1 SRM WING FLAPS - STRUCTURAL IDENTIFICATION 1. General This subject identifies the structural components and the skin plating of the wing flaps. Details are given of specific location, material specifications and related commercial designations, material thickness, reference to applicable repair schemes contained in this manual, and limits of allowable damage. 2. Construction The flaps are of a single slotted all metal design and are comprised of three segments, inner, mid and outer, on each side of the aircraft. The inner flap is carried by the centre wing and the mid and outer flaps by the outer wing. Each flap segment is supported by two fail-safe hinge arms. The forward section of each arm is in the form of a box section attached to the wing lower surface and the rear section is supported by a bearing which passes through a slot on the flap skin adjacent to the nose ribs. The mid and outer flaps are joined by an L65 pin forward of the main spar at wing station 203 inches. A. Inner Flap The inner flap is of a conventional all metal construction with a spar, ribs and stiffeners of L72 material Ribs are numbered 1 to 19 from wing station 44 inches outboard. The spar is a self flanged channel section extending the full length of the flap and having additional reinforcing doublers at the hinge ribs. Ribs are self flanged channel sections jointed at the spar. The end ribs run from leading edge to trailing edge. Trailing edge ribs 6 and 7 have additional skin shear attachments. Ribs 6, 7 and 16 have a double leading edge portion to cater for the hinge and drive loads. Forward of the spar between ribs 1 and 2, 7 and 14 and 18 and 19 lower skin stiffening is achieved by channels intercostal with the ribs, and aft of the spar, intercostal stiffeners are added between ribs 1 and 12 and 18 and 19. Hinge arm assemblies of L93 material fit between the double nose ribs at wing stations 68.8 inches and inches. The actuator attachment fitting of L93 material fits between the double nose ribs at wing station inches. skin components are L72 material. The trailing edge upper skins are manufactured in three sections whilst the lower skin is a single section. Page 1
2 SD3-60 STRUCTURAL REPAIR MANUAL The leading edge skin is in three pieces joined by buttstraps and reinforced by doublers. A trailing edge member which is a tapering angle section runs the entire length of the flap. B. Mid Flap The mid flap is of a conventional all metal construction with a main spar, sub spar, nose ribs, trailing edge ribs and skin stiffeners. Ribs are numbered 1 to 13 from wing station inches outboard. The main spar is a self flanged channel section of L72 material extending the full length of the flap. The sub spar situated forward of the trailing edge also extends the full length of the flap and is a channel section of 7075-T6 material. Ribs are self flanged channel section of L72 material jointed at the main spar. Trailing edge ribs 9 and 10 have additional skin shear attachments. Ribs 5, 9 and 10 have a double leading edge portion to cater for the hinge and drive loads. Skin stiffeners of L72 channel section are located forward of the main spar between ribs 1 and 2 and 6 and 10 and are intercostal with the ribs. Aft of the main spar they are located between ribs 1 and 2 and 12 and 13. The structure is completed by an L72 closed angle section trailing edge member running the entire length of the flap. The fail-safe L93 hinge arm assemblies fit between the double nose ribs 5 and 10 whilst the operating arm assembly fits between the two nose diaphragms of rib 9. The trailing edge is sealed at either end of the flap aft of the sub spar by an L93 filler plate. C. Outer Flap The outer flap is of a conventional all metal construction with a main spar, sub spar, nose ribs, trailing edge ribs and skin stiffeners. Ribs are numbered 1 to 21 from wing station 203 inches outboard. The main spar is a self flanged channel section of 2024-T3 material. The sub spar situated forward of the trailing edge also extends the full length of the flap and is a channel section of 7075-T6 material. Ribs are self flanged channel sections of L72 material jointed at the main spar. Trailing edge ribs 6 and 7 have additional skin shear attachments. Page 2
3 Ribs 6, 7 and 16 have a double leading edge portion to cater for the hinge and drive loads. Skin stiffeners of L72 channel section are located forward of the main spar between ribs 6 and 15 and 20 and 21 and are intercostal with the ribs. Aft of the main spar they are located between ribs 1 and 2 and 20 and 21. The structure is completed by a closed angle section trailing edge member of 2024-T42 material running the entire length of the flap. The fail-safe L93 hinge arm assemblies fit between the double nose ribs 6 and 16 whilst the operating arm assembly fits between the two nose diaphragms of rib 7. The outer flap upper and lower skins are formed in three sections of 2024-T3 material whilst the two section nose skin is L Structural Identification The following pages contain diagrams and text to define the components, skin materials and thicknesses that comprise the Wing Flaps.
