3 I S S U E N O On Tuesday, June 7th, 9:30am- 11:30am, the Itaewon Global Village Center will hold a Metabolic Syndrome Checkup for Foreigners in collaboration with Yongsan district Office. The session will be offered by appointment basis. Participants need to undergo fasting for 8 hours before the checkup. Metabolic Syndrome Checkup Program Qualification: Adult (20 ~ 64 years old) Requirement: Consent form (for Blood test and Blood pressure test) Checkup list: - Metabolic Syndrome checkup (Blood sugar, Blood pressure, Neutral fat, Cholesterol, Waist, In body machine) Those who need extra medical care should visit hospital by themselves with the checkup result. Any foreign residents who are older than 20 years old are welcome to attend. The session is free of charge. You can sign up in person or by only. (Only foreigners can join this program.) itaewongvc@yongsan.go.kr Itaewon Global Village is looking for volunteers as a way to serve our Korean community. Below are the volunteer opportunities available that you might be interested in: Yongsan Center for the Disabled (June 10th, 2:00pm ~ 4:00pm) This activity involves helping our friends at the center with a simple craft making exercise. The items they make are then sold to area stores and institutions, so this is a way for them to make money. In this activity, it is possible that we will not be working directly with people with disabilities, but we will only help out by making crafts with other volunteers. We can also do some outdoor activities with them if the weather permits. Young Nak Aenea s Home (June 16th, 2:00pm ~ 4:00pm) Young Nak Aena s Home houses 40 cerebral palsied children above the age of 4. We will help prepare afternoon snacks and assist them to eat. Also we will spend some time talking, singing to them, and wheeling them around. Reminders: Volunteers that have flu, hepatitis or any contagious diseases are requested not to join this program. Yongsan Senior Welfare Center (June 21st, 1:00pm ~ 2:00pm) Spend time with halmeonis and harabeojis (Korean grandmas and grandpas) by having an English conversation with them as a part of their English class. This class is one of the programs of Senior Welfare Center to help prevent Alzheimer's Disease. You do not need to be a native English speaker to join this activity, and it is a great chance for cultural exchange as well. If you wish to join any of the activities, you must download and fill out the Volunteer Sign-up Form at global.seoul.go.kr/itaewon/ (Click News & Notices then click Center Related Forms ) or contact us at kapcorteza@yongsan.go.kr ( 02) ). *** Volunteer Certificates can be issued if needed. Please be advised that Itaewon GVC does NOT provide any kind of visa sponsorship, official invitation for immigration purposes, accommodation or compensation for these volunteer activities. Please be guided accordingly. 4 4 On Friday, June 10th, 4:20pm-5:50pm, the Itaewon Global Village Center will hold an Afterschool Art Class Ruler. Participants will make their own ruler that can be used at their school and at home. In the class, they will first color various materials with the colors they like. And then, they will paste the materials on the lid of the ruler. Finally, they will close the lid and fix the ruler. Children can develop their creativity and artistic talent to make their own ruler. (The materials they will use in the class might be slightly different from this sample pictures.) Anyone whose age is between 5~13 years old can participate in this class. Parents can have free time while the class is running. (In case of a child under 6, our staff will help him/her to follow the class, so parents don t need to worry.) The participation fee for the class is 5,000won. You can sign up in person or by only. (Only foreigners can join this program.) itaewon@yongsan.go.kr On Friday, June 17th, 10:00am- 12:00pm, the Itaewon Global Village Center will hold a Seminar on Oriental therapy in Korea. In Korea, there are two kinds of medical therapy. One is the Western medical science called Yangbang, and the other one is Korean traditional way of medical science called Hanbang. Similar to other Asian therapy, it utilizes natural components to cure human body. Instead of removing or curing bad parts of body, it tries to strengthen related organs and help the body itself to overcome the disease. In line with this thinking, it uses herbal medicines from natural ingredients. Anyone who is interested in oriental therapy (but didn t know how and where to try it) can join the seminar! Participants will get fruitful information about oriental therapy, and after the seminar, there will be QnA session with the guest speaker. The guest speaker is Dr. Raimund Royer, the first foreign doctor in the field of Korean oriental therapy. The seminar is free of charge. You can sign up in person or by only. (Only foreigners can join this program.) itaewongvc@yongsan.go.kr
5 I S S U E N O On Friday, June 17th, 1:00pm- 3:00pm, the Itaewon Global Village Center will hold a Natural Soap & Aroma Candle Making Class. Participants will make a natural soap and soy aroma candle following the tutorial. Unlike Paraffin wax based candle, soy aroma candle has tender milky scent and it doesn t contain harmful impurities because this vegetable wax is extracted from soy beans. For this reason, it doesn t cause headaches, so it is safe enough to use in the house. It also has dehumidifying effect, perfect for summer season. This nature-friendly natural soap contains glycerin and vegetable oil which minimizes soap residue and skin trouble. Also, depending on the skin type of the user, any essential oil or additional materials can be added to the soap. It uses natural preservatives that are gentle enough for your skin. The participation fee for the class is 15,000 won. You can sign up in person or by only. (Only foreigners can join this program.) itaewongvc@yongsan.go.kr On Friday, June 24th, 10:00am- 12:00pm, the Itaewon Global Village Center will hold a Resin Art Class Necklace & Bracelet. Participants will make a flower necklace and a planet bracelet using resin art skill. Resin art is a handmade art to make accessories or other items using resin. Resin art allows you to decorate the accessories or other items by pasting various materials such as beads and crystal. UV resin, crystal resin, jewel resin, epoxy resin and other resins are used for resin art. In this class, you will use UV resin to make the necklace and the bracelet. You can make the accessories fast by using UV resin and drying them in the UV lamp. You can take the accessories home right after the class. Resin art allows you to use various materials according to your taste, so you will enjoy this class. The participation fee for the class is 20,000won. You can sign up in person or by only. (Only foreigners can join this program.) itaewon@yongsan.go.kr
6 6 On Friday, June 24th, 1:00pm -3:00pm, the Itaewon Global Village Center will hold a Flower Arrangement Class. Participants will learn flower arrangement that can be used in daily life. Anyone can learn it easily because there is no specific skill for this flower arrangement. You will arrange various flowers and plants in an oasis form to make a dome-shaped centerpiece. Also, you will use ribbons and wrapping paper to decorate the flower arrangement. In this way, you will complete flower arrangement that can be used as a good centerpiece or a present. You can freely make your own flower arrangement using various flowers and materials, so you will enjoy the class. The participation fee for the class is 15,000won. You can sign up in person or by only. (Only foreigners can join this program.) itaewon@yongsan.go.kr On Friday, June 24th, 4:20pm- 5:50pm, the Itaewon Global Village Center will hold a Afterschool Etiquette Class for children. "The Etiquette Factory is a unique learning experience designed to change the world, one child at a time. Because teaching manners is more than just which fork to use, The Etiquette Factory has manners' lessons from "basic etiquette" to "specific etiquette" rules such as being polite, table etiquette, integrity, proper introductions, empathy, antibullying techniques, and communication skills in order to instill leadership and social confidence in children's daily lives. The key to success of The Etiquette Factory is our fun, interactive, and motivating manners' curriculum. We use manners' games, manners' stories, manners' songs, treats, crafts, and kind discussion to help children reach their full potential" For the month of June, our focus will be on the following: Lesson: Communication Well- Mannered Communicators Game/Activity: - Telephone game - Mystery guest role playing - Opportunity for the kids to practice their creativity and imagination in preparing and presenting their own skits This is a perfect opportunity for children to take a lesson regarding manners which cannot be taught in school. The participation fee for this month s class is 5,000 won. You can sign up in person or by only. (Only foreigners can join this program.) itaewongvc@yongsan.go.kr
