3 1.0 INTRODUCTION The WS-400 is designed t be the base statin fr wireless beltpacks WS-19 (single channel) r WS- 29 (dual channel). It cntains fur transmit/receive (TX/RX) mdules and is hused in a strng steel 19 /1RU case. On the frnt panel f the WS-400 are varius TX/RX cntrls and the antenna cnnectrs. Via XLR-3 cnnectrs n the rear panel the TX/RX mdules in the WS-400 can be linked t either a party line r a 4-wire intercm system. ASL uses the 2.4 GHz frequency band fr the cmmunicatin between its wireless beltpacks and base statins. A maximum f 8 full duplex wireless cnnectins can be made, simultaneusly perated withut any interference. Fr 8 cnnectins are needed either 2x WS-400, r 1x WS x WS- 200, r 4x WS200. (The WS-200 base statin cntains tw TX/RX mdules). In case in the same space mre than ne base statin is required, these statins have t be intercnnected by WS Link Cables (an ASL accessry prduct). A link cable cntains all signals which have t be interchanged between base statins and are cnnected t the Sub-D Link cnnectr n the rear panels. A wireless beltpack (the WS-19 as well as the WS- 29) cntains ne TX/RX mdule. Each beltpack needs t be assigned t a unique TX/RX channel. If anther TX/RX mdule is set t the same TX/RX channel cmmunicatin is garbled r nt pssible at all. A TX/RX mdule in a base statin autmatically senses whether a WS-19 r a WS-29 beltpack is assigned. The n-bard micr prcessr rutes the audi as required fr either beltpack type. See sectin 7 Autmatic Audi Ruting UNPACKING The shipping cartn cntains the parts listed belw: The WS-400 User manual Fur antenna s Pwer crd Spare fuses If any are missing, cntact yur dealer. ASL has taken great care t ensure this prduct reaches yu in flawless cnditin. After unpacking the unit please inspect fr any physical damage t the unit, and retain the shipping cartn and relevant packing materials fr use shuld the unit need returning. If any damage has ccurred, please ntify yur dealer immediately s that a written claim can be initiated. Please als refer t the warranty sectin f this manual. 3.0 INSTALLATION The unit has t be cnnected t a mains utlet ( V AC, 50/60 Hz). IMPORTANT NOTICE: The green/yellw wire f the pwer crd must always be cnnected t the electrical installatin safety earth r grund. This is essential fr persnal safety as well as fr prper functining f the WS-400 Switch the WS-400 n with the pwer switch at the rear panel and adjust the channel select switch f ne f the TX/RX mdules t match the selected TX/RX channel n ne f yur wireless beltpacks.. The WS-400 shuld nw have cntact with this beltpack. T check this, push the CALL r TALK buttn n the beltpack and the green LED f the crrespnding TX/RX mdule in the WS-400 shuld be lit. See als sectin 10 Setting up Cnnectins and sectin 11 Cmmunicatin Mdes 4.0 WARRANTY This unit is warranted by ASL Intercm t the riginal end-user purchaser against defects in wrkmanship and materials in its manufacture fr a perid f ne year frm date f shipment t the enduser. Faults arising frm misuse, unauthrized mdificatins r accidents are nt cvered by this warranty. If the unit is faulty it shuld be sent in its riginal packing, t the supplier r yur lcal ASL dealer, with shipping prepaid. A nte must be included stating the faults fund and a cpy f the riginal suppliers invice. PAGE 3

4 5.0 FRONT PANEL CONTROLS 1 RX active LED This LED will be lit when the RX/TX Unit receives data frm an active beltpack (Talk and/r Call). When a beltpack is nly listening it will nt be lit. 2 Audi Ruting LED indicatrs Indicate the audi ruting fr either a WS-19 single channel beltpack r a WS-29 dual channel beltpack. See sectin 7.0 Autmatic Audi Ruting 3 SIDE TONE trimmer This trimmer adjusts the level f yur wn vice as yu hear it in the headset which is cnnected t yur wireless beltpack. The perating area is between fully clckwise and minimum level. Adjusting the side tne des nt affect the level f yur vice as it is heard by ther statins. Fr adjustment prcedure, see sectin 10 Setting up Cnnectins 4 Channel Select switch With this switch the TX/RX channel is selected n which the base statin cmmunicates with the beltpack. There is a chice ut f 8 TX/RX channels. The selected TX/RX channel must match the TX/RX channel which is selected n the beltpack. See als sectin 9.1 Frequencies. 5 ANTENNA cnnectr On this cnnectr the supplied antenna s are t be cnnected. 6.0 REAR PANEL CONTROLS & CONNECTORS On the WS-400 rear panel are the cntrls & cnnectrs f channel A, B, C and D. The drawing shws the cntrls & cnnectrs f nly channel A and B. 6 INTERFACE MODE switch This switch determines the mde f the audi interface and the functin f the XLR cnnectrs #9 and #10. See sectin 8 The Interface t Wired Intercm 7 OUTPUT LEVEL trimmer This trimmer adjusts the utput level f the audi signal that cmes frm the beltpack. 8 INPUT LEVEL trimmer This trimmer adjusts the input level f the audi signal that is sent t the wireless beltpack. 9 OUTPUT cnnectr This male XLR-3 cnnectr is fr cnnecting either party line wired intercm r 4-wire intercm. See sectin 8 The Interface t Wired Intercm. 10 INPUT cnnectr This female XLR-3 cnnectr is fr cnnecting either party line wired intercm r 4-wire intercm. See sectin 8 The Interface t Wired Intercm. 11 LINK cnnectr This Sub-D cnnectr cntains all signals that need t be interchanged when tw r mre base statins are t be used in the same space. Only use the special WS link cable supplied by ASL. 12 MAINS switch With this switch the WS-200 can be switched n r ff. 13 MAINS cnnectr with fuse hlder This mains input accepts V AC, Hz. The fuse in the fuse hlder needs t be 1.25 Amp f the slw blw type. The bttm part cntains a spare fuse. PAGE 4

5 7.0 AUTOMATIC AUDIO ROUTING T a TX/RX mdule in the WS 400 ne can assign either a WS-19 single channel beltpack r a WS-29 dual channel beltpack. The audi t/frm this beltpack is ruted frm/t the rear panel XLR-3 cnnectrs Channel B. When a WS-19 beltpack is assigned t the TX/RX-3 mdule, the frnt panel tp LED (labeled 1-ch beltpack ) is lit. The audi t/frm this beltpack is ruted frm/t the rear panel XLR-3 cnnectrs Channel C. When a WS-29 beltpack is assigned t the TX/RX-1 r the TX/RX-2 mdule, the frnt panel middle LED (labeled 2-ch beltpack ) is lit. The audi frm/t channel A f this beltpack is ruted t/frm the rear panel XLR-3 cnnectrs Channel A and the audi frm/t channel B f this beltpack is ruted t/frm the rear panel XLR-3 cnnectrs Channel B. When a WS-29 beltpack is assigned t the TX/RX-3 r the TX/RX-4 mdule, the frnt panel middle LED (labeled 2-ch beltpack ) is lit. The audi frm/t channel A f this beltpack is ruted t/frm the rear panel XLR-3 cnnectrs Channel C and the audi frm/t channel B f this beltpack is ruted t/frm the rear panel XLR-3 cnnectrs Channel D. 6 8.0 THE INTERFACE TO WIRED INTERCOM Each TX/RX mdule in the WS-400 cntains an interface t wired intercm. The interface can be put in Party Line Mde r in 4-Wire Mde, using the Interface Mde Switch n the rear panel. Party Line Mde (the Mde switch is nt pushed): The XLR-3 male cnnectr (#9) and the XLR-3 female cnnectr (#10) n the rear panel are nw party line cnnectrs fr daisy chain wiring purpses. The audi is sent frm the wireless beltpack t the party line f the wired intercm system and frm this system t the wireless beltpack. In this mde the base statin als handles all CALL functins t and frm the party line intercm and MIC MUTE functins frm the party line intercm. 4-Wire Mde (the Mde switch is pushed): The XLR-3 male cnnectr (#9) and the XLR-3 female cnnectr (#10) n the rear panel are nw 4-wire cnnectrs The female cnnectr is the electrnically balanced input cnnectr fr audi frm the 4-wire intercm system t the wireless beltpack. The male cnnectr utputs the audi signal frm the wireless beltpack t the 4-wire intercm system as an electrnically balanced signal. 9.0 FREQUENCY BAND & ANTENNA S 9.1 Frequencies ASL s wireless intercm uses the 2.4 GHz band, which is freely available fr WLAN (Wireless Lcal Area Netwrks). The ASL system divides the available bandwidth int 16 verlapping sectins, 8 f them being used as uplad frequency (frm the beltpack t the base statin) and the ther 8 being used as dwnlad frequency (frm the base statin t the beltpack). With the channel select switches n base statins and wireless beltpacks ne actually selects an uplad / dwnlad pair, called a TX/RX channel. Each TX/RX channel serves ne dedicated wireless cnnectin between base statins and wireless beltpacks (in fact between the TX/RX mdules in thse units). It is pssible t have several WS 19 beltpacks n the same TX/RX channel, see sectin 10.2 Half Duplex. When using the ASL wireless system, the fllwing shuld be taken int accunt: The 2,4 GHz frequency is knwn t have difficulty in penetrating cncrete walls, steel walls and ther bstructins. Behind bstructins like these an HF shadw may ccur where n cmmunicatin is pssible. The antenna s f a base statin shuld have as much as pssible a line f sight t the antenna s f the beltpack(s). All bjects within that path make the cnnectin less reliable. Due t reflectins f the HF signal, ne might experience a drput n a specific spt in a building; mving a beltpack nly a few inches can be enugh t slve the prblem. Because f the use f the WLAN frequencies, ASL s wireless units might experience interference frm units like mbile telephnes with bluetth and cmputers with bluetth r WLAN cards. Try t change TX/RX channels if yu experience prblems with these. 9.2 Antenna Wiring (Base Statins) If the antennas f a base statin are nt suppsed t be directly cnnected t its frnt panel, a cable between base statin and antenna is needed (base statins are equipped with SMA cnnectrs - female at the base statin and male at the antenna). The 2.4GHz frequency experiences a big lss in any cable, e.g. a RG58 cable has a lss f 1 db per meter. S make sure that yur cable (50 hms) is suited fr 2.4 GHz and that the cable is as shrt as pssible. Make the cables in lengths f a multiple f 12, e.g. lengths f 24cm, 48cm, 120cm, 240cm etc SETTING UP CONNECTIONS ASL WIRELESS AS A STAND ALONE SYSTEM Base Statin Settings a. Give each TX/RX mdule in the base statin its wn TX/RX channel by rtating the Channel select switch. Try t avid TX/RX channels t be physically next t each ther, e.g. when tw WS-400 s are in yur wireless system, try t set them in this rder: TX/RX channels 2, 4, 6, 8, 1, 3, 5, 7. If ne uses a WS-200 with nly tw beltpacks, use TX/RX channels 1 and 6 b. Make sure the interface mde switch at the rear f the base statin is set t PARTY LINE. The internal party line is nw linking the n bard TX/RX mdules t each ther. c. Turn dwn the side tne trimmers at the TX/RX mdules (cunter clckwise) PAGE 6

7 Wireless Beltpack Settings d. With the Channel Select switch at the rear f the beltpack, select the TX/RX channel accrding t the WS-200 r WS-400 setting e. Cnnect a headset t the beltpack and insert fully charged batteries. When the beltpack is switched n, a single shrt tne shuld be heard and bth LED s n the frnt panel f the unit flash fr half a secnd. This indicates that the beltpack is functining prperly. f. When ne pushes the CALL r the TALK buttn, the LED s n the frnt panel are lit and the green LED f the crrespnding TX/RX mdule in the base statin is lit. It prfs the beltpack has cnnectin with the base statin g. Turn dwn the OWN VOICE Vlume trimmer at the side panel f the beltpack (cunterclckwise) h. Set the vlume cntrl f the beltpack at apprximately 50% i. Push the TALK buttn n the beltpack, talk int the headset micrphne and listen t yur wn vice (yu might hear a small delay ) j. Adjust the side tne trimmer at the referring TX/RX mdule in the base statin s that the level f yur wn vice is as lw as pssible k. Adjust the OWN VOICE trimmer n the beltpack s that the level f yur wn vice is t yur liking ASL WIRELESS CONNECTED TO A 4-WIRE INTERCOM SYSTEM Base Statin Settings a. Give each TX/RX mdule in the base statin its wn TX/RX channel by rtating the Channel select switch. Try t avid TX/RX channels t be physically next t each ther, e.g. when tw WS-400 s are in yur wireless system, try t set them in this rder: TX/RX channels 2, 4, 6, 8, 1, 3, 5, 7. If ne uses a WS-200 with nly tw beltpacks, use TX/RX channels 1 and Wireless Beltpack Settings d. Cnnect the 4-wire intercm system via the XLR-3 cnnectrs at the rear panel f the base statin. Each XLR-3 male cnnectr (signal ut) and female cnnectr (signal in) cnnects each TX/RX mdule t an input/utput f the a 4-wire intercm system. It prfs the beltpack has cnnectin with the base statin. g. Turn dwn the OWN VOICE Vlume trimmer at the side panel f the beltpack (cunterclckwise) h. Push the TALK buttn n the beltpack, talk int the headset micrphne and listen t yur wn vice i. Turn up the vlume f yur wn vice by adjusting the OWN VOICE trimmer t a level f yur liking 10.3 ASL WIRELESS CONNECTED TO A PARTY LINE INTERCOM SYSTEM Base Statin Settings a. Give each TX/RX mdule in the base statin its wn TX/RX channel by rtating the Channel select switch. Try t avid TX/RX channels t be physically next t each ther, e.g. when tw WS-400 s are in yur wireless system, try t set them in this rder: TX/RX channels 2, 4, 6, 8, 1, 3, 5, 7. If ne uses a WS-200 with nly tw beltpacks, use TX/RX channels 1 and 6 b. Make sure the interface mde switch at the rear f the base statin is set t PARTY LINE. c. Cnnect the party line intercm system via the XLR-3 cnnectrs at the rear panel f the base statin. Each XLR-3 male and female pair may cnnect each TX/RX mdule t a channel f the party line intercm system (see als sectin ). Everywhere this cnnectin is made, the internal party line is interrupted d. Turn dwn the side tne trimmers (cunter clckwise). PAGE 7

Adjust the OWN VOICE trimmer n the beltpack s that the level f yur wn vice is t yur liking Wiring Cnfiguratins when cnnecting t party line intercm systems Cnnecting t party lines can be dne in many different ways. Belw a few examples: Example 1: When tw WS-400 base statins are installed and 8x WS-19 single channel beltpacks are available: The drawing shws hw t cnnect all WS-19 s t the same party line. Example 2: When tw WS-400 base statins are installed and 8x WS-19 single channel beltpacks are available: The drawing shws hw t cnnect WS-19 #1 and #2 t party line 1, WS-19 #3 and #4 t party line 2, WS-19 #5 and #6 t party line 3 and WS-19 #7 and #8 t party line 4. Example 3: When tw WS-400 base statins are installed and 8x WS-29 dual channel beltpacks are available: The drawing shws hw t cnnect channel A f all WS-29 s t party line 1 and channel B f all WS 29 s t party line 2. Fr cnnecting base statin TX/RX mdules via their XLR-3 male and female cnnectrs n the rear panels (see drawings abve), use shrt micrphne cables. PAGE 8

9 11.0 COMMMUNICATION MODES 11.1 Full Duplex Mde (fr WS-19 and WS-29 beltpacks) A full duplex wireless cnnectin is accmplished by using a dedicated TX/RX channel, selected n the beltpack and n the base statin. Such a TX/RX channel links the TX/RX mdule in a wireless beltpack t ne f the TX/RX mdules in the base statin Half Duplex Mde (fr WS-19 single channel beltpacks nly). This mde allws mre than ne WS-19 beltpacks n the same TX/RX channel. Hwever, nly ne f the WS 19 beltpacks can talk at a time and have a full duplex cnnectin. Fr as lng as ne f the beltpacks has a full duplex cnnectin (talk, listen and call), the ther beltpacks are able t listen t the signals cming frm the base statin, but are nt able t call r talk. In case f half duplex use f WS-19 beltpacks whilst the crrespnding TX/RX mdule in the base statin is cnnected t a wired party line intercm system, the fllwing has t be taken int accunt: The side tne prevents (when prperly adjusted) the micrphne signal cming frm the talking beltpack t return t the beltpacks. The listening beltpacks d nt hear the talking beltpack. T slve this, the side tne trimmer f the cncerning TX/RX mdule shuld be turned dwn (fully cunter clckwise). But there is a drawback: the user f the talking beltpack will hear his wn vice with a delay f 24 msec and via the OWN VOICE link in the beltpack (n delay). The effect f hearing yur wn vice twice (with and withut delay) can be diminished by turning dwn the OWN VOICE trimmer.
