23 CUTS ROTARY The log is mounted centrally in the lathe and turned against a razor sharp blade. Since this cut follows the log s annular growth rings, a bold variegated grain marking is produced. FLAT SLICING The half log, or flitch, is mounted with the heart side flat against the guide plate of the slicer and the slicing is done parallel to a line through the center of the log. This produces a variegated figure. QUARTER SLICING The quarter log, or flitch, is mounted on the guide plate so that the growth rings of the log strike the knife at approximately right angles, producing a series of stripes, straight in some woods, varied in others. VENEER HALF-ROUND SLICING A variation of rotary cutting in which segments, or flitches, of the log are mounted off center in the lathe. This results in a cut slightly across the annular growth rings. RIFT-CUT Rift cut veneer is produced in the various species of Oak. Oak has medullary ray cells which radiate from the center of the log like the curved spokes of a wheel. BOOK MATCHING In book matching, every other sheet of veneer is turned over to achieve a continuous, flowing, balanced, pattern. SLIP MATCHING In slip matching, the sheets of veneers are joined side by side. The grain pattern is repeated from sheet to sheet. RANDOM MATCHING In random matching, veneers from several different logs and flitches are carefully selected and deliberately mismatched for the most desirable effect and appearance. 21

24 Suggested Veneer Finishing Instructions Surface Preparation The veneer should be clean, dry, and free of all foreign material such as oil, grease, wax, etc. Using extra fine sandpaper, sand the entire area to a smooth, uniform surface. Dust or vacuum the surface clean. Finishes Veneer, like all fine woods, should be finished to bring out its inherent and natural beauty. The finishing material should not be of such a nature that it detracts form the beauty of the wood. Nearly all fine wood is finished to a flat, satin or non-glossy appearance. The architect or the designer usually specifies various types of finishing systems. It is important that a recommended system be employed rather than combining systems or products of various manufactures to short-cut the specifications. The recommended systems are as follows. Synthetic Varnish System (Alkyd) Apply one coat of clear sanding sealer according to the manufacturer s directions. Brush or roller application is recommended. When dry, generally after three to four hours, sand with a fine sandpaper and dust clean. Finish as desired with a flat varnish for a matte sheen, a satin finish for an eggshell sheen, or apply a second coat of the sanding sealer to obtain a semi-gloss sheen. VENEER Poly-urethane Varnish Systems Urethanes are highly resistant to abrasion, marring, detergents, grease, oil, water, and alcohol and they produce a hard, tough film. This finish is not recommended for use over sanding sealer, lacquer or shellac. Apply two to three coats of the desired finish sheen, sanding lightly between coats. Brushing is the preferred method of application. Shellac and Varnish Systems Care should be taken that old shellac is not used. Shellac has a normal shelf life of six months. After the shelf life has expired, most shellac will not dry. Apply one coat of 4lb cut shellac reduced one part shellac with one part denatured alcohol as the sealer coat. Allow to dry thoroughly, sand with fine sandpaper and dust clean. A finished coat of alkyd or synthetic varnish in the desired sheen may be applied. Note: The use of paste wood filler on open grain woods such as Oak, Ash or Mahogany prior to the application of any of the above systems is optional. Filling uniforms the surface and is especially desirable on horizontal work areas.
