnic tables in the park. Additionally, he worked on the bleachers and portable wooden steps to insure that they too will last to serve visitors for years to come. Nick s project is covered on page 39 of this booklet. Don t miss seeing the new Blacksmith shop located near the log buildings on the southern end of the Historical Park. It s more than just another building; it exhibits the critical role of the village blacksmith who supplied needed hardware, implements and tools before hardware and big box stores. See page 21. And at long last you can see the final phase of the mill foundation reconstruction project. Because of the support by so many we will soon turn to the historic power equipment and the original milling and sifting machinery inside and closer to the day when we Get it Grinding. See pages

12 Christmas Toys for Good Little Girls and Boys The magic of Christmas in childhood was focused on Christmas gifts, the best always were the toys that Santa brought. In anticipation, we kids spent the weeks prior to Christmas with the Montgomery Ward and Sears Catalogs carefully circling and initialing the objects of our desires. It didn t even require a letter to Santa to find several of our wishes granted on Christmas morning. My brother always wanted a pony, but didn t get it. After several annual wishes I did get the Red Rider BB gun of my dreams. Mom always had something for each of us that she made late in the evenings after we were in bed. I recall my sister receiving a blue nurse s cape with red lining and a white nurse s cap. Memories of those fabulous presents remain; some as clear as the day those gifts were placed under our tree. I remember the effort required to show appreciation for the socks, underwear and pajamas that had to be 12 Remembering the past

13 opened before the really good stuff, which was sure to come. Today, those same toys are labeled vintage or collectible and even antique. Photos of those same toys bring warm memories of packages opened by youthful siblings. I no longer recall which toy belonged to which kid, but the toys themselves remain as indelible images and part of our family clutter. The sought object changed throughout the decades in the 40s, 50s, 60s etc. Although toys are no longer made the 13

14 way they were, the joy remains as it did in our younger days. The thrill of receiving just what I wanted remains; with or without batteries required. For my first Christmas, at age six months, I received an electric train. I ve always had the feeling that I came along just in time for my dad and grandfather to get what they always wanted. What was your most hoped for Christmas toy? Is it pictured here or perhaps in an earlier or later version? Mother always maintained that Christmas without a new book isn t really Christmas at all. So, in addition to books, Christmas also brought teddy bears, stuffed animals, tops, baby dolls, Storybook dolls, Barbie dolls, dump trucks, farm trucks, firetrucks, tractors, toy soldiers, sleds, tricycles and coaster wagons. Of course we also found games among the packages, Monopoly, Parcheesi, Sorry and Cootie. Take a look in the attic or on the internet and you ll likely find your own Christmas memories. Somehow, they, like us, have become historical. 14 Remembering the past

20 More than 14,000 hours That s the amount of time volunteers have given to the Richfield Historical Society in just Those numbers are incredible but want to hear a really amazing number? $323,000! That s the value of those 14,000 hours. The organization, Independent Sector, currently puts the value of a volunteer to a Wisconsin nonprofit organization at $23.06 an hour.* RHS quite literally could not do much of our work of discovering, collecting, preserving and promoting the history of the Village of Richfield without the work of these dedicated and tireless volunteers. We want to recognize and thank our volunteers for the huge difference they make not just on our organization, but on our community as well. There s our Board of Directors who put countless hours each month into making sure everything we do at RHS is effective, innovative, and properly supported. Do you know that RHS has long range plans that extend beyond the time most of the current members will be here to carry them out? The Thursday Crew members perform miracles; of construction, of buildings and grounds maintenance. Additionally, they do the setup and take down of innumerable items for every RHS event. It takes another team to do the marketing and promotion; creating and distributing signs and posters throughout the community, creating and contacting media with press releases. It takes time to communicate with village officials, suppliers of everything from gravel, paint, and concrete to food and beverages and of course with our many member/friend bakers and cooks. Numerous hands are part of the creation of the member newsletter, filled with carefully researched articles and updated organizational information. In February and March a team keeps vigil and carries endless bags of sap to the Sugar Shack to create the RHS Maple Syrup loved by so many. There are also those less glamourous activities like cleaning and polishing as well as mowing, planting and weeding. Time is required to prepare materials and schedules for the teachers and students to maximize the value of Education Day(s). Volunteers work to enrich historic activities designed for the kids from area elementary schools. Finally, and ongoing there is much communication between and among fellow volunteers; lots of them. The Thresheree alone, requires over 200 volunteers to make it the experience appreciated by so many. Want to join these incredible people in giving back? We ve got opportunities for folks of every interest and schedule availability. Give Sharon Lofy, our Volunteer Coordinator, a call at (262) or an at hsl1725@yahoo.com with any questions! Or just grab any member or volunteer, and we ll do our best to be helpful. You ll make friends for the rest of your life. Oh yes, you ll also get to experience that good kind of tired. *Latest figure from 2016 Bureau of Labor Statistics data, indexed by Independent Sector in April Remembering the past

21 The Blacksmith Shop Kathy Lauenstein and Herb Lofy are the source of this story. As they recall, it began in 2004 with an early spring chat they had at the Historical Park. Kathy and her husband, Mike, stopped at the park and had a chance meeting with Herb. Mike and Kathy were involved with the Upper Midwest Blacksmith Association (UMBA) and were looking for a place in southern Wisconsin to showcase their skills. Conversations continued at RHS sites committee meetings with UMBA members. Ultimately, no immediate plans developed. Gradually, the UMBA organization moved on and the project became the singular effort of the RHS. Early 2014 conversations with Kathy and Tom Jordens, from the Thursday Crew, brought the project to the sites committee to consider creating a blacksmith shop. Del Schmechel stepped forward to coordinate the project. He was able to connect with Tim Einwalter for assistance with design plans. Kathy s experience in smithing was invaluable to the design. By early 2015 ideas and plans merged so that the clearing of the site could begin. In May, Ryan Storck, from Karrells Excavating, prepared the site. In August, the construction began with the setting of the poles. The large lateral beams, girt members, all the rafters and some of the siding came from the Joe Kohl farm east of Richfield. The owner, Bryan Kazmierczak, donated the barn and Charlie Mayhew, from Re- Barn, with his knowledge and equipment, helped the Thursday Crew dismantle it. Boards were made from pine trees cut on the Theisen family farm on Shadow Lane. Doors are made from lumber donated by Francis Peters from West Bend. The project was made much easier with the equipment, tools and expertise of Bob Steinke (Thursday crew member from Eagle). Isn t it amazing how a bunch of people known as the Thursday Crew accepted the challenge and created a real historic treasure from the ideas and dreams emanating from conversations of many different people over thirteen years? We have all these and many others, unnamed, to thank. 21

30 RHS Monthly Programs Public welcome You don t have to be a member to attend Free and snacks are served Monthly programs are a long standing tradition and effective draw for the Richfield Historical Society. Each program stands on its own with a lively presentation selected from an amazingly wide range of topics. Presentations from time to time involve in depth views of figures from the past presented by re-enactors with years of research and acting skills. In recent years we ve been treated to visits by Abe Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Mary Todd Lincoln, Abigail Adams and Goode Rebeka, a Salem witch. Other programs feature Wisconsin authors including Jerry Apps, a longtime favorite. Events and places of regional interest have been featured, including Great Lakes Light Houses, the gardens at Old World Wisconsin, the farm at Ten Chimneys, memories of the Harley Davidson families by Jean Davidson, Civil War Letters from the front written to a Wisconsin family at home, the 1947 Snowstorm and an evening of music from the time of the Civil War. It is a long list with the above just a sampling. Many members and regular volunteers were first attracted to RHS by one of these intriguing presentations. If you were there, you have fond memories of many of these programs. If you were not, you have a glimpse at what you ve missed. These attractive programs are presented each month except for June, July, August and December, usually on the 4th Thursday evening at 7:00, except for November when it is moved to avoid a conflict with Thanksgiving. Please check the RHS web site for updated topics, dates and locations and join us for a memorable evening. 30 Remembering the past

37 EDUCATION DAYS AT THE RICHFIELD HISTORICAL PARK Third graders on their annual field trip ruled the day at the park. Actually, it required two days of approximately 70 kids each plus teachers and chaperones, half on May 18 and half on May 24 from area elementary schools, public and parochial. Twentythree RHS volunteers staffed ten activity areas at which the kids learned a little better what it would have been like to be a Richfield area kid in the 19th and early 20th centuries. At the end of the day the question to be resolved was whether it was the lack of electronics, television, indoor plumbing, central heating, refrigeration and food from the supermarket or all of the extra work expected of kids because of the lack of these conveniences that would have made living in the olden days so difficult. If there had been more time perhaps the joys of simpler times could have been more effectively shared. But that understanding will come in time as the third grade students continue to learn more about their world and that of their ancestors. We hope that they will be better able to understand the world in which they live by having a better understanding of where we all came from. 37

38 SCOUT PROJECTS Through the years, the Richfield Historical Society has partnered with local Boy and Girl Scout troops to provide service projects for the scouts to earn the rank of Eagle Scout or the Silver Award. 39 Most Recent Scout Projects Girl Scout Footbridge Project Girl Scout Troop 2280 from Friess Lake School took on a project for its members to earn their Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. The Richfield Historical Park needed a footbridge across the mill s raceway for better access to the Lillicrapp Welcome Center. The members of Troop 2280 outlined a detailed project plan including raising the funds required to complete the work as designed. When you take a stroll across the new bridge, you ll be amazed at the detail and quality of this project of our determined Girl Scouts. Eagle Scout Project Just completed In addition to creating new things much of life at the Richfield Historical Park has to do with maintaining all that makes this space a park. Twenty or so picnic tables make up part of the critical park infrastructure. Nick Densing and his team took on the task of refinishing the tables we enjoy when picnicking at the park. During major events many of the tables are found at the food concession area. In addition to the tables, Nick refinished the bleachers and portable steps that appear at Thresheree and other busy times. You d never realize how much lumber requires attention until a maintenance project such as this comes calling. 39

46 2018 Events Presented by the Richfield Historical Society Antiques, Appraisal & Chili Lunch Sunday February 18, a.m. 4 p.m. At Friess Lake School Hwy. 164 & Holy Hill Rd. (Hwy. 167) Are we messing with a successful event? Hope not. You will notice that the larger space at Friess Lake School will enhance the Antiques, Appraisal and Chili Lunch event. It will be less crowded and will provide space for increased participation. Look around your attic, garage and basement, chat with your friends and neighbors and bring more stuff and more friends to the annual winter/spring event everyone is talking about. We ve found more space for you to fill with treasures from your space. From the experienced appraisers, each with specialized expertise, you ll learn what price you should try to get when you finally decide to find a new home for some of your stuff. At least you may add to the story about that collectible/ antique from Grandma, Grandpa or your family s crazy aunt. The word is out about the chili lunch. Some people attend just for the food. Whether you like yours mild or hot, we ll have the fixings to customize it to your exact chili specifications. Even after eating your cornmeal muffin, you need to save room for dessert. The RHS bakers always aim to please. Rumor has it that they ve discovered the way to create cakes and pies with NO calories. Brave the weather; bring friends and family for a warm neighborly experience in February. You ll not regret it. 46 Remembering the past

47 2018 Events Presented by the Richfield Historical Society Maple Syrup Family Day Sunday March 25, a.m. 4 p.m. Richfield Nature/Historical Park Entrance at 1896 Hwy. 164 ½ mile north of Holy Hill Rd. (Hwy. 167) Free Admission It probably doesn t matter whether it was last year that it was cold for Maple Syrup Family Day and the year before exceptionally warm or the reverse. Wisconsin winters and springs are unpredictable and highly variable, as are these days for making maple syrup. The flow of the sap depends upon warm days and cool nights and just when that pattern will occur cannot be a precise prediction. This event has grown larger each year, attracting more families to learn about turning sap from our maple trees into the world s best Maple Syrup, tasting it and bringing some home for a special topping for pancakes, waffles and whatever wants a little natural sweetness. Demonstrations: 11:15, 12:15, 1:15 Story Time (Log Cabin): 11:45, 12:45, 1:45 Tours of Mill & Mill House: $5 per person; Children 5 & Under, Free Be sure to visit the Lillicrapp Welcome Center s exhibits of an early twentieth century general store and another featuring photography of the same time. Stop by to see and learn of life in a log cabin and see a real Richfield log barn. The buildings are open from 12 to 4pm with the last Mill & Mill House tours at 3pm. Enjoy a wagon ride to the historic buildings. Of course food will be available: Hot Dogs, Chili Dogs, Homemade Goodies, Beverages & Maple Syrup. REAL Maple Cotton Candy will again be featured. 47

48 2018 Events Presented by the Richfield Historical Society Step Back In Time On the 2nd Sunday of each Month May through August May 13 June 10 July 8 August 12 Come enjoy the park on these Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Messer/Meyer Mill, the Mill House and the Lillicrapp Welcome Center will be open for tours. (Entrance $5 kids 5 & under free) Come and enjoy the park when it is less crowded and you have time to really get an up close and personal look around. After several years of receiving requests to have the buildings open on days other than our traditional RHS events, we tried these open days last year. The response was positive so we will do it again in There will be activities for kids making this a family event. For this smaller event please enter the Richfield Historical Park off of Pleasant Hill Road. The address is 4399 Pleasant Hill Road, about a ¼ mile east of Highway 164. Due to the planned Hwy 164 construction in 2018 use Hillside Road to go north one mile from Holy Hill Road (Hwy. 167) and then turn left (west) onto Pleasant Hill for approximately ¾ mile. You will avoid the construction and have an even better afternoon. 10th Annual Richfield Art at the Mill Saturday July 28, a.m. 4 p.m. Entrance at 189 Hwy 164 ½ mile north of Holy Hill Road (Hwy. 167) Join us for an art and fine craft fair held in a beautiful, natural wooded setting with a bubbling stream. We are pleased to host this annual event which nicely matches 21st century art and craft items with our 19th century buildings in their original setting. In the past several years seventy or more talented arts and venders displayed and sold their works of art. In addition to the art objects the historic mill, mill house and Lillicrapp Welcome center will be open for guided tours. For additional information please see our web site: 48 Remembering the past

49 2018 Thresheree - The 20th Annual Saturday & Sunday September 15 & 16 9 a.m. 5 p.m. Entrance at 1896 Hwy. 164 ½ mile north of Holy Hill Rd. Conversations are already underway about the special features and activities of this historic celebration. One thing is certain, that if you liked any of the first 19 Thresherees, you ll love this, the special 20th. Please share your ideas how to make this event the best ever. Your participation will be needed whether as a volunteer or an attendee. Be sure to reserve the dates RIGHT NOW. Don t let something prevent you from being part of this the 20th Annual Thresheree by not having that weekend reserved. As always it will be the 3rd weekend of September; Saturday and Sunday, September 15 &

50 Messer/Mayer Mill Update It was only twenty years ago that the Messer/ Mayer Mill looked like this photo. The area surrounding it was overgrown; the house almost invisible from the mill. When some local town leaders realized that this historic place would likely soon meet-up with a bulldozer and the property become another subdivision, they took action. Another handful of Richfield residents banded together to form what became the Richfield Historical Society and took responsibility for the rehabilitation and development of what we now know as The Richfield Historical Park. After twenty years and untold numbers of volunteer hours, the newest addition, the blacksmith shop, is being completed and the third phase of the Mill Restoration project, rebuilding the foundation, is nearing completion. We, indeed, have much to celebrate even as we contemplate the awaiting projects. The mill needs repainting after fifteen or sixteen years. We hope to complete this maintenance task this year before the finish deteriorates more and it becomes an even larger project. Just like at home, there is always something to be done and money to be found to fund the project. It isn t cheap, but it sure is worthwhile. When the contractors complete the foundation reconstruction, RHS volunteers will take on the construction of the engine shed at the south end of the mill. As in the late 1890s and the 50 Remembering the past

51 early years of the twentieth century, an old hit and miss gas engine will be housed in there to power the mill when water is not available. Back then it took a couple years to find an engine that worked when coupled with the shafts that drive all the mechanisms within the mill. We hope our project may move more quickly, but that is tomorrow s story. Locating and refurbishing the turbine and attending to the array of other equipment used to move, grind and sift the grain will complete the process to Get It Grinding. We are fortunate to have all of the original equipment. We are yet to learn how difficult it will be to make it all work together. This major project with all of its component parts and phases will keep RHS and the friends and neighbors busy for the coming years.
