2 I do many different activities in my classroom to reinforce the concept of contractions. One of the most successful things I ve done is introducing my little Contraction Crocodile. The kids get such a kick out of this! I explain that the crocodile LOVES to eat letters. He chews them up and swallows them whole, then spits out apostrophes in their place{s}. He likes to make words shorter because they re easier to say. Then I explain to the kids that the new, shorter words are called contractions. I read the Contraction Crocodile poem to the kids and then pass out a copy for each of them to add to their poetry folders. Before they can put the poem in their folders, the kids have to highlight each contraction word they find. I use my SmartBoard to practice making contraction words with the kids and then I have them complete the crocodile craftivity. They LOVE this! Any time my kids have trouble remembering how to make and write contraction words, I redirect their attention to the contraction crocodile mini poster and it really helps to jog their memories!!!

5 For this activity, I make a giant crocodile out of butcher paper and hang him up. I cut out all the word cards on pages 8, 9, & 10 and glue them inside the crocodile s belly. I have the kids choose a certain number of words from the crocodile to turn into contractions. {You can vary the number based on the kids ability level...this could be done whole group or as a guided reading activity.} The kids can use the templates on pages 6 & 7 to create a crocodile {you can cut everything prior to the activity to speed things along OR you can commission an eager parent to help out!!} The kids will write the contraction words on the {white} belly of the their crocodiles. When they re finished with the activity, I have my kids who me the words on the giant crocodile that match the contraction words on theirs. They absolutely LOVE this activity and it helps me to see which of my babies are still struggling and need a little extra reinforcement.

Students will match the contraction word cards {crawfish} to the words that make the contraction {crawfish pair}. When they ve correctly matched each pair, they can complete the corresponding recording sheet {make a double sided copy of pages 16 & 17}.

18 What s the Scoop? pages Cut out the cones and the ice cream scoops on pages and place in a baggie. Students will match the two {word} scoops to the {contraction word} cone. After they ve correctly matched all the words/contractions together, the kids can complete the recording sheet on pg. 22.

28 pages Cut out the lily pads & frogs on pages The kids will match the frogs to the lily pads by deciding which words can be paired up to make a contraction word. For example, is will be sorted on the not lily pad; I can be sorted on the will lily pad. After correctly sorting all the frogs to their matching lily pads, the kids can complete the recording sheet on page 32.

For example, if the spinner lands on is not player 1 will move his counter to the first isn t on the gameboard. Students will read the paragraphs, circle the word pairs, write the correct contraction word above the word pair, and rewrite the corrected sentence in the spaces provided. Once the sentences have been corrected, students can illustrate the paragraphs in the blank spaces provided.
