Basics Installing floor coverings is a philosophy of its own. The basic questions are: How do I install a specific flooring material? How do I cut the seams, wall connections and door transitions? The amount of fundamental questions is rather limited. The number of solutions, however, is endless. For your appeasement, the problems aren t really challenging.

WOLFF Technical Know-How DVD Track 23 Cutting seams of hard material To start with, we shall deal with the true Achilles heel of installing floors, cutting seams on hard material (PVC, linoleum, India rubber). The wonder weapons of modern seam treatment which have been developed in the past years are truly fantastic. It will, however, depend solely on the talented skills and preferences of the individual installers and how many of them will actually take hold as adequate methods. How is a seam cut in general? 1. As double seam cut in an unglued state? Afterwards, the floor covering must not be moved any more, not even a millimetre, which is virtually impossible when preparing for adhesive application. Moreover, a variable joint width (we ll return to that later on) is almost impracticable. 2. Or rather as double seam cut in a partially glued state? To be honest, this method should not be used at all since it is simply non-professional for different reasons. No need to explain that areas of duplicate adhesive and folded edges will become visible on the floor. 3. So possibly a bottom edge cut in a glued state? By all means, this is a common method used by craftsmen. With their care and experience, they will be able to cut the floor covering to produce adequate joints later. However, a variable seam width is not possible and the technique requires a great deal of experience. Moreover, you do not save yourself cutting the seam edges (more on this subject later). 4. Or is the scribing technique in the glued state better? This is how our grandfathers already used to do it. In this respect, it is an almost nostalgic, but nonetheless absolutely justified method. The inherent logic makes it an evergreen! We shall have a closer look at the fourth method: Prior to glueing the floor covering, we cut the edges. When installing linoleum, the cutting is mandatory to release tension from the material (read the installation instructions of the respective manufacturer for more precise information on the method). With other floor coverings, it is also recommended to create a clean seam edge. 4

It is exactly now when we enter the wonderful world of the WOLFF seam cutting technology: To cut such a material edge, WOLFF basically offers two tools in several variants. For one part, the WOLFF Lino edge cutter (item 15605), and for the other, the much more professional WOLFF Strip Cutter, which is available in three different sizes. DVD The only difference is in the anticipated strip width. Look at the medium-size strip cutter 3 20 cm (item 13351). Track 24 5

WOLFF Technical Know-How The strip cutter has three blades: a top and bottom blade and a separating web blade. This configuration is necessary when cutting linoleum to cleanly separate the jute carrier material. For PVC, India rubber and needle punch carpet, we recommend the reversion kit for hooked blades (item 13354). For a start, it is essential that the strip cutter closely abuts on the covering edge. 6

Assuming that the edges are cut, the overlapped laying of the covering lanes follows. Depending on the floor covering, the required cuts to walls and elements can be carried out very easily with the wall bevel Magic (item 16145). What you should have completed so far The required edges of the floor covering are cut, the wall connections are roughly pre-cut,and the floor covering is laid out neatly with an overlap of 2 3 cm on the seams. A high-grade adhesive which matches the covering material and a corresponding toothed spatula are now required to glue the floor covering in accordance with the manufacturer s specifications while being laid out to overlap. Having done this, the seams are cut in the glued state. Experienced craftsmen now take their knives and make the established bottom edge cut (see above, point 3) with a stylish move. We, however, achieve this faster, simpler, and more precise... which leads us right away to the WOLFF Linocut (item 40262). 7

WOLFF Technical Know-How The virtually nostalgic scribing technique paired with latest precision guidance allows the Linocut to perform a perfect seam cutting of any hard floor coverings, even needle punch carpet. And what is more, the seams can be varied. The advantages are quite obvious: The Linocut cuts the top (overlapping) lane edge and uses the lower edge as guidance following the classic principle of the combi scriber (item 13357). Using an adjustment screw, installers can determine whether a seam shall be tight (visible seam) or open for a later grooving and welding. 8

With needle punch carpet, you can allow explicitly for the material specific dimensional deviation behaviour. If a specific needle punch carpet tends to expand, for example, the seam can be cut slightly open to avoid seam warping later. The patented tilt mechanism of the Linocut allows for a wall-to-wall cutting. DVD Please watch our DVD for setting options and handling. Track 25 9

WOLFF Technical Know-How Pressing the seam For the next step, namely pressing the seam, you should use a roller. We recommend the WOLFF pressure roller Duo (item 20859) which can transfer the entire weight of the user to the rollers due to its ergonomic shape. The use of a classic rubber hammer (item 13619) would result in burns through friction heat on surface coated floor coverings. Like seam treatment, welding / jointing a hard covering requires special knowledge. The most important point, however, is a perfect joint to start with. Perfect? In this case, perfect primarily means a joint of constant depth! Such seams are created with our joint grooving machine Fräsmaster (item 13305) in 100 % precision. 10

Grooving the joint Apart from the various philosophies regarding the design of grooving disc and weld rod (round rod and elliptic grooving disc or round rod and round grooving disc), the grooving depth adjustment of the machine is critical. By the way, WOLFF delivers the Fräsmaster with a 3.3 mm semicircular blade. A fourth blind wheel on the bottom side of the machine controls the grooving depth adjustment to allow for an automatic raising and lowering of the grooving disc in relation to substrate unevenness. This system automatically guides and controls the grooving disc in an absolutely precise ratio to the set grooving depth. The precision of this machine is unparalleled! The desired grooving depth is continuously adjustable with a one-hand adjustment screw. DVD Track 25 11

WOLFF Technical Know-How Facts on the Fräsmaster: unique central height adjustment adjustable lateral guiding roller, e. g. useful for applying studded rubber floors faster and more powerful through an improved power transfer improved chip pan for 100 % dust free work hand guard when machine is raised to prevent accidents improved grooving disc exchange automatic depth control to ensure full grooving of joints even on uneven substrates simple setting of grooving depth up to 5 mm even on floors with great unevenness 3 rollers for perfect running gear stability to avoid an edging floor surface will not be damaged since the grooving disc recesses automatically when the handle is lifted integrated electronic starting current limiter for a soft start DVD Track 26 Welding / jointing Basically, two machine alternatives are available for your choice: On the one hand, the hand-operated welding machine Triac (item 13463) and on the other hand, the WOLFF automatic welding machine (item 13479). 12

Make it easy with the WOLFF automatic welding machine. Facts on the machine: Very compact! Easily operated central sealed keypad. Can be used for all elastic floor coverings (PVC, linoleum, India rubber) without retrofitting the machine. Variable surface pressure guarantees improved weld results. 4-fold welding nozzle for controlled hot air distribution. Mechanically moving parts are minimised to make it a very rugged and reliable machine. Automatic wall turnoff with lifting unit: The ventilator continues to blow and the hot air is directed away from the floor covering to the top and the side. At the same time, the front part of the machine is lifted from the floor. The next joint can be welded instantly. DVD Track 27 Settings and handling The required temperature and best speed depend on the weld rod to be used. Read the floor manufacturer specifications for the necessary information! This is also true when using the hand-operated welding machine Triac (item 13463). 13

WOLFF Technical Know-How DVD Track 27 PUR nozzle idea and development By all means, using the proper welding nozzle is an essential point. WOLFF recommends the PUR welding nozzle. It is a special nozzle for a thermal welding of elastic floor coverings with manufacturer-applied polyurethane coating. In the beginning, today s PUR nozzle was not designed for its present range of use. Years ago, WOLFF, in joint co-operation with technically oriented installers of the flooring industry, started to design the Mipolam nozzle to meet practical requirements. Unfortunately, the single-hand welding method (classic style with the quick welding nozzle) has taken hold. This fact led to the idea to combine roller and nozzle. In 2006 and in 2007, in particular, problems mounted up when welding said PUR coated floor coverings. In collaboration with the IFR Institute for Flooring and Room Decorating in Cologne, WOLFF presented the appropriate nozzle for the market. From a technical point of view, the combination of roller and nozzle is not mandatory. But, as mentioned in the beginning, the market called for a one-hand operation which we realised with this system. The facts: With the PUR nozzle, any installer, even the inexperienced, can weld or joint without burning the surface. Here, without burns refers to any burn when starting or caused by inadvertence. The newly developed geometry also helped to solve the PUR problem to true perfection. The system unites proven technology which was thoroughly revised and modified. 14

Technical details / parallels to an automatic welding machine Why does the thermal shock occur? On all welding nozzles or automatic welding machines available in the market, the nozzles are positioned above the floor covering. To be precise, the air outlet is always and invariably above the covering surface. This is the reason why only a small amount of hot air reaches the covering surface and thus the PUR coating. Depending on the material, the notorious thermal shock will be the consequence. It is irrelevant whether a wall distance of 3 mm is too large or does not live up to visual perfection and ideal touch of an individual person. What is at issue here is to present a mass-market system which stands the test in daily operation. To conclude, removal of the excess weld rod shall be mentioned. It is essential to perform the removal process in two steps. 1 2 Precutting with slide turned in Trimming with slide turned away The tool to be used is the Mozart push-off knife (item 49875) with an integrated pivoting weld seam slide. As alternatives, the ordinary quarter moon knife (item 13451) and the weld seam slide (item 13450) can be used. DVD Track 27 The first step reduces the material of the weld rod which avoids the strong lifting of the rod in the second push-off step. When the first step is missed out, the weld rod raises due to excessive material. In this stretched state, the rod will be cut too deep. As a result, a convex joint can be created which produces dents where dirt could clog! 15
