1 Anderson COUNTY Piecemakers Quilt Guild Newsletter VOLUME 12, Issue 5 February 2018 PRESIDENT Mattie Spaulding CO-VICE PRESIDENTS Rhonda Barnett & Marsha Cole NEWSLETTER & MEMBERSHIP Clara Tingle LIBRARIANS - Rebekah Roberts & Hannah Roberts SECRETARY Betty Jo Moss TREASURER Joan Beard AROUND THE BLOCK: Mattie Spaulding Guild President We missed a lot of you at the January meeting. Between the extreme cold and sickness only about half our regular crowd made it out. We had a very entertaining meeting. Our speaker was funny and showed us some beautiful quilts. If you weren't there you missed a good time. A big thanks and pat on the back to all who worked on our pillowcase project. We made over 100, with a few still trickling in, and hopefully by our meeting night they will be in transit to those in need in Puerto Rico. Cheryl worked diligently and finally found a contact. Our next meeting will be Monday, February 5. Hope you all can make it. Until then keep on sewing... NEXT MEETING: Rhonda Barnett Co-Vice President Since the weather has been so cold these last few weeks with lots of snow and ice mixed in, I have gotten a bunch of sewing done. I love spending time in my sewing room when it s cold and snowy outside. I wanted to thank Amy Aldenderfer for coming to our January meeting. She did a discussion on her path in quilting and brought several of her gorgeous quilts for display. Coming up for February, we are going to have a tutorial on the member requested pillow case dress. I hope everyone stays warm and cozy and look forward to seeing each of you at our February meeting. 4 A COUNTRY HOUSE For those of you who are not familiar with making flying geese, I have included the directions below for making them one at a time since only two are needed. If you need help, please ask. A good place and time would be at the Friday Quilt Club at the Senior Center, 2 to 5 pm. Some of you have asked about what types of buildings we will have. I plan to alternate homes with other buildings such as a grocery, a church, a school, etc. Do you have a favorite? 4
5 To make a Flying Geese unit: You need one RECTANGLE the length you want the geese unit to be plus 1/2" times the width you want it to be plus 1/2", AND two SQUARES that measure half the desired length plus 1/2". Place a small square atop the left corner of the rectangle, right sides together. On the back of the small square, draw a diagonal line. Sew on this diagonal line. Trim off the excess seam allowance, and press the remainder towards the outer triangle. Repeat with another square on the opposite end. So that you aren't wasting any fabric, sew the snippets that you are cutting off in pairs, and you will have some neat small half squares to use in another project! EXAMPLE: to get a 2" x 4" finished Flying Geese unit you would use a 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" geese rectangle, and two 2 1/2" squares. BONUS PATTERN (P.S. Filling up space) 5
