Chippers 44th Annual Woodcarving Show Date: April 29, 2018 at Crystal Falls Banquet Hall, New London, Wisconsin Presentations & Demonstrations Woodburning & Power Tool demos sponsored by Hummel Carving Co. Due to an unforeseen reduction in space availability at Crystal Falls, the "Birds of Prey" live bird exhibition and talk by Rebekah Weiss, of Aves Wildlife Alliance is cancelled for Table Registration - Early entries will be on Show Map Have you signed up for your table yet? Pick up your block at the meeting! One cane, "Cane Alpha", has a theme: Fur, Fish, Feather, Flora. The other, "Cane Omega" is open to all creative ideas, which honor the club and its members' creativity and talent. Friendship Cane Alpha- Fur, Fish, Feather, Flora! Put your thinking caps on! Chisel, chip, burn, abrade, paint, gouge, power carve, whittle, and turn out your masterpiece block for Cane Alpha. From ungulates to piscatory images, let your creativity blossom. Bird dog your carving pals to stop Raising Cain and help us raise up our themed Friendship Cane for a Chipper's raffle prize. Or let your mind take wing and channel your burning desires to a pyrographic block. Your eagle eye otter pine for the chance to scale this challenge and perch your carved block on Cane Alpha. 4 December Club Report Show 'n Tell had a Pileated Woodpecker carved by Rodney Manthey. Dave Wirth carved a brown trout, and perch. A giraffe from Gene Bengel. A Cairn terrier carved by John Gohine for a Christmas present.

5 Dave Tuscherer had an impressive woodburning that he made from a photo of the Buck from his son's Halloween Day hunt. Jerry Bitter carved a tall cowpoke, who looks like he came off the trail. Paul Wolters showed a relief carving of a Green Bay man. Caricatures of a hillbilly and companion dog were carved by Al Jones who also exhibited some knives that he found useful.

6 At least 33 Chippers enjoyed our December potluck luncheon. John Henry (Ray's son) was in attendance selling Uncle Al's wood. Betsy Popp announced that her March, 6 day carving class, would also include an option to carve an otter instead of the fox pair. The finishing of the foxes and otter is less involved than painting the bluebirds, which have a more complex paint job and base. See details below under "Classes." Betsy Popp showed her recent carvings of a Kiwi, 3 owlettes in a repurposed ring of scrap wood, and models for her upcoming Bluebird, Fox and Otter classes. Carving Opportunities & Events: The Annual Krueger Hardware Carving Day - Saturday March 24, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Krueger True Value Hardware Store, 999 Winneconne Avenue, Neenah, Wisconsin. It is always fun to spend the day with fellow carvers and promote our club and the art of carving with all the people who walk through and ask questions. A six day class on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for two consecutive weeks. February 15, 16, 17 and 22, 23, 24, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The tuition cost will be $125 plus materials (typically ~$25). The Club offers a $25 scholarship rebate to each Chipper club member in good standing who attends the course. The class size - minimum is 10 and maximum is 15. Six are enrolled as of December 29, Students will carve a pair of life size bluebirds positioned face to face. Bring your own lunch. Carving classes will be held at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 140 S. Each class size will be a maximum of 12. Meets four consecutive Wednesdays or Thursdays. Gene Bengel & Dick Christiansen Woodburning 101 Techniques & Tricks Class

10 This introduction to pyrography (woodburning art) is open to anyone who would like to learn how to burn images on wood using modern variable temperature woodburners with several different designs of wire pen tips. This class will be the first in a planned series of classes on woodburning. Woodburners and pen tips are available for use in class. Tool use, care, safety and various image burning techniques will be taught. Experienced guest pyrographers will show their art and techniques. Cost covers wood. Eleven have enrolled as of December 29, Enrollment is now open. Thursdays, January 11-25, 2018 from 12:30 to 2:30 P.M. Cost $15 Oshkosh residents; $20 non-residents) No daily user fee. The class size will be a maximum of 14. 15 Rules and Guidelines for the Mid-Wisconsin Wood Carving Show 2018 A carver may enter any one of the following classifications, but from then on cannot retreat to a lower classification. The classifications are: Under Open to any carver under the age of 18 and must be sponsored by a member of the Novice... Intermediate... Open... Master... For the beginning carver who has not won three (3) blue ribbons in any category. Best of Class or Best of Show at any competition. Carving from Rough-outs and class projects are allowed. For the more experienced carver who had developed skill beyond the novice level. Any carver who has won three (3) blue ribbons, Best of Class, or Best of show in this class must move up to Open Class. Carvings from rough-outs and class projects are allowed. Any carver may enter Open Class. Those who have moved up from the Intermediate Class compete in this class. A carver who has won three (3) blue ribbons in any category, Best of Class, or Best in Show in this class at any competition on must move up to the Master Class. This class is for carvers who have developed their skill beyond the Open Class. Master Carvers compete for Master Class ribbons and ultimately Best in Master Class. 1. All entries must be created and carved in wood. Pyrography may be on various media (wood, leather, gourds, etc. 2. You must have a display table to enter judging. Tables may be shared, but in order to enter judging, both entrants must pay the full table fee. 3. Carvings entered in judging may have been completed in previous years, but cannot have been entered in this show before. 4. All carvings entered in judging must have the date and carvers name burned or carved into the piece. 5. Rule change: You may enter 2 carvings in competition. They may be in the same category or different categories. 6. Best of Class winners will be chosen from the blue ribbon winners from all the categories in each class. (Best of Novice, Best of Intermediate, and Best of Open). 7. Best of Show will be selected from the Best of Class winners from the Novice, Intermediate, and Open classes. Blue ribbon winners in the Master categories compete for Best of Masters. 8. Ribbons from previous years or from other shows may not be displayed. 9. Exhibit tables are available on a first come basis to all carvers. Carvers may rent more than one table. Exhibitors must furnish their own covers and floor length table skirts. 10. Tables must be reserved by April 14. Late entries will be charged an additional $ Please observe show hours. No packing up before 4PM. If you carve at your table, please clean up your area. 12. Entries must be in the judging area between 7:AM and 8:AM so judging can start by 8:AM. 13. If you sell carvings, you are responsible for collecting sales tax. Judging Categories 1. Waterfowl 2.
