Interface overview To access most of the features, tools, and options in the Second Life Viewer, you'll want to get comfortable finding your way around the menu bar at the top of the screen and the task panel bar at the bottom of the screen. 2 Bottom Task Panel Bar Sidebar: The sidebar is a multi-functional display that contains many useful tools for customizing your avatar, exploring the world, and learning about your surroundings.

3 2. Contextual menus As you explore the world of Second Life, you'll encounter both people and objects to interact with. Many common actions and tools are accessed through contextual menus, which appear when you right-click on objects, yourself, or other Residents. Object

5 3. Inspectors Inspectors are temporary, context-sensitive control panels that appear when you hover your mouse cursor over an avatar or an interactive object. Inspectors are designed to help you explore and interact with the world around you; they provide you with brief details about an avatar or object, and give you access to many options for interaction. Notably, opening an Inspector for a Resident who has voice enabled allows you to adjust the volume of that individual Resident's voice communication. Avatar Inspector

7 Object Inspector 4. Moving In Second Life, your avatar can walk, run, and even fly. If you prefer, you can also use an onscreen control panel to move around. Walk: You can walk around Second Life by pressing the arrow keys on your computer's keyboard. You can also press the Move button to open the movement control panel:

8 Fly: When you press the Fly mode button on the movement control panel, your avatar begins flying. PgUp and PgDn to fly up and down, or use the up and down arrows that appear on the movement control panel. To stop flying and return to walk or run mode, press Stop Flying: Sit: To sit on a chair or other object, right-click it and choose Sit Here from the contextual menu. Sitting attaches your avatar to the object and prevents you from moving; to stand up and begin moving again, click the Stand button that appears at the bottom of your screen:

9 5. Seeing By default you'll see Second Life from just behind your avatar, but you can move and turn the camera around to look at whatever you like -- including yourself. Keyboard & mouse Hold Alt and left-click with your mouse to focus your camera on a new point. To zoom and rotate your view around that point, hold the mouse button down and continue to hold Alt while moving your mouse; move the mouse up and down to zoom, left and right to rotate. You can press Esc at any time to return your camera view to behind your avatar. Camera control panel You can click View at any time to open the camera control panel. At the bottom of the panel are four buttons that correspond to four different view modes: Orbit camera Rotates your view around a point you select by holding Alt and clicking on an object or avatar. If you do not select a point, the view rotates around your avatar by default. You can also zoom your camera view by using the vertical slider.

10 Pan camera Moves your camera up, down, left, and right. You can also zoom your camera view by using the vertical slider. Avatar views Shows four convenient camera views of your avatar. Free view Allows you to move your camera freely with the keyboard and mouse controls.

11 6. Appearance In Second Life, you can look like -- and wear -- anything you want. Edit your appearance to adjust your physical features and body, and select clothing, outfits and costumes to wear from your inventory. You can customize your appearance however you like, or buy pre-designed avatars and outfits that other Residents have made. 12 7. Local chat and voice Express yourself! You can talk to the people around you through text-based Local Chat. If you have a microphone, you can also speak out loud using inworld voice.

13 8. IMs and voice calls Want to have a private conversation? Use instant messages or voice calls to talk to other users, no matter where they are in Second Life. Opening a new instant message or voice call session You can open a new IM or private voice session by right-clicking a nearby Resident and choosing IM or Call from the contextual menu. You can also start IM and voice sessions from the People tab of the sidebar by selected a Resident and pressing the IM or Call button.

14 Parts of the IM window When you receive an IM, a thumbnail portrait appears in the Notifications section of the bottom bar: Click the thumbnail to open the IM session and chat privately with that Resident. You can "tear off" this window by clicking the title bar and dragging it upward to keep it open while you perform other tasks.

16 9. Set up for voice chat Tired of typing? To use the Voice features in Second Life, you'll need to set up your microphone or headset. Just follow these simple steps and you'll be talking in no time. 1. Connect your microphone or headset via audio-in or USB 2. Open the Preferences window by choosing Me > Preferences or pressing Ctrl+P 3. Click the Sound & Media tab 4. Click the Input/Output devices button, then change the input and output devices to your preferred microphone and speakers 5. If your mic is working, you will see green bars in the input level monitor 6. Click OK 7. Click the button to the right of the chat input field to toggle your microphone on and off When you toggle your microphone on and start speaking, the voice indicator above your avatar's head should emit green waves.

17 10. Make friends Second Life is a lot more fun when you have friends to explore it with. When you meet interesting people, you can ask for permission to add them to your Friends list. Then, use the Friends list to see which friends are online, send them messages, view their profiles, and more. Nearby friends To add a nearby Resident to your Friends list, right-click the Resident's avatar and select Add Friend.

18 Friends list You can view your Friends list by clicking the People tab of the sidebar, then the My Friends tab.

19 11. Location The world of Second Life is gigantic, and getting bigger every day. If you want to visit a specific location, you can search for it on the map. You can create and save landmarks -- bookmarks that will bring you back to specific locations. Use landmarks to save time and jump straight to your favorite places! The World Map The World Map is a constantly-updated map of the entire world of Second Life. In addition to exploring new locations, you can use the map to search for events, previously stored landmarks, and online friends. Once you find a suitable destination, you can teleport there instantly or copy a SLurl to send to a friend.

20 Landmarks Landmarks are inventory items that store the coordinates of a location so you can visit it later. To create a new landmark at your current location, choose World > Landmark this place or click the star icon in the location field at the top of your screen. To return to a landmark you've created, click the Places tab of the sidebar and double-click the landmark to which you wish to return.

21 Maturity You can find the maturity rating of a location in the address field on the top bar. A location's maturity rating defines what sort of activity is acceptable in that area. For more detailed information on maturity ratings and what they mean, visit Maturity ratings: an overview. Teleport You can teleport to get from one location to another quickly. To invite a friend to your location, open your Friends list and click Teleport. SLurl You can use SLurls to teleport to new locations. A SLurl is a web-based link to a location in Second Life. If you click a SLurl with Second Life open on your computer, you can immediately teleport to that location. 12. Help There's a lot to learn in Second Life, but you're never alone. If you have questions, need advice, or don't know what to do, help is always waiting for you. Visit the Support Portal at secondlife.com/support to get help now! At the Support Portal, you can find: Knowledge Base: which contains helpful information and videos about your avatar, Linden dollars, and more. Support Tickets: If you can't find the help you need in the Knowledge Base or Viewer Help, you can submit a ticket to the Second Life Support Staff. Live Chat: Premium members have access to Live Chat support in Second Life. Billing Support: If you have a non-technical issue with you account, you can call the Billing Team toll free 24/7. 22 Viewer Help If you're confused about a control or button in the Second Life Viewer, you can press the? button found in the upper-right corner of any window or press F1 to access context-sensitive help about the window or sidebar panel you're looking at.
