1 Engineering Innovation Center Autodesk Fusion 360

2 Introduction The Engineering Innovation Center is a large academic maker space with plenty of tools and equipment. In order to use these items you must have the proper training. This online popup class will teach the basic fundamentals of this tool or piece of equipment. Fusion 360 This class will teach the basics of modeling in fusion 360 and how take these files and submit them for prototyping. The key is the right tool for the right job. This class will discuss how to identify and use these tools. 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 2

3 How to get Fusion 360 The Fusion 360 program is a free download for students from the Autodesk website. To get the program go to 360/students-teachers-educators?td=aexfusio From here you can sign in or create an account so that you can get the software. Once you are signed into your account you will see a download now button. 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 3

4 How to get Fusion 360 (cont.) Once your download is complete click it and run it. This will cause fusion 360 to start downloading. Once the program is done downloading you will be asked to sign in to your Autodesk account. 6 Navigation of Software Start up Fusion 360 Sign into your Autodesk account Once your are signed in you should be able to see the working area in fusion. You can start working in this immediately or open up a file from the 360 cloud where you have saved any previous work. 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 6

7 Navigation of software This is where files show up when they are saved. This is where components of your model will be if you need to edit them later This is the main toolbar where most functions are found This toolbar allows you to change your view of an object This is the main modeling area This allows for different views of object 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 7

8 Sketches These are the basis for any part These should always be fully defined You can use relations/constraints to help define sketch geometry 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 8

9 Create a Sketch Use the start sketch button To do this click the sketch drop down menu and it will be the first option Pick a plane for your sketch 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 9

10 Your sketching area should look something like this now Using the sketching drop down menu you can access several different way to draw on this surface from simple lines, to rectangles and circles, to polygons and arcs. Using these functions replicate the picture on the lower right. 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 10

11 Dimension/Constrain These help to define a sketch To dimension use the sketch dimension tool in the sketch drop down menu To constrain an object use the menu that appears to the right of the sketch when you are in the sketching mode When you are finished with your sketch click the stop sketch button at the bottom of this menu 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 11

12 Extrusion Extrusions make your 2d sketch into a 3d model To do an extrusion click the extrude command. You now need to click your sketch, it will turn blue and have a small window that defines how much the piece should be extruded. 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 12

13 Adding features You can add new features to your modeling by using commands such as the hole command or by making a new sketch on a surface and using extrusion. To use the hole feature click on the create drop down menu and the hole command will be in there. You then click on the surface you want to put the hole onto. Once this is done a menu will appear that will allow to adjust the aspects of the hole To center the hole click select on the references then click on the long edge and enter half of your objects width Once you are done with the hole you can click ok. 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 13

14 Creating an extrusion from a surface To create a extrusion that starts from a surface use the same method of starting a sketch but choose the surface as your plane You then follow the same steps as doing this in a normal plane Try to add the extrusion shown to the right to your part. (The circle feature is found in the sketch drop down menu and you can use the concentric constraint to match it up with the outer circle edge.) 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 14

15 Adding Features (cont.) Many features can be found in the modify drop down menu These features include things such as chamfer and fillets, along with things like shell The fillet feature will add a round edge to corners and edges The chamfer feature will create a flat angle along edges The shell feature will hallow out the part creating a part that uses less material 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 15

16 Fillet To add a fillet to a piece select the fillet command from the modify menu. Then click on the edges you want to fillet You can adjust the fillet using the pop up menu that appears Try to create a fillet along the outer edge of the main body. 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 16

17 Chamfer To add a chamfer to a piece select the chamfer command from the modify menu. Then click on the edges you want to chamfer You can adjust the chamfer using the pop up menu that appears Try to create a chamfer around the extruded cylinder and the outer edge of the hole 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 17

18 Shell To add a shell to a piece select the shell command from the modify menu. Then click on the surface you want to shell You can adjust the shell using the pop up menu that appears Try to create a shell on the bottom surface of the body You can get to the bottom surface by clicking on the bottom surface on the cube in the top right hand corner 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 18

20 Drawings Drawings allow you to communicate the features of your model to: The public Machinists Investors Anyone After creating your model select the file button then click the new drawing from design button the then new drawing menu You will then get a menu to create the new drawing set it up like the one to the right 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 20

Once you have done this you will be on the drawing sheet and need to place the base view You will then need to create the projected views by clicking on the projected views button in the drawing views menu Once you do this click on your base view and then click to the right, top, and bottom of the base view to generate the other views. 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 21

Once you have all of your views you must fully dimension your part To do this click the dimension button on the top bar When dimensioning follow the following guidelines Avoid crossing lines Include all needed dimensions Place dimensions between the view Always do drawings in inches 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 22

23 Title block To access the title block your double click on the box and it will bring up a menu for you to edit the box You must use a text box for the lower left hand box 1/22/2017 Engineering Innovation Center 23

24 Export as.stl To export for 3d printing you must export as a.stl file To do this you double click on your object so that it is highlighted in light blue. You then right click and select save as stl your then will be given a menu that allows you to change a few things such as refinement which is needed when the part has many circular features.
