Cntinuusly Variable Attenuatrs are used in applicatins where the need exists fr cntrlling signal levels cntinuusly withut interrupting the circuit. Mst Weinschel mdels are in linear scales, and have lw frequency sensitivity with brad frequency cverage, resulting frm the use f prven Aerflex / Weinschel resistive films. The resistive elements lcated in these Variable Attenuatrs prvide lng-term stability ver temperature and humidity. Manual Step Attenuatrs are primarily used in areas demanding bradband accuracy with lw SWR and accurate repeatability ver large attenuatin ranges. The Weinschel step attenuatrs are widely used in many types f ATE and OEM systems perating thrughut the wrld. There are several designs f cntinuusly variable attenuatr available in the marketplace: Pistn, card, tee, and resistive center cnductr. Weinschel ffers nly the Variable Card Attenuatr Design. Weinschel s 940 series uses a card resistr n a disk with a mvable caxial cntact (shwn belw) similar in nature t a ptentimeter and prvides an incremental range f 114 db incremental range at 2 GHz and 60 db at 4 GHz. Because the shunt film is cnnected t grund permanently, in rder t achieve the extended attenuatin range, the minimum lss f this type attenuatr is higher (4 t 6 db). What is the difference between insertin lss and incremental attenuatin? Step and variable attenuatrs have insertin lss and als incremental attenuatin. Insertin lss is the lss thrugh the attenuatr when all cells are switched t zer db. It is the residual lss f the device itself. Insertin lss usually increases with frequency reaching several db at the higher frequencies and generally has very flat frequency respnse. Incremental attenuatin is the attenuatin values f the attenuatrs cells relative t the insertin lss. Since insertin lss is always present, the perfrmance f a step r variable attenuatr is always given as incremental attenuatin relative t insertin lss.
