1 Frankie s Knitted Stuff Cradle Bag This little cradle is just the right size for a 5" baby doll. The sides can be folded up over the baby and the drawstrings tightened to turn the cradle into a bag. I knitted my cradle bag with Stylecraft Special DK (295m / 100g) in blue and cream and 4mm / US size 6 needles. I used about 80g of the blue and a lot less of the cream. Tension 12sts and 24 rows = 5cm / 2"² in garter stitch. 11 sts and 22 rows = 5cm / 2"² in moss stitch. The base and sides of the cradle are knitted separately and then sewn together before the hood is added.

2 The Base Cast on 9 sts. Row 1: Kf&b, *P1, K1, repeat from * to end. Row 2: Kf&b, *P1, K1, repeat from * to last st, P1. Row 3: Kf&b, *K1, P1, repeat from * to end. Row 4: Kf&b, *K1, P1, repeat from * to ast st, K1. Work these four rows three times. You should now have 21 stitches on your needle. Now work 40 rows in moss stitch: Every row: K1, *P1, K1, repeat from * to end. Now shape the end of the base. Row 1: Row 2: Row 3: Row 4: *K1, P1, repeat from * to last 3 sts, K1, P2tog. *P1, K1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, P2tog. *P1, K1, repeat from * to last 3 sts, P1, K2tog. *K1, P1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, K2tog. Work these four rows three times until you are back to 9 stitches. Cast off. The Sides Cast on 80 sts. Knit 30 rows. Purl one row and then knit one row to mark the top of the side. *Kf&b, K1, repeat from * to end (120 sts). The top of the bag is mostly worked in double moss stitch:

3 Rows 1 & 2: Rows 3 & 4: *K2, P2, repeat from * to end. *P2, K2, repeat from * to end. Work 20 rows in double moss stitch. Now make the eyelets for the drawstrings that will close the bag. K2, *cast off 2, K4 (including the stitch already on the needle), repeat from * to last 4 sts, cast off 2, K2. K2, *cast on 3, K4, repeat from * to last 2, cast on 3, K2. K4, K2tog, *K5, K2tog, repeat from * to last st, K1. Knit. Work four rows in moss stitch: Row 1: Row 2: *K1, P1, repeat from * to end. *P1, K1, repeat from * to end. The frilled edge is achieved by using the picot point cast off: *cast on 2, cast off 4, transfer the stitch back to the left hand needle and repeat from *. The Hood First fold the side section in half and mark the middle with a pin. Put the pin where the garter stitch section meets the double moss stitch. This will be the centre of the hood. Count 15 stitches from the pin and, working into the middle of the three rows between the side and the top section of the cradle, pick up and knit 30 stitches for the hood.

4 Knit 1 row. The hood is shaped with short rows. I used a simple wrap and turn: slip 1 stitch purlwise, turn, put the yarn at the back of the work and slip the stitch purlwise again. Row 1: Row 2: Row 3: Row 4: K29, w&t. K28, w&t. K27, w&t. K26, w&t. and so on. Continue like this until you have worked K8, w&t and then start working back up K9, w&t. K10, w&t. K11, w&t. K12 w&t. When you have finally knitted a row with all 30 sts again, cast off and sew in the ends to neaten the sides of the hood. Now join the ends of the side section together. Then pin and sew the base to the main part, making sure that the short end lines up with the hood. Edging the Hood Using cream yarn and 3.25mm double pointed needles, work attached I cord all round the top of the cradle and the edge of the hood. Cast on 3 stitches and work every row as follows:

5 K2, slip 1 stitch knitwise, yarn forward, pick up and knit 1 stitch from the edge and pass the two slipped stitches over. That extra yarn forward stitch will stop the main colour showing through on the cream cord. Work into only one strand of the stitches round the top of the cradle or the cream will show through on the other side of the bag. The Drawstrings Using 3.25mm double pointed needles and cream yarn work two lengths of I cord, each about 50cm / 20" long. It is easiest to measure the first one and then make the second to match that. Working from the outside of the bag (with the sides folded up), thread the cords all round the bag, beginning and ending on opposite sides. Sew the two ends of each cord together and then sew a chunky button over the join to give something to hold on to when closing the bag. The Bedding Again, this is knitted with double knitting weight yarn on 4mm needles. It is worked all in one to make a sort of sleeping bag. I used cream for the sheet and pillow and a mixture of blue and cream for the blanket.

6 Cast on 20 sts and knit 60 rows (about 14 cm) for the sheet. Knit one row and then purl one row to mark the fold. K2, *m1, K4, repeat from * to last 2 sts, m1, K2 (25 sts). This increasing will give a little bit more room to fit the doll in. Now work in stocking stitch for the blanket until it is half as long as the sheet. You can use any pattern that appeals to you. This is what I did: Rows 1-4 : Using blue, work in stocking stitch. Change to cream yarn. Row 5: K1, *sl 1 pwise wyib, K1, repeat from * to end. Row 6: Knit. Row 7: Knit. Row 8: Purl. Change back to blue yarn. Row 9: K1, *sl 1 pwise wyib, K1, repeat from * to end. Row 10: Knit. I repeated these ten rows twice and then worked four more rows in stocking stitch with blue. Knit 9 rows in the colour of your choice for the top of the blanket and then cast off knitwise. Sew the sides of the blanket to the sheet. The Pillow Cast on 20 sts and knit 1 row. Knit. K2, P16, K2.

7 Work these two rows six times, 12 rows in all. K2, P16, K2. Cast off knitwise. Sew the pillow to the top of the sheet, matching the edges but stitching just inside the garter stitch border. Sew three sides, stuff the pillow lightly and then close the last side.
