2 Personal Mastery: Take Control of Your Life Overview of Personal Mastery: Being clear about what you want is foundational in personal mastery. Realizing that our progress builds when we take the very next step in front of us builds momentum. One of our most precious resources is our time, and having too much on the plate is all too common today. Using time effectively is a critical part of personal mastery. Noticing where we are making progress and celebrating that progress focuses our attention on what we want more of and that is fuel for our motivation. Understanding that we can repeat this process often, when we need a reroute in our lives, saves us hours of worry and concern. Personal Mastery: Take Control of Your Life MoxyCoaching.com! of 10 2!

3 LESSON 1: GUIDE TO GETTING CLEAR When we are healthy and functioning well, we are naturally creative and resourceful. - Carl Rogers We must know where we are in order to move to where we want to go. Without clarity, we are adrift in uncertainty. The good news is, if we are wrong, we get a do-over. We must being willing to take safe, modest risks. The big questions that we will begin to explore within the personal mastery course are: Where are you now? Where do you want to be? What is the gap? What do you want to address? What is really important? Notice I didn t say the questions we d answer in my above statement. Exploration is often more important than finding ONE solution. The four steps we will use to GET CLEAR are: 1. Writing your vision 2. Choosing and defining your values 3. Establishing short and long term goals 4. Mindset: writing affirmations These exercises will help you crystallize your thoughts about your future and see clearly where you are headed. Once you have done some exploration using the following exercises, you will fill in your own Moxy Manifesto. NOTE: If you don t need a lot of reflection or guidance and are ready to nail down your direction, you may want to jump ahead and fill out your Manifesto. 4 IMPORTANT REMINDER: Personal mastery work is much more like a mosaic, than a linear process. Don t get discouraged if it feels like it doesn t all flow. This will take effort even though the process is fairly simple. And remember the process of mastery a journey, not a destination. In this lesson you will be guided to Get Clear. I suggest you keep copies of the tools I share here so you can come back to them when life is feeling rocky and less intentional than you d like it to be. Let s start with a vision exercise to stir up your thoughts a bit. RETIREMENT PARTY REFLECTION This is your retirement party. Many people have come to extend their best wishes and express their thoughts on your leadership style and the contributions you have made during your career. 5 VISION PLANNING It s time to articulate a compelling vision of your desired future self. Your vision will identify what you want, rather than what you don t want. It is hard to see the absence of something; in contrast, it s hard to ignore and resist the presence of something. Visions are best written in the present tense, as if they are already happening, and in your voice. EXAMPLE I am strong, lean and 20 pounds lighter. I feel wonderful and have fun shopping for cute, new attractive clothes for my attractive body. I am happy, with a lot of energy to do whatever I feel like doing. My health has improved and I am open, patient and social. I wake up motivated, look great and have bountiful energy. I am happy that I am set to be around a long time for my parents and my kids. I am enjoying my new role in my career. I have a smile on my face when I go to work. I am bold and strong, patient and graceful. When I face challenges, such as getting discouraged or too busy, overwhelmed or stressed out, I pause, pray, collect myself and take doable steps to get back on track. I am eating healthy, exercising, handling stress and am a good leader. These things are important to me. Through ongoing, intentional, realistic planning, I achieve my goals and vision. Write your vision. Consider these points as you write your vision: Values (Who do I want to be?) Outcomes (What results do I want to achieve?) Behaviors (What activities do I want to do consistently?) Motivators (Why does this matter a lot to me, right now?) Strengths (What strengths, talents and abilities will I draw upon?) 7 MASTERFUL DECISION-MAKING: KNOW YOUR PERSONAL VALUES Part of getting clear is knowing what guides you. Think of your values as guiding principles. When we know our values it s easier to make decisions. It s time to get clear on your values and define them. May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears. 8 REFLECTION: GAME-CHANGER GOAL PLANNING Through goal setting, we turn visions and intentions into actions and reality. It s important to set goals that will make your life distinctly different. What would really change the game for you? Set goals that give you a good return on the time, effort and money you are investing in your growth. Sometimes people have too many goals and cannot focus, and focus is key. Other times goals are small actions (that lead to a greater goal) which are the right idea yet lack in the motivation that will propel use into transformation. This exercise helps you get clearer on your game-changing goals. If you believe you are already clear on what those are, then perhaps you do a quick review of this sheet. A) List all the possible goals you could work on. Get everything out of your head and onto paper. If you did the Wheel of Life, look at it and think about what goals would fill out your wheel and write those down. Write down as many as you can. B) Prioritize what you wrote into three categories: 1. Things you d like to get to ASAP (in the next 6 months) 2. Things you d like to achieve in one year 3. Things you d like to achieve in the next two years. C) Go back and look at what you wrote down to see what could be combined. Which goals relate? Which goals could be categorized together? D) Prioritize what goals are them most important to you and write goal statements. These will go into the Moxy Manifesto. Personal Mastery: Take Control of Your Life MoxyCoaching.com 8! of! 10

9 Keep in mind a few things: Some items you thought were goals might be indicators of progress towards a greater goal. Goals that are two years out will have milestones that you will tackle earlier so you are set up to achieve the goal two years from now. Goals are meant set a course and it is normal to make course corrections. Goals are our best guess at the time. As we make progress, we get new insight that continues to inform the direction our goals. All goals are a work-in-progress. SMART is an acronym that reminds us to set goals that will get measured, that are realistic and that are specific. Be sure to put your goals through the SMART filter. Even after years of coaching, I still like to do this to my own goals. It s great accountability to crafting goals that get accomplished.
