By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers. Goal 3-A31 (from Grade 3 Goals Checklist) Fluently multiply to find products of two one-digit numbers.

2 Contents Multi-Match Cards (Reproducible) 3-7 Recording Sheets 8-9 Answer Keys About Multi-Match Card Sets This card set is similar to other Multi-Match sets developed by Angie Seltzer for grades K-8. Each set consists of 9 groups of 4 cards that have matching values and/or models. Any two of the four cards in a group can be considered a match. Thus, there are multiple ways to make pairs relating numbers, expressions, and models. J J J J J? 3 7 Mathematics Content for This Set The star cards show two multiplication factors and the triangle cards show the products. Each square card shows a shaded array of squares. (Arrays on grids also provide an introduction to area.) The circle cards shows equal groups of smiley faces. Meaning of Set Code 3-A31- The code stands for Grade 3, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Cluster 3, Goal 1. The stands for s facts. The set code includes the goal number in the checklist developed by Angie Seltzer. Related Multi-Match Card Sets Multi-Match cards are available for 2s through 9s facts. There is also a FREE set, called Top Nine Multiplication Facts, that focuses on 9 of the most difficult facts. General Preparation Copy the card set onto heavy paper, making one copy for each group of students or for a math center. (Plain paper can also be used but cards will be less durable.) Cut apart the cards. Store the cards in a small bag or envelope and tape the title card to the outside.? 7 Matching Activity Setup Shuffle the cards. The Wild cards are not needed. Make copies of the related recording sheet for each student. Instructions Have students separate the star cards from the other cards. Tell students to organize them from least to greatest value, face up. Then have students sort the rest of the cards and match them with star cards. Remind students that each star card matches one card from each other suit. After cards are sorted, have students complete the recording sheets. Variations To make the activity easier, use only four to six groups of four matching cards. Or, you many want to use only two of the four suits. Extension After students finish the recording sheet, you may want to have pairs of students practice multiplication facts by taking turns drawing a card and asking their partner to state the complete multiplication fact orally. Using Multi-Match Games These cards are designed to be used with any of the easy games in the free Multi-Match Games Guide. As students use the cards during games, they will improve their mental math and modeling skills. These skills are critical in meeting the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Students will learn to look for shortcuts and make generalizations such as the ones in the box below. Making Generalizations As students use the cards, encourage them to look for and discuss patterns and generalizations. The order of two factors does not matter. If either factor is, you can count by s to find the product. When you multiply an even number by, the product ends with 0. When you multiply an odd number by, the product ends with.
