2 At our dealer s warehouse ecyclable packaging The evident problem of waste management has increasingly become of worldwide importance. Always watchful of the problems that surround us, istemi already several years ago decided to use only recyclable materials for its packaging. Waste recycling means all the strategies employed to recover waste materials and reuse them rather than dispose of them. Many types of plastic can easily be recycled. All our packaging in which plastics are used is recyclable and marked with the Unicode (recycling symbol) which contemplates numerical identification of recyclable plastics. HPE High density polyethylene PVC Polyvinyl chloride PP Polypropylene or Moplen All our packaging in which paper and cardboard are used are marked with the EY recycling symbol, meaning that the raw material (paper and cardboard) is recycled and 100% recyclable. All our packaging is printed and glued with vegetable oil-based inks and glues with an ecological intent: reduction of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and easier recycling of printed products. 3 THE POTAE OUTE a versatile machine Wood milling machines are possibly the most versatile machines that exist for woodworking. They can be used to carry out a whole series of finishing operations that would require hour upon hour of hard work and toil with other systems and achieve an unimaginable degree of precision. Although professional operators and woodworkers are fully familiar with its vast array of possibilities, hobbyists often see milling machines as a slightly mysterious tool and approach them with some diffidence. In fact, a milling machine is not a drill. To use it to its full extent, operators must first get to know its great potential, and then start working with it - which requires a certain degree of training. On the other hand, the satisfaction it can give is considerable. Items made as a hobby often a little awkward and bulky can be embellished with smooth corners, curves and rounded edges, and traditional, cabinet-making joints can replace joints made using pins or glue. In sum, a whole new world has opened up for IYers that was previously off-limits to them. Naturally, all this requires an extra effort, to ensure that customers are adequately informed. This is why we have decided to provide a summary of basic information to be supplied for this type of customer, when they express a desire to approach the world of milling. All milling machines have either plastic or metal loadbearing frame, which contains an electric motor that can reach approximately 30,000 r/min. The shank is fitted directly onto the axis of the motor and can be either like a clamp - that is, capable of accepting cutters with a cylindrical shank and a single diameter, or with interchangeable clamps. The motor unit is often equipped with a cylindrical collar so that it can be mounted onto a drill support which, in some cases, can be very useful. The base can be round, rectangular or horseshoe-shaped, or it can be a combination of these. Nonetheless, it is always equipped with one, two or three columns. The motor unit is mounted on these and moves vertically. Its movement is limited by upper limit switches and it is kept upright using springs. Milling machines are also fitted with a screw or knob to lock the motor unit at the height required, as well as a device to adjust downward movements. Vertical movements must be precise, delicate and smooth. imit switches must be easy to adjust and must not give way under pressure, under any circumstance. On professional machines there is a small revolving turret on which three bolts with different, adjustable heights are fastened so that the depth required can be achieved with three consecutive passes and so that neither the cutters nor the motor is subjected to excessive force, even though its power is remarkable. Generally speaking, manufacturers always stress the run of their machines. However, this is not particularly important for IYers and could confuse them in terms of their real capabilities. The maximum milling depth is given by the length of the cutting edges on the cutter plus the length of the shank remaining between the clamp and the cutting edges. A run of more than 50 mm can only be used to make step ledges, such as those used in shutters. However, a milling machine is not the most suitable machine for this type of work, which could be carried out much better with one or more precise passes using a circular saw or a router. This is because - as those who use milling machines quickly realise - the base does not rest on the piece for at least half of its width, and it is fairly easy to make it swing without meaning to, with awful results. The base of the milling machine is not just used to give the machine a safe, smooth support, but is also used to hook, screw or fasten guides and accessories onto all of the machines present on the market, so that the machine becomes more complete. As such, it is best to rely on the safe, solid and secure guides that are supplied with every milling machine. These can be broken down into three categories: those that are used only near edges, those that can be used even at the centre of a panel, and those used for specific works, such as joints, butts, milling uprights on shutters etc. The first group contains a parallel guide and external copier, also known as the contour guide or curvilinear square. The parallel guide usually contains U or horseshoe-shaped plate fastened onto a couple of round or hexagonal bars, which run side by side along practical grooves located on the base plate and can be locked at the point required. The external copier is used to follow (copy) curved edges in a precise manner. 3

4 TOO FO POTAE OUTE Cutters rotate and are shaped like a chisel, just like a circular saw or an electric planning machine. They have a rather striking cutting speed (obtained by multiplying the circumference of the cutter by the number of revs). The cutting edge on a cutter with a diameter of 10 mm and 25,000 revs travels 785 meters in a minute; that is, approximately 13.1 m/second. This cutting speed is suitable for use with the vast majority of both hard and soft woods. There are two types of cutters: those with a cylindrical shank and those with a threaded shank or cores. Other cutter features: cutting edges can be either in H or in HM. They can also have pin guides or bearing guides, different cutting edges, and may be modular. MATEIA. High speed steel tools cost less, but lose their cutting edge quicker and are only suitable for soft woods (poplar, pines, etc.). H tools can be used on soft woods as well as fir, chestnut, and durmast, albeit with very light passes. Harder woods, chipboards (plywood, MF, etc.), hard plastic materials and light alloys must always be worked with HW cutters (often known as widia, after the name of its first manufacturer). This ceramic product is made out of sintered tungsten and wolfram, with elevated hardness. If the shape required is not available in HW, it must be obtained as accurately as possible using the cutters available, and then finished using H cutters. These will naturally lose their cutting edge very quickly. Although cutters can be subjected to grinding, they cannot be ground on your own. Even professionals turn to specialist companies for this type of work. CUTTE WITH GUIE can be used to follow any shape with great precision and without using copying devices. These can be pin guides, guides shaped inside the body of the cutter itself, or bearing guides. The latter are almost always made of steel. They cost less but require light, quick passes to avoid overheating the pin - which revolves along with the cutter - and burning the wood. On the other hand, bearing guides can be used to create different shapes using the same cutter, just change the bearing with one that has a different diameter. If the diameter of the pin or bearing in a straight cutter is identical to the cutting edge, it will form a trimmer that can be used to trim the edge of a panel covered with a casing or trim laminated facings right to the edges (with an HW cutter). When used with a portable milling machine, cutters can be employed to create a vast array of both geometric and ornamental decorations, both when working freely or when using a tool - either guided or fastened to a workbench. Four different types of working processes can be employed, each of which includes a large number of variations, depending on the type of cutter used. eliefs or negative decorations: different cutters are available to create any type of decoration, from those with conical points used to trace light grooves, to those with front cutters that can be used to perfectly plane surfaces. Joining pieces, butt joints or thread splicing: Perfect, visible and blind dovetail and finger joints can be swiftly created. Modular cutters can be used to make quick, precise glue thread joints, tongue and groove joints, or finger joints, or even joints with more complex shapes. Moulding: straight or curved, they are an innumerable variety. This is in part because the cutter itself can create different shapes by varying the depth of the cut or by working the piece at different distances from the edge. Trimming: can be used to trim edges on boards, as well as veneered surfaces, or those covered with plastic facing. Wood can be trimmed using a flexible shaft, with the aid of the right cutters. Always keep these tips in mind: 1. Only use cutters that are perfectly sharp. 2. Check that the cutter has been fastened flawlessly. 3. o not force the cutter when it has lost its cutting edge, it could overheat the tool and separate any inserts provided. 4. For greater safety, only use cutters with a cut limiter Using a tool with a cut limiting device prevents the tool from rebounding when working. 5. Always check and adjust the number of revs on the electric router machine according to the diameter of the cutter. 4

HM brazed cutter with spurs for making grooves on any kind of wood For hand milling machines urface and T -joints Except for some small differences in use from one machine to another, determined by the presence or absence of guide accessories that facilitate the operations, the element that determines joint precision is the perfect equidistance of the seats from the outer edges of the workpieces. In surface joints this is achieved by holding the workpieces tightly adherent to the support surface on which the edge trimmer slides. In -joints or T-joints, the support surface is necessary for edge milling panels, while for face milling it is necessary to rely on either a movable square or a strip which is locked parallel with the line of seats to be cut. A reference mark on either side of the sill indicates the exact centre line of the mill allowing for precise arranging of the edge strip. uface joints 10
