INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION BJOORN PARQUET ANGLE/SNAP LOCKING SYSTEM SQUARE PATTERN PRODUCT INFORMATION A European parquet strip with a core of high-end plywood approx. 3.6 mm wear layer, pre sanded to 120 grains. Strips A & B. Strip size L = 340 mm, W = 68 mm, T = 13 mm. 1 box contains 22 strips = 0, 508 m2. Sorting: Select or Rustic. Surface finish: Untreated or oiled. The product is available in two types, A-Strip, B-Strip, which is marked on the reverse side of the strip. Both the A- and the B-strip are required for installation of the SQUARE pattern. IMPORTANT When purchasing this flooring add always approx. 5% margin/overflow for processing and materials customization. Read through the entire installation instructions carefully before you begin to install the floor. Keep all flooring packages unopened at least 48 hours at room temperature before work start. Stacking packages airy. Then open the packages as the floor is laid. The room temperature must be at least 18 C before and during the orientation, the relative air humidity in the room should be 30-60%. TOOLS Important to be careful so as not to grease stains and dirt get stuck on the strips during the installation. Therefore, use rubber gloves or similar. The protective paper, without a polymer layer, is placed over the surface of the floor during the installation. Protect the floor prior to surface treating. Use clean shoes, with a bright sole. Distance strips (see drawing), spacers, see table for gap distance*. Table saw or jig saw. Fine pencil (0,5 mm), ruler, set square. White glue(d3) for adjustment at radiator tubes. Bjoorn tapping block (T). Pull bar, hammer. Strip remove tool. *Recommended gap distance table Longest distance (m) Gap (mm) Skirting thickness (mm) < 4m m > Strip remove tool Replaces all previous versions. Page 1/10
FLOOR SIZE AT DOMESTIC OR PUBLIC APPLICATION AREAS In a domestic environment and normally furnished symmetrical floor areas/rooms, areas larger than 10 x 10 m (maximum 100 m2) or between adjacent rooms, in L-rooms, transition to corridors etc you should use expansion joints to prevent joint openings. This is done by splitting the floor of the sections depending on the orientation pattern and direction. Consult Bjoorn.se In public environment floors, for example in offices, shops, exhibitions, etc. with heavier custom furnishings for example.counters, islands, vast product interiors, bookcases, safes, etc. must be divided into smaller sections, separated by expansion strips as heavy furnishings on the floor forming the so called fixed points (i.e., the floor area permitted not to adapt to the current climate in the room). Consult Bjoorn.se PREPARATION Remove the old skirting boards. The floor should be floating installed, i.e. the strips should not be glued or nailed down to the construction sub floor or installed against solid structures/objects. Leave an expansion gap between the floor and all fixed structural elements such as walls, thresholds, pillars or pipes in the room. See table above gap distance *. Measure out the room and select the strips length orientation, usually longitudinally or in main light direction. Calculate the number of lines required. The minimum width of a cut strip is 35 mm, you might need a width adjustment of both the first and last row. THE SUBFLOOR, THE LOAD-BEARING SURFACE Bjoorn Parquet Strip can be installed on almost any type of subfloor such as. wood floors, PVC or cement concrete floors. Wall-to-wall carpets, for example needle felt carpets needs to be removed. Ensure that the subfloor is leveled, flat (± 1 mm over 2 m), dry and clean Subfloor of wood up to 50% RH or about 8-10% moisture content at 20 C Subfloors of concrete and concrete slab on ground max 95% RH (max. 90% RH at oak wood) at 20. NOTE! Age resistant PE film, 0.20 mm, required. Elevated areas such as wood, concrete edges, tops must be sanded down or smoothed out. Screw loose areas that squeaks and replace damaged parties that is loose or damaged by humidity. UNDERLAY Install an underlay material as a noise reduction/aliasing, it shall be slight compressible and with a maximum thickness of 2 mm. Foam (density > 30 kg/m3), 2 mm Cork Underlay, Excel are suitable materials. If floor paper is used, the substrate must be very flat. All types of concrete sub floor and ceramics also requires moisture protection, even if damp insulation is in the floor construction. Moisture insulation (vapor barrier) shall be at least 0,20 mm thick, age resistant PE-- film (LDPE). The film/foil should be at least 20 cm overlap between the joints, taped, folded up against the walls and will be cut after floor skirting are installed. UNDERFLOOR HEATING At all In-floor heating floor systems, a vapor barrier (a PE-foil 0.2 mm) must be placed between floor heating system and the underlay material at any type of subfloor. All underfloor heating must be turned off during installation and during the floor s temperature must be between 15 C and 25 C. Occurring non heated floor areas within the floor area must be separated with expansion joints (profiles) Replaces all previous versions. Page 2/10
Max permissible heat output is approx. 75 W/m 2. Maximum allowed surface temperature on the floor is 27 C. This is true even under carpets and other overlays that can act as thermal insulation and increase the floor temperature over the allowed maximum surface temperature. Temperature control after installation or if the heating system has been switched off for a longer period of time The first week should have low temperature heating system C. The second week, the heating system must be adjusted as described above. Further information about floor heating in buildings please go to branschregler-och-standarder, file: Wooden floors over underfloor heating ROOM CLIMATE Ambient climate for wood floors should be 30-60% relative humidity (RH) at 20 C. At low RH, fine cracks can occur in the joints between the strips, which are best remedied by an ACC machine especially during winter time. Ventilation: Available out-and-in air conditioning system in the property, moisture must be added to the air intake during the winter to meet indoor climate requirements. INSTALLATION SQUARE PATTERN A-and B-strips Two different types of stips are necessary to install the square pattern. These strips are called A and B which is marked on the back of the strip. How to identify? Place both strips with decorative surface upwards and the long side locking profile facing you. The A-strip is characterized by the short side locking profile is to the right and for the B-strip to the left. B A CALCULATION OF THE NUMBER OF WHOLE SQUARES BETWEEN THE SIDE WALLS Measure the length W, mm of the wall where you wish to start. Select gap distance from the wall as shown in the table on page 1. A box with width 340 mm, number of whole boxes = (W 2 x 10)/340 on the wall the distance selected to 10 mm. Make a drawing of the floor area. Mark A-squares respectively B-squares as shown in the figure below. Make sure the last row is at least 35 mm wide first square-row may to be cut. See below section adjusting the first square-row. Produce initially A-and B-frames to the first line. THE MANUFACTURE OF A-AND B-SQUARES AS WELL AS AB/BA COMBINED SQUARES A square is assembled by 5 pcs A-or B-strips as shown in figure below Replaces all previous versions. Page 3/10
SQUARE A AND B Select a control board (grey in the figure above) and angle the long sides together using the control board as a straight line. Use the tapping block (see the tools on page 1) and then finally slightly tap the long sides together. Check the joints along the strip-short ends, by dragging a finger along the same-no edge or roughness may be felt! Also, check the line, by installing a strip in the assembled groove side. SQUARE B is made in the same way. COMBI SQUARES AB/BA Angle in and down B-strips in an A-SQUARE as shown below to a so-called AB COMBISQUARE Alternatively, a B-SQUARE can be added directly to an A-SQUARE. Similarly is a BA-COMBISQUARE. It is important to check all connected strips aline perfectly Replaces all previous versions. Page 4/10
INSTALLATION METHOD Installation principles for the strip short ends respectively the strip long sides Short ends: The short end tongues can be snapped horizontally or alternatively angled into all grooves using the tapping block and slight tapped with a hammer. Long sides: The long side tongue can only be angled into grooves. INSTALLATION First row 1. Make sure the starting wall is straight with a straightedge or string. Also make sure it is 90 to the centerline (C) of the floor. If the starting wall is not straight and perpendicular to the centerline of the room the row must be adjusted. See below. Adjustment of the first row Adjust the rows to correct position and pull it out a bit from the wall, so that as less material as possible is removed. Make a simple drawing tool (piece of wood with the pencil) as shown in figure and draw the line. Cut and reinstall. Place the spacers at each joint push the rows against the wall. 2. Connect the A- and B- squares in the first row. Center and check the alignment. It is important to progressively make this check. 3. Replace the straight edge with distance strips and push the floor towards the wall. It is important that the distance strips remain throughout the installation. Individual parquet strips (depending on direction) can be moved during snapping with tapping block Replaces all previous versions. Page 5/10
4. The row to be completed according to the figure above. The dashed line indicates the cutting line. See figure above. The two connected B-strips to the left are adjusted to the width (av), and can then be angled into the A-square. The connected and cut left part of an A-square to be connected to the last ful lsize B-square to the right. Save the rest of the A-box to the next line Replaces all previous versions. Page 6/10
Second row Method Choose a BA combi square and complement the left side as shown in figure below (bv) from an A- square, (=waist from row 1). 2. Now position the readymade left combisquare according to the figure, to the first row. Lift it up upon and into the groove and angle down. Check that all parquet strips are aline. Make sure that the jointcross, +, between the A and B- squaers is correct! Second row Method 2. See picture below. 1. The second row can be installed according to the following method by angling the long side and thereafter snap the short side into the previous material. The strip B1 is angled into the A-square left, so its short edge tongue just touch (marked with *) the above installed A-square. The B1 strip is then tapped (snapped) with a few light strokes on the taping block (grey). NOTE Press slight down the B1-strip at * and angle down. Continue in the same way Replaces all previous versions. Page 7/10
2. The same method is applied for the subsequent A-square. The A1-A5 strips are snapped to position with an ordinary tapping steel bar. Finish the row with B-strips in the same way as above Replaces all previous versions. Page 8/10
7. Removal of installed strips Last installed strip The figure shows an example of a special strip release tool. Lift strip slightly and insert the groove on the short side, clamp easy together so that the tip gets grip on the underside. Tap on tool and the parquet strip snaps out. Release the long side by tilting it up. Similar tools are multi-grips, tongue-and-groove pliers. Protect the strip decor side by wedging of parquet rod. Entire row An entire square-row is taken up by lifting it up a few inches and thenslight knock a tied hand in the square row above. Tilt up, put down and separate the strips, one by one, in the opposite way as it has been installed. Reverse order may damage the locking system! TIP! INSTALLATION AT RADIATOR TUBES Mark the centre point of the tubes on the strip. Drill holes 20 mm bigger than the tube diameter. Cut according to the figure. Put white glue and replace. Cover the holes or fill with joint sealer type SMP/ MS (silicon free and paintable) Replaces all previous versions. Page 9/10
SURFACE TREATMENT The floor should be treated as soon as possible after installation, Mount skirting boards along the walls. Never attach the skirting to the floor nor push them down against the same. CLEANING AND USAGE After surface treatment clean the floor regularly with a hoover or mop dry Maintain the floor according to the instructions for surface treatment material. Felt pads are recommended under furniture, protective mats under chairs with hard wheels. Always use good entrance mats. MISCELLANEOUS If you have any questions or advice for choosing surface treatment, contact Bjoorn.se via the website or sales@bjoorn.com or telephone Accessories are available for purchase at CLAUSE Wood is a hygroscopic material. This means that the wood adjusts to the ambient room climate and thus emit and absorb moisture. Bjoorn Parquetstrip - a laminated construction (plywood) with a mechanical locking system, is a superior product that moves only 25% compared to a solid strips or a plank. Despite this strong construction, minor joint openings can occur. The strip swell more in width than in length. Five strips in width swell more overall than a strip lengthwise. This as an indication of the wood s natural characteristics particularly for the pattern SQUARE-and installed in chess pattern where the four corners meet Replaces all previous versions. Page 10/10 The manufacturer reserves the right to change specifications in the instructions without notice.
