2 VANQUISH 2018 SATURDAY 2nd & SUNDAY 3rd JUNE Bristol Independent Gaming 16 Clothier Road Bristol BS4 5PS Welcome to Vanquish 2018, the 11th annual Vanquish Tournament hosted by the Bristol Vanguard, and hopefully the best to date as we have arguably the best version of Warhammer 40K within the 8th Edition ruleset to accompany an ever growing selection of cool toy soldiers to battle with in your quest for something shiny that hopefully even you significant other won t mind proudly placing on a mantel piece or book shelf for all to see. In line with 8th Edition, Vanquish has rewritten it s tournament rules, in the aim to present a competition to challenge all players regardless of your experience or competitive drive. As always, this is done within the army composition where we encourage and reward a more balanced approach to list building and steer away from the typical net list approach. Also, are Vanquish s staple Secret Objectives which add an extra layer of tactics and, if achieved, will contribute to your over all tournament score and finally, with a focussed emphasis on model scores that seek to raise the standards of painted armies and so make each game as enjoyable a spectacle to watch as they are to play. Also, Vanquish wouldn t be Vanquish without awesome looking gaming tables to battle on and 2018 is no exception as we ll have new and improved additions to The Bristol Vanguard s already familiar themed gaming tables Within this rules pack, is everything you will need to know and what to expect from this tournament, but if you should have any questions than feel free to drop us a at bristol.vanguard@yahoo.com.

3 AGE PREFERENCE, PARKING AND FOOD Vanquish participation is open to ages 16+ and we welcome all spectators but would discourage bringing along anyone younger who would require proper supervision. Bristol Independent Gaming is located on an industrial estate so there is ample parking in and around the area of the venue over the weekend but be aware that any loss or damage involving your vehicle is the owners responsibility. There will be snacks and refreshments available to buy at B.I.G, alone with some fast food outlets nearby. WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING The official rule books (or powered up digital versions), Erratas and FAQs for all of the models you will be using in your army list. All your models included in your army list, No proxies allowed so make sure you pack everything! Dice, tape measure, Objective markers, gaming card decks and glue for fixing broken models (you ll need it for those model scores). A sporting, competitive but none gamey mindset. WARHAMMER 40K RULES Vanquish will be played using the Warhammer 40K 8th Edition Match Play ruleset, along side all relevant match play updates in the Chapter Approved 2017 supplement and all valid and official Indexes, Codexes, Erratas, FAQs and Beta Test rules available at the time of Friday 18th May Excluding Forge World, Index datasheets may only be used if there is no codex for that faction. You must have the official rule books (or digital versions) for the datasheets you will be using and so you will not be permitted to use models dependent on a download, photo copy or any other unofficial format. If required, you must be able to produce the official rules for your datasheets, failure to do so will result in that model(s) being removed from your army and possibly tournament penalties at the discretion of the TOs. YOUR MODELS In order to encourage and uphold a decent model standard, all models must adhere to the below criteria. Models that do not meet these basic requirements may be removed from the game at the discretion of the TOs, but will most certainly prevent that army of being awarded any model score. Models must be complete, with no significant missing/broken parts. Models that are supplied with a base should be based, including flying/skimmer stands. Models should be wholly painted beyond a base coat. Count As, Scratch built, Kit-bashed and Converted models may be used but Proxies are not permitted. For all you tournament newbies and grizzled vets with a poor (or selective) memory, please be aware of the following model definitions which will be applied at Vanquish Count As - An appropriate model used to represent a similarly sized and styled model. Scratch Built - A model mostly built using raw materials to represent a similarly sized and styled model. Kit-Bashed - A model mostly built from multiple model kits to represent a similarly sized and styled model. Converted - A model altered to create an alternative version of that model. Proxy - A model used as a temporary stand in for another model, purely as a placement marker.

4 YOUR ARMY You army must be Battle Forged up to 2,000 points. YOUR DETACHMENTS You may form your army from any number of the Detachments listed. Patrol Detachment Battalion Detachment (May not be taken more than once) Vanguard Detachment Spearhead Detachment Outrider Detachment Super-Heavy Auxiliary Detachment (May not be taken more than once) Auxiliary Support Detachment All detachments in your army must share at least one faction keyword, such as Imperium, Chaos, Aeldari etc. All detachments must share the same faction keyword, excluding Imperium, Chaos, Aeldari, Ynnari or Tyranids. YOUR DATASHEETS Datasheets with the Primarch keyword may not be taken. Datasheets with a starting model count of one with the Vehicle keyword and of a power rating 6 or greater may only include the one model. Datasheets with the Titanic keyword of a power rating 28 or greater may not be taken. YOUR COMMAND POINTS +3CPs for a Battle Forged army, plus (or minus) depending on your Detachment choices. -1CP for each duplicate datasheet after your second, excluding those from the Troops battlefield role and up to three Dedicated Transports. So you may duplicate Troops without penalty, have up to 3 of the same Dedicated Transport before incurring a penalty for a forth, fifth, six etc, and will incurred a CP penalty for duplicating a third, forth, fifth etc Elite, Fast Attack, Heavy Support or Flyer. -1CP for each duplicate Character taken of a power rating of 5 or less, -2CPs if 6 or greater, or -3CPs if a Monster. +2CPs for including no duplicate datasheets in your army, excluding those from the Troops battlefield role and up to three Dedicated Transports. +2CPs if all datasheets have the same sub-faction keyword such as Imperial Fists, Death Guard, Sautekh, Alaitoc, Behemoth etc, excluding those datasheets that do not prevent the Battle Forged army from benefiting from their respective sub faction rule such as those included in the Advisers and Auxilia for Astra Militarum Regimental Doctrines.

5 TABLES AND TERRAIN Games will be played on 6 x4 gaming tables, set out with a mix of terrain including an ample amount of L.O.S blocking scenery themed around various worlds of the 40K universe. There will be no top tables, players will be assigned different tables in each round no matter how well they are doing. When at your gaming table, please ensure that both you and your opponent have agreed upon the nature of scenery in terms of moving over or onto and what counts as cover, but please note that the volcanic lava river and craters are IMPASSABLE!! YOUR OPPONENTS Your game one opponent will be randomly selected, but if able we will aim to avoid same club/ gaming group match ups where possible. From game two onwards all games will be formed via the swiss pairing system, but we may have to shift players slightly in order to avoid repeat match ups. GAME TIME Games will run for 3 hours. A 30 minute, 15 minute and 5 minute count down will be made before the end of the game round is announced, but both players will be allowed to play an equal amount of turns so long as a new gaming turn has not be started after the 5 minute count down. GOOD GAMING ETTIQUETTE Games should be played and dice should be rolled at a reasonable pace. Slow playing or fast rolling will not be tolerated and if suspected, action will be taken at the discretion of the TOs. It is the responsibility of those players with large model counts to be well versed in playing at a good pace. If you forgot to do something in a previous phase, learn from your mistake and move on. Once you ve moved on from moving one unit, you can t go back to that unit once you moved another. Failed dice rolls should always be removed first and a cocked dice is any dice with no side lying flat on the gaming table. Be reasonable in your evaluation of L.O.S and don t be that gamey guy. Lastly, DO NOT give tactical advice in games you are spectating. RULE QUERIES AND DISPUTES If there should be any rules queries or disputes, we advise that you first refer to the rules and FAQs that each player should have in order to validate their chosen list. If unable to come to resolve, then both players should roll off, with the winner choosing a solution. If called upon, the TOs will only first refer to the rules/faqs and then a roll off if needed, in order to get the game moving. Note, if called upon, the TOs decision is final. MISSIONS Missions will be drawn from all current and valid rules and supplements for 8th edition, and will be a mix of all the missions types from Narrative, Open War and Matched play segments. The missions themselves will be detailed in the Vanquish Missions pack on the day of the tournament and handed out on registration giving you enough time to be familiar with each one before played. SCORING There will be a total of 200 Tournament Points available to score over three catagories. 100 from Missions, 50 from Secret Objectives and 50 from modelling. Within each category there will be an incremental scoring system that will be awarded based on the level of achievement, as per the following.

6 GAME SCORES You will be awarded a score for each game base on the below. ACHIEVEMENT RESULT SCORE Crushing Defeat Scored less than half victory points than opponent, lost all friendly models or conceded 0 points Noble Defeat Scored less victory points than opponent 5 points Tactical Stalemate Scored equal victory points to opponent 10 points Noble Victory Crushing Victory Scored more victory points than opponent Scored double or more victory points than opponent, destroyed all enemy models or opponent conceded. 15 points 20 points SECRET OBJECTIVES In addition to the game score for each mission played, each player can also score their Secret Objective. On registration, each player will be given a Secret Objective deck with the below 5 objectives. After deployment, but before the first turn, each player should secretly choose their objective for that game by placing it face down on the gaming table in clear sight of their opponent, only to reveal it at the end of the game. Each objective can be chosen only once so choose wisely and keep your deck safe, as lost objectives will not be replaced. OVER WELM - You must have occupied enemy ground by the end of the battle. 6 points for having 2+ units within the enemy deployment zone. or 8 points if one of those units has the Character keyword. or 10 points if you outnumber the enemy (counting units) within their deployment zone. SURVIVE - You must retain your strength in numbers by the end of the battle. 6 points for retaining at least 25% of your Infantry models (rounding up). or 8 points for retaining at least 50% of your Infantry models (rounding up). or 10 points for retaining at least one Infantry model per unit. DETONATE - Destroy your opponents armoured units. 6 points for destroying 3 or more Vehicle models. or 8 points for destroying a Vehicle model that is also Titanic. or 10 points for destroying all enemy Vehicle models. ASSASSINATE - Eliminate enemy leaders. 6 points for 2 or more Character models eliminated or 8 points if any eliminated models are named Characters. or 10 points for all Character models eliminated VANQUISH! - Destroy the enemy, utterly. 6 points for destroying at least 50% of enemy models (rounding up). or 8 points for destroying at least 75% of enemy models (rounding up). or 10 points for destroying at least 90% of enemy models (rounding up)

7 MODEL SCORING As the world of Warhammer 40K isn t just about creating game winning army lists, we also like to recognise the time and effort put into the other aspect of the hobby, namely the modelling and so in order to award these efforts and to encourage a good standard of armies present at Vanquish, players will be able to score tournament points for their models by meeting the below scoring criteria, so please ensure all your models clearly meet each of these if you wish to score the relative points. MINIMAL All models must be to a decent gaming standard. All models must be complete, with no significant missing parts (Broken models should be repaired between games). Models that are supplied with a base should be based, including flying/skimmer stands. All models should be wholly painted to a good effort and consistency beyond a base coat. Proxies are not permitted. BASES All bases are modelled the same. The entire army meets the MINIMAL requirement. Each detachment s bases are modelled to the same theme and level (excluding transparent stands). No base looks clearly different to the rest in the detachment. 11 points PAINTED All Models have been painted beyond a minimal effort and to a unified theme. The entire army meets the MINIMAL requirement. The entire army is wholly painted beyond flat colours to highlight details, using various techniques such as dry brushing, airbrushing, edge highlighting etc. Each detachment is clearly identified and unified by it s paint scheme. No model looks out of place within a detachment or the army in general, as if it was burrowed from another collection. 12 points What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) All models, weapons and obvious wargear are as seen. The entire army meets the MINIMAL requirement. Models are represented by the official model or a suitable count as/converted/scratch built/kit-bashed model. Character models especially so. Weapons and obvious wargear (wings, jetpacks, Icons, Banners etc) are suitably represented on the models. Power weapons, for example look suitably special and stand out from a regular weapon whether held by the model or sheathed. Models using the count as rule are a suitable alternative to the official model(s) and cannot be easily confused with another model within the faction, whether included in the list or not. For example, an unconverted Soul Grinder from Codex Daemons counting as a Nurgle Plague Hulk from the Forge World Chaos Index, who both have the Faction keyword CHAOS, would not score WYSIWYG. No model is using the Count As rule to represent one Faction, if the colour scheme or model itself clearly represents that of another established 40K faction, such as Iron Hands used as Raven Guard or Chaos Khornate models using the Blood Angels faction rules. Models from a different detachment, especially those with a different sub-faction keyword (Gorgon, Valhalla, Alpha legion etc), are clearly distinguishable (usually by their paint scheme) and so not easily confused with models from another detachment in the army. PRESENTATION The entire army is painted and modelled to an above average gaming standard. The entire army exceeds the BASES, PAINTED and WYSIWYG requirements. The entire army has been modelled and painted with consistent attention to detail. All models have been painted with particular focus on neatness and/or realistic effects. The army is a coherent looking force as opposed to a multi-coloured mismatched collection of models. The army would easily look at home among the pages of White Dwarf or it s respective codex. 13 points 14 points

8 BEST ARMY Aside from the usual 1st, 2nd and 3rd tournament awards, players will get the opportunity to win the award for Best Army. This will be the army that has received the most votes by fellow tournament attendees, chosen from a selection of armies nominated by the TOs and will likely have met the PRESENTATION requirement of the Model Scoring section. Note, only armies painted by the player can qualify for this award. TIME TABLE The weekend schedule for Vanquish is as per below. LIST SUBMISSION Your army list should be in a legible easy to read format using Word, Excel or similar application.the list should at least clearly state your Name, factions, detachments, datasheets, weapons & wargear upgrades, points, power ratings and command points. You will be required to submit you chosen army list by midnight Friday 18th May We suggest you check, double check and triple check your list before submitting. Lists will be checked after this date and any late lists or incorrect lists will incur a -10 tournament point penalty. We will aim to contact you as soon as possible if any errors are found as to allow you to correct and resubmit, but you are best to check, double check and triple check your list before you submit to avoid any issues.
