Grade 7 Unit 3 Model Rockets Model Rockets In this module students will learn: Principals of Aeronautics Newton s First Law of Motion Model Rocket Nomenclature Rocket Design Concepts (Fin formation) Rocket Construction & Launch Google Earth Flight Simulator Materials: All required materials to build a rocket: Corks, dowels, gummed tape, wood glue, paper clips, Estes A8 3 rocket engines, launcher Computer with Internet access Aeronautics Study/Activity Guide September 2011 v. 1
Model Rocket Study Guide: Facilitator s Guide Introduction: Aeronautics is the science of flight. Scientists and engineers who study aeronautics learn about how and why airplanes fly. Using what they learn, they can design better, safer, and cheaper to build airplanes. To understand how NASA scientists and engineers begin this big job, we need to first learn how an airplane flies. Then we can answer a few other questions including: What forces act on an airplane? Can I see any of this myself when I'm flying on an airplane? What are the different types of airplanes? By the way, do birds fly the same way airplanes do? Why does NASA study aeronautics? Where else on the Internet can I learn about aeronautics? An Aeronautics Glossary Suggested Grade Level: 7 Timeframe: 8 10 hours Group Size: 1 or 2 Prerequisite Skills: Each student should bring some of these skills to their group: Ability to perform basic computer skills including using a word processing program, using the Internet for research and understanding acceptable and safe use of the Internet. Meets the following BBT Grade 7 8 Curriculum Outcomes 1. Students will apply the knowledge and skills necessary for safe and responsible operation of equipment and resources 2. Students will apply positive, safe and ethical behaviors when using ICT 3. Students will understand of the influence of technology as it relates to self, work and society 4. Students will investigate, design, produce and evaluate technological solutions 5. The student communicate effectively by designing, developing, publishing, and presenting multimedia and online products Student Tasks: 1. Answer aeronautics questions. 2. Learn to fly using the Google Earth Flight Simulator 3. Build and launch a rocket, based on the principals of flight and the concepts and terms utilized in the aeronautics unit. September v.4
Resources and Materials: In order for the students to this project the lab will need to be equipped with the following: All required materials to build a rocket: Corks, dowels, gummed tape, wood glue, paper clips, Estes A8 3 rocket engines, launcher Computer with Internet access Aeronautics Study/Activity Guide Evaluation: Student will be assessed on the activities that they. Major components in this evaluation will be their group work, individual work, and how they apply these concepts in the construction of their rocket. Evaluation A All well done B Most are well done C 4 are well done D 3 or fewer assignment d and correct assignment d and correct assignment d and correct assignment d and correct September v.4
Student Activity Guide Activity 1 Introduction t Bernoulli s Principal, Newton s Laws. Students will the Introduction t website,, answering the 10 questions posed at the completion of the unit. Activity 2 Model Rocket Nomenclaturee and Parts Students are to identify by name, the parts of the model rocket they will build. Activity 3 Rocket Construction a demonstration for students, followed by time for studentss to the activities: 1. Air Frame/Body Tube o Roll the 8.5 x 11 paper on the dowels, being sure to glue the pages as your roll. o Make sure the dowel can slide in the paper o Cut and wrap shorter Gummed Tape for engine housing o Cut and wrap longer Gummed Tape for air frame. Complete the diagonal wrap for the entire air frame. o 2. Nose Cones o With the air frame, have students glue the #4 and #6 corks together with a small piece of dowel. o Clamp in a vise and allow to dry for att least one hour o The following day, demonstrate the use of woodworking file and have students use the woodworking files to come up with the shape of their nose cone o Fill the shaped nose cone with drywall compound to fill holes allow to dry overnight. o Sand nose cone down to smooth, final shape, using 180 grit sandpaper. o Drill 1/16 hole in bottom of the dowel and insert a small eyelet. September v..4
o Make shock cord by gluingg a small elastic into the centre of a three tabbed piece of paper. o Glue the piecee of paper into the middle of the airr frame, approximately 2 inches down inside the frame. o Knot d nose cone to elastic, by attaching it to the eyelet. 3. Engine Retainer o Cut 18ga. paper clip to length 13 cm (130mm) o Bend according to appropriate dimensions. o Measure 7cm from the bottom of thee air frame and mark with a pencil. o Drill 1/16 hole in air frame, through both side of the frame. o Insert engine retainer through the hole. 70 mm 20 mm 30 mm 10 mm 4. Rocket Fins o Using the templates provided, trace the outline of three rocket fins on a piece of cardboard. Be sure to keep the fins the same size and use a little material as possible. o Carefully cut out wings. Be sure to cut out the small notch on the indicated size. o Using hot glue guns and the rocket finn jig, glue rocket fin to your air frame. Be sure to put the notched side against the air frame, ensure a uniform shape forr all three sides. o When gluing, use two hands on the glue gun to make sure you do not get a burn. 70 mm 44 mm 64 mm m 12 mmm 25 mm September v..4
5. Recovery Apparatus (Parachute) o Use template provided to cut a piece of plastic in a hexagonal shape. This will be used as your parachute. o Cut 6 pieces of string approximately 30 cm long. o Attached one piece of string to each corner of your parachute using a small piece of masking tape. Activity 4 Flight Simulation/Google Earth Flight Simulator Assignment Your next step is to begin your flight! You are to select Learn To Fly, Student Pilot and work through lessons 1 to 6. Once you have d the lessons, you can select a flight of your choice. Once you have selected an aircraft do not waste your time! Read through all directions of your flight and start practicing. You will be given only 3 4 periods of flying time. At the end of that time you will be tested by your instructor on how to take off, level flying, smooth turns and landing. Good luck and have a safe flight! September v.4
