5 Pins & Wire forms Clevis Pin Design Considerations Clevis pins refer to a class of non-threaded fasteners that are characterized by their low cost, reusability, and less precise design. Developed in the early part of the twentieth century, clevis pins were known as cornpicker pins because of their wide use in agricultural products. Generally, clevis pins are cold headed or turned from cold finished steel, including C1010-C1018 carbon steel, 1045, 4140 alloy, and Nonferrous grades are also available. G.L. Nearly all retaining rings provide design and engineering benefits versus other fasteners. In particular, retaining rings replace the high cost of machining shoulders, the labor intensive installation of cotter pins and washers, and the uncertainty of collar and screw designs in a vibrating environment. In most cases, machining a groove is cheaper and more resilient than turning threads and using a nuts and bolts approach. ROUND SECTION WIRE RING SNAP RING Which one looks stronger? Snap rings often yield a stronger holding power due to flat surfaces of the snap ring and mating material. How do snap rings compare to other types of retaining rings? Part of the answer to the question lies in how retaining rings are made. Snap rings are usually stamped or laser cut from coil or strip, while round section wire rings and some spiral rings are coiled from wire. The differences in manufacturing techniques yield differences in costs and product features. In particular, coiling is slower than stamping, yet coiling does not require high cost tooling. In addition, no material is wasted in coiling as it is with the break out on the inside diameter of a stamping. Generally, stamped rings are cheaper than coiled rings on smaller sizes. 11 Power Transmission Shaft keys Shaft keys, also known as machine keys, serve a number of purposes related to the transmission of energy and torque. They are designed to address engineering and performance issues of assembly cost and the stresses and tensions which occur in machine components during power transmission. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) states in ANSI B17.1, Keys and Keyseats, a key is defined as, A demountable machinery part which, when assembled into keyseats, provides a positive means for transmitting torque between shaft and hub. A keyseat (referred to commonly as a keyway), is An axially located rectangular groove in a shaft or hub. Shaft keys are usually made from metal and are designed to mate with a keyway (also known as a keyseat) that is cut into a shaft. Similarly, a keyway slot is cut into the center of a gear, pulley, or sprocket, so that the shaft can be assembled to other machine components. Key Keyed Shaft Keyseat/ Keyway A shaft key is fitted to a mating keyway in a shaft and sprocket. Shaft Keys as Safety Stops Should a power transmission component become damaged or break from stress and wear, the potential for catastrophic and collateral damage is enhanced because of the linkage of the components. For example, a rotating shaft on a combine can stop when the header of the combine hits a rock. Even though the shaft is stopped, the engine is still running and transmitting energy to the shaft. Such energy must disperse, and will normally take the path of weakest design in the assembly.
