2 EP46 This elongated pointed shawl features a dramatic Grand Eyelet border. Piece is worked as one long strip that turns corners with short rows and is seamed in the center. The pattern is for fingering weight yarn and is offered in two sizes. When choosing a colour, pick a solid, or tonal yarn, such as Manos Alegria Watercolours. Using a third needle as RH needle, bind off through the two sets of stitches on LH needles as if one, by inserting point of RH needle through the stitch of the piece in front and the corresponding stitch of the piece in back, through double thickness. 3 Provisional cast on - A temporary cast on that can be easily removed to return open stitches to needle. TURN - Turn your work. Switch piece from RS to WS and work next row in opposite direction. Any unworked sts will be left at end of needle. There is no need to wrap sts. W&T - Wrap and turn. Knit up to stitch to be wrapped, slip stitch to RH needle, yarn forward, slip stitch back to LH needle, turn work and continue to knit next row. There is no need to knit stitch with wrap later, when working this stitch. [yo] 4 times - Makes a 4 stitch loop. Wrap yarn over needle 4 times. [yo] 5 times - Makes a 5 stitch loop. WRAP INSTRUCTIONS FIRST HALF With waste yarn and provisional cast on of choice, cast on 45 (57) sts. Join working yarn and knit 2 rows even. SET UP PATTERN (Garter stitch, Eyelet Stitch pattern and Grand Eyelet border) Next row (RS): K2, [yo] 5 times, k2tog, k1, yo, k2tog, PM, Continue to slip the stitch marker throughout piece. Next row (WS): K38 (50) sts, SM, k4, [k1, p1, k1, p1, k1] all Next 2 rows: Knit. Next row (RS): Bind off 7 sts (1 st remains on RH needle after binding off), k1, [yo] 4 times, k2tog, SM, [yo, k2tog] 14 (20) times, k10. * MAIN PATTERN (stitch count varies throughout) Row 1 (WS): K38 (50) sts, SM, k1, [k1, p1, k1, p1] all in Row 2 (RS): Knit. Row 6 (RS): K to marker, SM, k3, TURN. k4, TURN. Rows 9-71 (95): Repeat rows 9-16 of TURNING WEDGE THREE, 7 (10) times. Then rep rows 9-15 one more time, ending row 71 (95) as a row 15 (WS). Row 72 (96) (RS): Bind off 7 sts, k1, [yo] 4 times, k2tog, SM, k1 st more than previous RS row, then W&T on next st. There are 43 (55) sts on needle that have been worked and 2 sts are unworked at end of needle. * SECOND HALF SET UP PATTERN (Garter stitch, Eyelet Stitch pattern and Grand Eyelet border) Row 2 (RS): K to end, all 45 (57) sts. Row 6 (RS): Knit. Work the remainder of SECOND HALF following instructions for FIRST HALF, from * to *. Next row (WS): K to marker, SM, k1, [k1, p1, k1, p1] all in 45 (57) sts are now on needle. Cut yarn leaving a 1 m / 1 yd long strand. Do not bind off, but leave open sts on needle. FINISHING JOIN INTO A RING Remove waste yarn at provisional cast on and place the open 45 (57) sts on a second needle. Ensure there are no twists in the length of fabric and both needles are Page 3

5 pointing the same direction. With attached strand of yarn and yarn needle, graft the two ends together. See photo below. Alternatively, 3-needle bind off could be used to join ends, although a ridge will be formed. JOIN CENTER SEAM Along length of one inside edge of shawl, pick up each garter stitch ridge as a stitch and place on needle. 96 (144) sts now on needle. See photo below. Cut yarn. Sew in yarn ends, closing any gaps. Block piece to given finished measurements, taking extra care to spread out loops of Grand Eyelet border. Repeat for length of other inside edge of shawl, ensuring the same amount of sts are on second needle and both needles are pointing the same direction. Join yarn from ball and with the size 5 mm / US 8 needle, work 3-needle bind off to join the two sides. See following photo. This is a free pattern.
