Basic Penguin pattern BODY Use the colour you want your penguin to be. Begin at lower edge and cast on 12 sts Row 1 Inc K wise in every stitch (24 sts) Now begin with a K row and work in stocking stitch throughout. Shape tail as follows: Inc in first two and last two sts on the next 3 rows (36sts) Complete tail shaping: Decrease 1 stitch at each end of next 6 rows ( 24 sts) St-st 12 rows Shape neck Next row: K4, ( K2tog) 8 times, K4 (16sts) Shape head Next row K4 (inc in next stitch) 8 times K4 (24sts) St-st 13 rows Shape top of head: Next row (K2tog ) to end ( 12 sts) Next row (K2 tog) to end ( 6 sts) Break off yarn leaving a long tail then thread it loosely through remaining stitches and leave.

2 To make up Gather along the cast on stitches of body, then pull up tightly and fasten off. Over sew row ends of tail, then body together, turn right side out and stuff. Pull length of yarn at top of head ( I left this open until I sewed the eyes in place). Chest Piece Begin at lower edge and using white cast on 4 stitches Row 1: Inc K wise into every stitch ( 8 sts) Row 2: Inc K wise in every stitch ( 16 sts) Beginning with a Purl row St-st 19 rows Next row: (K2tog) to end (8sts) Sew the chest piece to front of penguin having the bind off edge level with neck shaping row. Wings ( make 2) Begin at upper edge with body colour and cast on 6 sts Beginning with a Knit row St-st 14 rows Continue in St-st decreasing 1 st at each end of next 2 rows ( 2 sts) K 1 row Continue in St-st increasing 1 stitch at each end of next row (4 sts) Break off yarn and join on White for inside of wing St-st 14 rows. To make up Bring bind off and cast on edges together, over sew row ends of wing together. (I used mattress stitch it was easier and neater) Then sew cast on and bind off edges together. Sew these edges to sides of penguin level with neck shaping row.

3 Feet (make 2) Using Yellow cast on 3 sts Row 1: Inc K wise in every stitch ( 6 sts) Beginning with a Purl row St-st 3 rows Next row: ( K2 tog, take yarn once round tip of right hand needle) twice, K2 tog (5sts) Keeping St-st correct work 4 rows then. Over sew cast on and bind off edges together having right side of St-st outside. Sew these edges to front of penguin at lower edge of chest piece, having cast on edges against penguin and leaving a small space between the feet at centre front. I over sewed where the holes are to create toes for the feet I thought it looked nicer. Beak Using Orange yarn cast on 6 sts Knit 1 row Continue in St-st decreasing 1 st at each end of next row ( 4 sts) St-st 1 row, then decrease 1 st at each end of next row ( 2 sts) Break of yarn leaving a long end then thread it through remaining sts and fasten off Over sew row ends with right side of St-st outside. Push a little stuffing in the beak using tweezers. Tidy up any loose knitted sts by sewing them into the beak. Sew beak onto the middle penguins face. Eyes Place eyes either side of the beak using pins to get the position you want. Method 1:Take a length of Black yarn and make a knot in the middle by twisting the yarn three times and pull it together to create a knot. Know take one end of the yarn and thread it through the face of the penguin and up through the open head and do the same with the second thread tie it off and knot firmly. Method 2: Sew the eyes in place using black yarn over sew two or three times so the stitch stands out and take the thread up through the top of the head and tie off and knot. Now you can gather the top of the head I add a little more stuffing and sew in place.

4 Accessories Cap 1 Use colour yarn of your choice. Cast on 36 sts and beginning with a K row St-st 10 rows. Next row: ( K2tog) to end ( 18 sts) Next row: ( K2tog) to end (9sts) Break off yarn leaving a long end thread through the remaining sts and pull up tightly and fasten off. Over sew row ends together. You have two choices either use Purl side as the right side or the Knit side. Sew to Penguins head securely. Cap 2 This cap is striped, but you can do it in a single colour. Cast on 32 sts in colour A and Knit 1 row Join on colour B Beginning with a knit row St-st 14 rows alternating colours every 2 rows. Keeping stripes correct shape top of cap. Next row: (K2tog) to end (16sts) Next row: (K2tog) to end ( 8 sts) Break off yarn leaving a long end then thread through remaining sts pull up tightly and fasten off. Over sew row ends. Sew to penguins head and pull over the top to one side and sew in place.

5 Cap 3 Cast on 56 sts and garter stitch 3 rows Next row ( K2tog) to end ( 28 sts) Beginning with a Knit row, St-st 12 rows Next row (K2tog) to end ( 14 sts) Join row ends of hat noting the Purl side is the right side. Join across binf off stitches. Put hat on penguins head and catch it where it touches. Sew the bind off sts to penguins head to indent the top of the hat. Scarves Use the colour that you used for the caps. Cast on 54 sts knit 1 row then bind off. I sewed around the edges of the scarf to create a contrast with the yarn I used for the striped cap. Other ideas: Sew a flower to hat and scarf using Lazy Daisy stitch. Sew around edges of cap or scarf for added interest using a different colour yarn.
