1 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE MAY 2012 Inside this issue: MARK YOUR CALENDARS! TEST YOURSELF! 2 SHAW GUILD EVENTS 2012 GARDEN TOUR 3 Peter Barwell Clearly I am no good at scotching rumours. I have said goodbye to many Guild members over the last few weeks, but I am going NO- WHERE. See you this year, next year, sometime Over the past few weeks we have enrolled all Guild members in the AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) training (see p. 8). This had to be implemented very quickly and the Board decided that as most members come into contact with the patrons at sometime, we may as well try to include everyone. June 9 **** Shaw Garden Tour *** rain or shine! See page 3 for details or June 27 Guild Dress Rehearsal Come Back, Little Sheba Evening, Royal George HOSTING CAPTAINS CAVORT PHOTOS 4 5 Thank you to all those who have completed the on-line course or in-house training. While your Guild membership or hosting volunteer status does not depend on it, we wish to ensure we are in compliance with the Act. For those who found the on-line course trying or challenging, please do not worry as additional opportunities for training will be made available. 2 (Answers: 4, 1) PRESIDENT S MESSAGE, CONT D impressed. To follow My Fair Lady with Ragtime is quite some achievement. Make sure that you see as many as possible as quickly as possible. And when you have seen them, tell all your friends to go. April saw us hosting the CAVORT conference for the first time. It was a great success. Our visitors were enthralled with everything they saw. My thanks to Charmian Entine and her committee, plus the volunteers for the event for their great work, for organizing such a wonderful event showcasing all that Niagara-on-the Lake has to offer. The conference took place on the wettest few days that Spring had to offer, which reminds me that we need better weather for our upcoming Garden Tour on Saturday 9th June. Please buy a ticket and come along as we have some wonderful gardens on show this year. This is now our main fundraiser. Let's make it the best yet! And June also ushers in the Guild Dress Rehearsal, Come Back, Little Sheba. This is at the Royal George on June 27th and with Corinne Koslo playing opposite Ric Reid, this will be a night of great drama. Jackie Maxwell is the director. Miss it at your peril. TEST YOURSELF! WHO AM I? 1. Steven Sutcliffe 2. Thom Allison 3. Benedict Campbell 4. Thom Marriott 5. Ben Sanders WHICH PLAY AM I SHOWN IN HERE? 1. Misalliance 2. French Without Tears 3. Ragtime 4. A Man and Some Women 5. Present Laughter Page 2 Shaw Guild Newsletter May 2012

4 HOSTING THE HOSTING SEASON is in full swing and Hosting Captains are working their way down the Guild Hosting list from the letter M. 5 CAVORT CONFERENCE APRIL PHOTOS BY TERRY BABIJ From April 22 nd to 24 th, 2012 some 75 delegates attended the first international meeting of CAVORT Conference About Volunteers of Regional Theatre. Charmian Entine, Chair, CAVORT conference 2012 organizing committee, welcomes the visitors at a reception at Navy Hall. The conference took place at the Queen s Landing Hotel and the Shaw Festival Theatre, and brought together theatre volunteers from across North America. Large delegations from The Pasadena Playhouse, Actors Studio of Louisville, The Seattle Repertory Theatre and, of course, The Shaw Festival s Shaw Guild, attended. Well done! You and all your partners did a fabulous job with the CAVORT conference. Thanks so much! Joanne Euster, Seattle Repertory Organization Page 5 Shaw Guild Newsletter May 2012
