Dana Dempsey licensed optician frame magician 2.1.c. MOSH Framemakers Homegrown in Coquitlam, Dana began her journey as an Optician after graduating from Douglas College. Inspired by a seminar where she met another creative mind like her own, Sara Moshurchak, Dana knew in that moment what her true calling was. She continues her apprenticeship and aspires to become the fourth female framemaker in the world by carrying on the tradition of hand crafting custom eyewear. Course Description Learn elements of the perfect eyewear fit and some of the more difficult adjustments like: making wide frames fit tighter, moving temple bends forward and backward, adjusting bridges for flat/petite noses, tips for adjusting wood and horn and so much more! Sara believes that giving great adjustments is an easy way to encourage loyalty in clients. They are looking for an optician who prides themself in paying attention to the details and the best way to deliver that is through a thoughtful and personalized fit assessment and adjustment. 1

3 TRAINING WITH SARA MOSHURCHAK HOW TO HANDLE DIFFICULT ADJUSTMENTS OUTLINE SEMINAR LENGTH: 55 minutes COURSE DESCRIPTION: Learn elements of the perfect eyewear fit and some of the more difficult adjustments like: making wide frames fit tighter, moving temple bends forward and backward, adjusting bridges for flat/petite noses, tips for adjusting wood and horn and so much more! INTRO + BIO 1 slide Introduce ourselves and give a short background about who we are, where we work and how we found passion for working together. THE PERFECT ADJUSTMENT 6 slides We will provide images and description of the techniques needed to achieve the desired outcome for the following steps to the perfect adjustment. Bridge: Nosepads should be snug so that when you shift the frame from side-to-side that there is not much horizontal movement. The angle of the nosepads should exactly match the angle of their bridge. Make sure the frame is straight. Keep in mind no one is symmetrical. 1

4 Back Vertex Distance. Get them to put their chins way down and ensure both lenses are the same distance away from each eye. Tightness on side of head. The temples should ride loosely to the side of their heads. If you can stick your fingers between their head and the temples, this will need to be fixed. Temple Tip Bend. Work each ear separately. There are 2 major sources of pain around the ear: The small piece of cartilage on the mid-back of the ear. The temple tip should have a sharp 45º bend and should not touch the piece of cartilage The mastoid process. Make sure that the tip matches the contour of their mastoid process. Flare it in and out if necessary Take the frames off and on a couple of more times and make sure that they do not pop off or move forward down the client s nose. BRIDGE ADJUSTMENTS FOR LOW + FLAT NOSES 2 slides The 3-step process on how to get the frame to sit nice and high. It s all about the angles. How to pull the frame out so eyelashes don t touch and how to match the pantoscopic tilt to their face. The nosepads I find are the most comfortable: where to buy them. BRIDGE CONTOURING 3 slides What to do when the frame is leaving sore red marks on the clients nose. How to assess where the sore points are. The tools needed, how to file away the material and how to touch up the frame so it looks nice (so the client won t even notice that you did any work). 2

5 SHORTENING A SCREW 2 slides Have you found the perfect screw width, but it s too long? I will demonstrate how to shorten a screw to the ideal length. It s a simple adjustment that can be made with 3 tools. FILING OPEN TEMPLES 4 slides + video The supplies and tools needed. Ensure the frame is fitting straight and that the panto tilt is how you want it. Images on how to position the frame and files to remove the material on the temples without filing into the barrels. This is the proper way to open a frame as heat can lead to issues such as loose hinges and overheated/burned frames. Show a slide about the ideal open angle and temple curve needed for a good fit, and the one exception to this rule: spring steel frames. HOW TO TIGHTEN A FRAME THAT HAS BECOME LOOSE 3 slide Without ruining the lines of the frame front, how to tighten the fit of a frame on the side of a client's head. I ve got a few tricks up my sleeve for minor tweaks, otherwise, these are the steps: Acetate: to heat the frame without loosening the hinges and burning the material, and how to roll the frame end over to bring in the temple. Metal: how to grip the frame with pliers without damaging the paint finish and without chipping the lens or breaking the solder point. 3

6 TIPS FOR HORN + WOOD ADJUSTMENTS 1 slide Lens insertion and removal techniques, temperatures to adjust these frame materials, care instructions. This is advanced skills that require lots and lots of practice. Failure is the best teacher, so burn and wreck a few.
