8 DARK HEART OF FLORENCE WALKING TOUR ( 2 h ) On this night walking tour we peel back the layers to uncover an older, darker side of the city, telling you the legends and mysteries that shed new light on some of the city s most important sites. Our tour reveals sordid tales of the true Florence of the Medieval Ages, when cutthroat business (sometimes literal) was the name of the game, and protecting your tower home from intruders meant keeping a cauldron of oil always on the boil. It was a time when streets deemed too dark were closed as a matter of public safety and traitors were burned, their bodies hung out in public as a warning to all. Hear about the series of events that led to the attempted assassination of the Medici heirs (in a church no less) and the love stories that set medieval Florentine tongues wagging. For two hours your expert, English-speaking guide will lead you around the city of Florence, uncovering the history hidden behind stone walls. You ll see Palazzo di Bianca Cappello, a palace built by the Grand Duke for his mistress, and discover the cause of their mysterious deaths, only recently brought to light through the use of modern technology. With Piazza Signoria and Ponte Vecchio on our route, you ll see some of the most famous sites of Florence although the stories you hear there and the details you notice will be a lot less well-known. It s not all treachery and treason though. We ll end our tour on a sweet note with a stop at one of Florence s best gelaterias, for a gelato of your choice. 12 THE MEDICI S SECRETS: Vasari Corridor & Pitti Royal Palace ( 2 h ) Discover the Palace that celebrated the Grandeur of the MEDICI family. The sumptuous Palatine Gallery & the magnificent Royal Apartments where the Grand Dukes of Tuscany (and later the King of Italy) lived. And learn all the secrets of the incredible Vasari Corridor, the Medici family's enclosed passageway that allowed them to move freely and safely from one side of the old town to the other. Pitti Palace was built in the second half of the 15th century probably based on a project drawn up by Filippo Brunelleschi for a member of the rich florentine Pitti family, but was unfinished at his death in The original building was then purchased in 1550 by Eleonora da Toledo, the wife of the Grand Duke Cosimo I de'medici, and made into the official Medici family residence. For this reason it was changed and much enlarged by one of Renaissance greatest architects: Giorgio Vasari. The grandeur of the palace reflects the power and influence of the Medici family, one of the dynasties that most contributed to art in all of the Western world's history: the artistic masterpieces, philosophical thinking and political achievements of Renaissance are mainly to be reconducted to the Medici. Their greed for power came second only to their wish to show it off, by surrounding themselves with the best artists of that period and their artworks. During the centuries, Pitti Palace was again widened and enriched with baroque halls and artwork and also became the main residence for the King of Italy (hence the name, the Royal Palace). Vasari also designed and built an enclosed, almost 1-km long, secret passageway that connected Pitti Palace with Palazzo Vecchio (the Town Hall), in order for the Medici family to be able to move freely and with no risks between their residence and the political power offices: the Vasari Corridor. With an in-depth explanation by a professional guide, uncover the Vasari Corridor story and secrets as you walk along its path from the outside, cutting through the old town and experiencing the same perspective as the Medici family's enemies, trying to follow and track the Grand Duke's movements inside the passageway. With this tour, entering Pitti Palace, you will then visit the sumptuous Palatine Gallery, with its magnificent baroque rooms housing the Medici's own private collection of more than 500 artworks (including the world largest collection of Raffaello's, and others by Tiziano, Botticelli, Caravaggio and many more). With your guide you will then discover the Royal Apartments: a suite of 14 rooms, formerly used by the Medici family, and lived in by their successors and then the Italian Royal family (Savoy). While a few of the rooms boast Empire style decorations (later implemented by the Savoy Royal family), there are still some rooms maintaining the original decorations and furniture dating back to the Medici's. A once-ina-lifetime experience that will let you enjoy a small-group exclusive wine tour in the most nature-oriented way: riding a bike through the gentle hills of Chianti wine region. This professionally guided wine tour and fully supported bike ride in the Tuscan countryside begins with a comfortable shuttle transportation out of the busy city center. In about 25 minutes you ll reach a Renaissance noble Villa- the starting point for your bike ride. Riding the bicycles, we will lead you along scenic countryroads hemmed in ancient olive groves and vineyards. Tuscan hilltops and hillside villa estates are all part of the breathtaking panoramic views you will see as you ride your bike through the heart of Tuscany. Several stops for photo opportunities will be made along the way. You will visit two wineries, completely different in their settings and approach: a famous winery with its Renaissance Villa and setting, producing some of the most renowned wines in the world, and a fascinating family-run organic farm and winery. Learn the techniques of production, ageing, storing and bottling wine and olive oil. Discover the different approaches these two wineries have in wine production: from the application of modern techniques to the rediscovery of ancient gestures through a fully organic production. Once back at the Renaissance Villa, you will enjoy a typical Tuscan lunch in its enoteca, set in the 1000-year-old cellar, tasting the incredible wines of the wineries you just visited (both wineries boast international recognition and rewards), and learning wine pairing. Having a van always following the group, you can decide yourself how you want to approach the biking part of this experience. If you feel fit enough, you can join it as an intermediate level bike ride, with some interesting uphill sections. If you want to join it in a more relaxed mode, you can still enjoy most of the biking itinerary (just the flat and downhill sections), relying on the van assistance for the couple of short uphill parts. 38 Let us introduce you to the quintessence of Tuscan wines: the world-renowned Supertuscans. You will be comfortably escorted in a minivan through the outskirts of Florence to three different wineries located amidst the rolling hills of the Chianti wine region. A sommelier will guide your experience as you taste and learn about the different methods of wine production in two famous wineries plus a family-run organic farm and winery. Some of the best wines ever produced have come from the hills just outside of Florence, thanks to the beautiful climate and the rich soil, allowing these wineries to become top leaders in the industry for hundreds of years. You will learn the difference between the Chianti wines, what distinguishes "Chianti Classico", and which wines pair best with your favorite foods. But, most of all, you will discover the world of Supertuscans: a Supertuscan is the utmost expression of quality and winemaking skills of a wine producer and his enologist. The wine can be made with any variety of grapes, either blended or pure. A Supertuscan is often the signature of the wine-producer. A precious wine that sometimes is difficult to find outside the latest vintage - or even to get a taste of. Each one of the three wineries is renowned for its Supertuscan production. You will see world famous Supertuscan vineyards and discover their production process behind the stage, in the most fascinating settings - from medieval castles to Renaissance noble villas, to a familyrun organic farm - and approaches: from the application of modern techniques to the rediscovery of ancient gestures through a fully organic production. Your sommelier will teach you how to distinguish between the acidity and the aromas, scents and flavors of the different grapes grown in the Tuscan region, as you taste various wines of these different wineries. A final stop at a noble Villa will let you enjoy a gourmet lunch in its enoteca, set in the 1000-year-old cellar. Specialties of the Tuscan cuisine and local products will be served with wine pairing.
