1 Planking Planking (or automatic straking) is for automatically dividing predefined areas, such as decks and bulkheads, into planks based on the parameters of available stock, then generating a BOM automatically. Previously, straking had to be done manually, so an automatic method of straking represents a significant saving of time. Automatic straking also works with prefabricated aluminum extrusions and sandwich panels. See Appendix B: Planking for more information. ShipConstructor planking introduces the following features: Automatically fill an outer trim loop with planking stock. Create planking stocks from arbitrary profiles. Intelligently fine-adjust the length of individual planks, in order to stagger them or line them up with existing structural components. Planking 1
2 A finished deck using planking stock created automatically by ShipConstructor Planking Standards Planking Profile Drawings An individual plank is simply a profile extruded along a path. The profiles used to create planking can have an arbitrary shape with an arbitrary number of inner loops. To create a new planking profile drawing 1. Open the ShipConstructor Navigator. 2. In the Navigator, choose Standards > Planking. 3. Click the New Planking button to create a new planking profile drawing. Planking 2
3 A planking profile is defined as follows: There has to be at least one closed polyline in the WCS XY plane. This line indicates the actual profile of the plank. The 0,0 point in the drawing will be the insertion point of the plank. There can be any number of closed polylines contained within the outer profile polyline. These inner polylines are subtracted from the profile, so they will create holes. If creating a planking profile which will overlap, the width which is specified will have to be specified in Manager as the total width of the plank minus any overlap. A simple overlapping planking profile A more complex, overlapping planking profile with several inner polylines Planking Stocks To create a new planking stock library entry 1. Start Manager. 2. Choose Libraries > Stocks. 3. Highlight Planking in the Stocks tree on the left. 4. Click the New button to open the New Stock window. Planking 3
4 Name Enter a name for the planking stock. Stock Type This has to be set to Planking in order to create a planking stock Material Select the material for the planking stock. Description Enter a more detailed description of the planking stock. Manufacturer Enter the manufacturer s name. Color Select the color of the planking stock. This is the color the plank solids will be in drawings. Planking Profile DWG Select a planking profile drawing. See Planking Profile Drawings to learn how to create new planking profile drawings. Planking Width Specifies the width of an individual plank. The planking width is the total width of a plank minus any overlap distance. Max Planking Length Specify the maximum length of the planking stock. During automatic plank insertion, this length will be used to determine how many planks will need to be inserted. 5. Click OK to add the new planking stock to the planking stocks library. Command List Create Planking Menu...SC Structure > Planking > New Toolbar...Plate Solid Flyout > Navigator...None Command...SCPLANK Permissions...Structure Automatically fills an outer trim loop with the selected planking stock. To create planking 1. Choose SC Structure > Planking > New. Select Inner and Outer Toolpath for Plank Solid creation. 2. Select an outer trim loop and any number of inner trim loops and press Enter. Select a point on the Outer tool path indicating the starting point. 3. Select a point on the outer trim loop. This point will be the starting point for inserting planking. It will be aligned with the 0,0 point in the planking profile drawing. Planking 4
5 Select a second point indicating the direction of extrusion : 4. Select a second point. The line formed between the first and the second point indicates the direction along which the planks will be extruded. The Create Plank Solid window appears. Plank Stock Select the planking stock to use. See Planking Stocks to learn how to define planking stock. Preview Shows the profile used for the selected planking stock. Throw Direction Select the throw direction for the part. Create Production Lines If checked, production lines will be created indicating the alignment of the planks. Refresh Re-acquire the stocks defined in the database. 5. Select the planking stock to use and click OK. ShipConstructor will now fill the outer trim loop with planking stock. Planking 5
6 Planks will be inserted automatically starting from the insertion point. If the outer tool path is larger than the maximum length of the planks, additional planks will be inserted. Edit Planking Menu...SC Structure > Planking > Edit Toolbar...Plate Solid Flyout > Navigator...None Command...SCEDITPLANK Permissions...Structure To edit existing planking stock 1. Choose SC Structure > Planking > Edit. 2. Select the planks for which to change the stock. Note that the entire group of planks to which the selected plank belongs will change stock. Select Plank(s) to change: The Create Plank Solid window appears. Plank Stock Select the planking stock to use. See Create Planking to learn how to define planking stock. Planking 6
7 Preview Shows the profile used for the selected planking stock. Throw Direction Select the throw direction for the part. Create Production Lines If checked, production lines will be created indicating the alignment of the planks. Refresh Re-acquire the stocks defined in the database. 3. Select the new planking stock to use and click OK. 4. Select a point on the outer trim loop. This point will be the starting point for inserting planking. It will be aligned with the 0,0 point in the planking profile drawing. Select a Point on the Outer Toolpath indicating the edge of the first plank. 5. Select a second point. The line formed between the first and the second point indicates the direction along which the planks will be extruded. Select a second point indicating the direction of extrusion. ShipConstructor will now fill the outer trim loop with planking stock. Modifying Existing Planking ShipConstructor planking solids are intelligent objects, which are logically connected to each other. If one plank is moved using the grip points, adjacent planks will stretch and compress. This allows for individual planks to be lined up to existing structural parts, as well as the staggering of planks within a deck. Using Grip Points to Modify Existing Planking The automatically created deck can be modified by using the planks grip points. While modifying grip points, planks will be stretched and compressed as needed. If there is not enough planking stock, new planks will be inserted as needed. The following example shows how to modify several planks within a deck. The original deck as it was created by ShipConstructor after the SCPLANK command was used. Planking 7
8 In order to move the highlighted planks, select all of their grip points (shift-click to select multiple grip points). The planks can now be stretched or compressed. The adjacent plank(s) will shrink/grow as needed, until they are at maximum length. If there are no more planks which can be stretched, new planks will be inserted as needed. The resulting deck after the grip points have been moved. Notice how the original planks have shrunk, the adjacent planks have grown to maximum length, and how five new planks have been inserted.
