18 Chip Breakers Chip breakers literally break apart chips as the material is being machined which improves chip ejection from the cutting tool. Chip breakers are staggered on the flutes and designed to provide a smooth edge finish; however, in some applications visual lines may be seen. Chip breakers are typically used to: 1. Achieve a clean cut through fibrous materials such as plywood, dense solid wood, phenolic and composite materials. 2. Ease cutting pressure; reducing vibration and heating to improve tool life. 3. Increase the overall feed speed. The chip breaker option is available on most tool designs. Add the suffix CB to end of a standard tool part number Corner Radius Corner radiuses are added to cutting tools when an application requires a soft or broken corner as opposed to the standard square corner of most solid carbide router tools. Typically used in contouring applications on multiple axis CNC machines. Standard corner radii are:.015".020".030".045".060".090".125" Add the suffix CR-Radius Dimension to end of a standard tool part number. Ex: CR-015 Custom Solid Carbide Tooling Allied Tool Group has capacity to custom machine large or small quantity orders of custom engineered tooling. We will consult with you to understand the requirements of your application, discuss the various tool options and provide a comprehensive quotation. When your order is placed, a CAD drawing of your tool will be sent for approval. Page 18
19 Left Hand Tooling Left hand rotation tools are typically used to prevent blow out that can occur when exiting material with right hand rotation tools. Often used in solid wood applications or in machinery that requires left hand rotation tooling. The left hand rotation option is available on most tool designs. Add the suffix L to end of a standard tool part number. Neck Clearance Neck clearance option reduces the diameter of the tool shank above the tools cutting edge. This provides clearance between the tool shank and material being machined to ensure no rubbing will occur when the tools depth of cut is exceeded. A tremendous amount heat is generated in very short period of time if contact occurs between the non-cutting edge of a high RPM solid carbide tool and the material that is being machined. This heat will certainly reduce tool life and possible damage or break the cutting tool. It is likely that damage or marring will occur to the material being machined. Neck clearance is done for several reasons: 1. To allow for standard or extra long tools to machine materials in applications that requires deep depths of cut. 2. To allow use of a standard length tool to machine thicker materials using a multiple pass operation. A shorter length of cut will maximizes the strength of a tool increasing tool durability and allowing for the fastest possible feed rate. Neck Clearance Length of Cut Effective Depth of Cut The neck clearance option is available on most tool designs. Add the suffix NC - with dimensions for the total effective depth of cut to end of a standard tool part number. Ex: NC Explanation: A standard tool has a 3/4" length of cut. Neck clearance will be added over 1/2" of the shank length which yields an Effective Depth of Cut of 1-1/4". Overall Length Modifications Modifications to the overall length of standard tools are typically done to increase reliability by improving tool strength by m sizing the tool closer to the material being machined. Add the suffix OL-with dimensions of the total overall length of the tool to end of a standard tool part number. Ex: OL Explanation: A standard tool has a 3" overall length. The tools overall length has been reduced to 2-3/4". Page 19
20 Brad Point Drills Carbide Tipped Brad Point drills provide a clean entry and flat bottom hole in laminated composite wood and solid wood materials. Brad Point drills will likely blow out the exit hole in most materials; however, when supported by a spoil board an acceptable exit hole may be obtained in some materials. Brad Point drills are typically used to provide a flat bottom drill hole for dowels, shelve pins and fasteners. Drills utilize the industry standard 10mm diameter shank with set screw flat. Solid carbide drills are particularly useful in high duty cycle applications on high speed CNC machines. Thru-Bore drills are designed to provide clean entry and exit holes in single or double-sided laminated composite wood and solid wood materials. In some materials chipping may occur when drilling the entry hole. Drills utilize the industry standard 10mm diameter shank with set screw flat.
