1 1000-Grid Card Set This Really Good Stuff product includes: Grid Cards, in Ranges of Missing Number Acetate Cards This Really Good Stuff Activity Guide Congratulations on your purchase of this Really Good Stuff 1000-Grid Card Set a useful tool to help students practice mental math and problem-solving skills by adding and subtracting numbers within Meeting Common Core State Standards This Really Good Stuff 1000-Grid Card Set is aligned with the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics: Number and Operations in Base Ten: 2.2 Count within 1000; skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s. 2.3 Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. 2.7 Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds. Introducing the 1000-Grid Card Set Before introducing the Really Good Stuff 1000-Grid Card Set, make copies of this Really Good Stuff Activity Guide, and file the pages for future use. Or, download another copy of it from our Web site at Pointing to the Cards, indicate that you are going to use them to help students practice adding and subtracting large numbers. Ask students to share what they notice about the 1000-Grid Cards: Are there any patterns on the grids? What number ranges are shown? How are the Cards similar to a 100-grid chart and how are they are different? How are the Cards are similar to a 200- grid chart and how are they different? Show students the Missing Number Acetate Cards, and explain that you are going to use the Acetate Cards to cover some numbers on one of the 1000-Grid Cards. Tell students to use mental math to determine what numbers you covered. (For example, cover all of the numbers in a range except those that illustrate counting by fives.) Place the Acetates in your math center for students to use to practice skip counting. Mystery Ranges Place the 1000-Grid Cards inside a pocket chart, on a large table, or on the floor. Have students help you place the Cards in order, telling students to call out any patterns that help them to determine which number range comes next. Counting Activities 1. Write one of the following sentences: Count by twos, Count by fives, and Count by tens on three index cards, and mix up the three index cards. Ask a student to choose a number to start with, choose an index card, and pick a number less than Direct the class to practice skip counting from the student s number to 1000 following the skip-counting method on the index card that the student picked. Variation: Have students skip count backward when counting by twos, fives, or tens from the student s number. 2. Play Start-With and Get-To Activity: Ask students to choose two 1000-Grid Cards and a number on each Card. Another way to play this activity is for a student to pick a Card and practice counting forward and backward from the first number to the last number on the Card. Less Than, Greater Than Choose two numbers on one 1000-Grid Card, and write them on the classroom board. Tell students to chorally tell which number is less or more by saying a sentence using correct math terms. (For example: for the numbers 356 and 365, students would read the numbers and say, 356 is less than 365. ) Then urge students to use the Card to figure out the difference, or the distance between the two numbers. Blank Mystery Ranges Reproducible Program a copy of the Blank Mystery Ranges Reproducible with some numbers. Place copies of the programmed reproducible in your math center with the 1000-Grid Cards. Indicate that students are to work with a partner to figure out and write in the missing numbers, using the Cards and acetates as a guide. Challenge students to test each other. Blank Number Chart Reproducible Copy and distribute the Blank Number Chart Reproducible, and divide students into pairs. Review the directions with students: 1. One student chooses a 1000-Grid Card, and writes the start number in the first box. They turn the Card facedown, and work together to complete the number chart. Partners then flip over the Card and check their work. 2. One partner covers the number chart, while the other partner gives him or her a number from the chart to write in the middle of the two T-charts on the reproducible. His or her partner completes the numbers that go in the t-chart using mental math, +1, -1, +10, Partners switch roles and complete the top two-thirds of the reproducible. 4. Each partner makes up the six addition equations and subtraction equations along the bottom of the reproducible for their partner to solve. Place copies of the reproducible in your math center with the 1000-Grid Cards. Center Range Game Reproducible Copy the Center Range Game Reproducible and place the copies in your math center along with the 1000-Grid Cards. Partner A chooses a Card, picks a smaller range within the one on the Card, and calls out a number within his or her range. Without looking at the 1000-Grid Card, partner B writes where the number should go within that range of numbers. Partners check each other s work; and once the reproducible is completely filled in, the partners take another copy of the Center Range Game Reproducible and switch roles. Counting Strips Reproducibles Make one copy of the Counting Strips Reproducibles, and add appropriate numbers to the blank counting strips. Copy your programmed reproducible, review the directions with students, and tell them the copies of the reproducible will be in your math center with the 1000-Grid Cards. Students are to work on the reproducible with a partner. Number Detectives Reproducible Copy the Number Detectives Reproducible, and place them in your math center with the 1000-Grid Cards.
