1 RESEARCH INTERESTS VIKASH GILJA 1540 Robinson Ave San Diego, CA T vgilja@ucsd.edu Working with a diverse set of electrophysiological and imaging methods in humans, I hope to advance the engineering science of brain machine interfaces (BMIs) through basic research and the development of clinical applications. On the basic research side, I want to probe fundamental system characteristics. Through clinical application, I aspire to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic methods. EDUCATION Stanford University, Stanford, CA MIT, Cambridge, MA Manhasset High School, Manhasset, NY Ph.D. and M.S. in Computer Science, Thesis: Towards Clinically Viable Neural Prosthetic Systems Advisor: Krishna V. Shenoy, Neural Prosthetics Systems Laboratory GPA: 4.0/4.0 M.Eng. and S.B. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, S.B. in Brain and Cognitive Sciences, GPA: 5.0/5.0 Graduated Salutatorian, ACADEMIC POSITIONS ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO, LA JOLLA, CA As a tenure track assistant professor my responsibilities include the development of a new laboratory focuses on neural engineering research and teaching both undergraduate & graduate level classes. RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, NEURAL PROSTHETICS TRANSLATIONAL LABORATORY, STANFORD UNIVERSITY, STANFORD, CA As a research associate I continue work to develop the laboratory with Prof. Jaimie Henderson, MD and Prof. Krishna Shenoy, PhD. This work includes the design, deployment, and analysis of neural prosthesis experiments with patients implanted with electrocorticography (ECoG) grids for epilepsy monitoring and with tetraplegic individuals implanted with intra-cortical microelectrode arrays as part of an FDA clinical trial (BrainGate2 IDE). Additionally, this work incorporates the development of novel user interfaces and pre-surgical fmri protocols. RESEARCH ASSISTANT, NEURAL PROSTHETICS TRANSLATIONAL LABORATORY, STANFORD UNIVERSITY, STANFORD, CA As a founding member of the laboratory, I worked with the principal investigators (Prof. Jaimie Henderson, MD and Prof. Krishna Shenoy, PhD) to design and construct the new lab. Our goal is to provide a compelling demonstration of a clinically viable neural prosthesis to enable general computer use. RESEARCH ASSISTANT, NEURAL PROSTHETIC SYSTEMS LABORATORY, STANFORD UNIVERSITY, STANFORD, CA I was involved in a variety of projects centered around the development of motor and communication prosthetics. This included, animal training, experimental design and execution, hardware, software, and algorithm design, and data analysis. Lab service has included animal care and network administration. 1 of 7
