2 History and Heritage TALK DIGITISING SCOTTISH SLAVE OWNERSHIP IN 18TH CENTURY JAMAICA* Tuesday 23 October, pm This talk by Dr Stephen Mullen from Glasgow University will explain how the digitised Stirling of Keir Archives help tell the story of a Scottish plantation owner in Jamaica. WAR AND PEAS IN GLASGOW: DISPLAY FEEDING THE PEOPLE IN TIMES OF CONFLICT Monday 5 November Saturday 15 December Archives Searchroom, Level 5 A small display telling the stories of Glasgow s First World War allotments, showing why growing your own food was a vital part of home-front life. Display open during Archive opening hours: (Mon, Wed-Thu: 9am-5pm; Fri-Sat: 9am- 5pm & Tue: 9am-8pm) TALK TALK SPIRIT OF REVOLT ARCHIVES OF DISSENT SHOW & TELL: CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS* Monday 5 November, pm Blythswood Room Conscientious objectors claimed the right to refuse to perform military service for reasons of principle and we will look both at their experiences during the two World Wars and also the measures taken by government in response. The focus will be documents from conscientious objectors found in the Spirit of Revolt archive including material from Glasgow born Alan Burnett. GREAT SERVANTS TO CLUB AND COUNTRY QUEENS PARK FC AND THE GREAT WAR* Wednesday 7 November, pm Queen s Park Football Club undertook a three year project to create a picture of the 227 members and players who enlisted in the forces in the Great War - 34 of whom are now known to have lost their lives. Jim Hastie and Frank McCrossan will present and discuss some of the findings from the Club s 2018 report.

3 TALK BELL AND BAIN LTD: THE OLDEST EXISTING PRINTERS IN SCOTLAND* Wednesday 14 November, pm In 1831 a Mr Bell and a Mr Bain went into partnership as printers and typesetters in Bell Street, Glasgow. Little did they know that they had started a firm which is still thriving and expanding in the 21st century, 187 years later. Talk by John McGhee. COMING SOON TALK DISPLAY WOMEN S SUFFRAGE IN GLASGOW Until Friday 25 January 2019 Level 5 Foyer This small display from Special Collections marks the centenary of the electoral reforms of 1918, with a particular focus on women s suffrage in Glasgow, featuring profiles of prominent women, men and organisations. WOMEN S SUFFRAGE IN GLASGOW* Tuesday 4 December An informal afternoon with librarians, curators and researchers bringing to life the sometimes hidden stories of Women s Suffrage in Glasgow. Find out about the Glasgow and West of Scotland Association for Women s Suffrage, trade unionist and suffragette Jessie Stephen as well as the collections of Glasgow Museums and the Glasgow Women s Library. We will describe the daring protests by suffragettes in St Andrews Hall, where the library now stands. But who were the members of the Society? This talk reviews what Sir William Burrell did to further to aims of the society, and its work. To celebrate the 75th birthday of the godfather of Point Horror, RL Stine, we are hoping to give you goose bumps this Halloween! Our foyer exhibition will feature classic horror titles, we welcome back our twilight tours, have a (free) special film showing as well as a live recording of Kirsty Logan s podcast Teenage Scream.
