2 PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Graduate Research Assistant,, Charlottesville, VA 2012-present Principle Investigator: Dr. Haibo Dong Developed a physics-based quasi-steady model for prediction of aerodynamic pitching torque on a flapping wing. Modeled and investigated aero-elastic behavior of a flapping wing, including its performance and actuation. Modeled and investigated open-loop dynamics of a flapping wing flier with flexible wings and showed that flexibility results in significant energy saving during aerial maneuvers. Modeled and investigated coupled dynamics of the flapping wings and the body and showed that at low flapping frequencies wing motion is strongly influenced by the body motion. We found that interactions between the wing and body motions enhance maneuverability by mitigating the need for active modulation of the wing kinematics. Investigated effect of mass distribution and deformation on the stability and agility of flight. Showed that deformable body design can enhance maneuverability/stability of the flight by adjusting effective aerodynamic derivatives and thus changing the system dynamics. Studied yaw turns of three different species of damselflies and found that they control the wing tip trajectory to adjust wing angle of attack for execution of yaw turns. Studied wing and body kinematics of cicada in a variety of flights and showed that regardless of the differences in the body motion, all these flights share a uniform control strategy. Results of this research were published and presented in several peer-reviewed journals and conferences. This research has won one national, one regional, and two local awards of excellence. Graduate Research Assistant, Wright State University, Dayton, OH Principle Investigator: Dr. Haibo Dong Investigated design of optimum flight path to minimize control effort, in low flapping frequency flight. Studied optimum body deformations to minimize energy consumption in flight. Showed that by dynamically deforming the body during aerial maneuvers, an insect can drastically reduce the average aerodynamic torque required for body reorientation. Results of this research were published and presented in several peer-reviewed conferences. Graduate Research Assistant, Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran Principle Investigator: Dr. M. B. Malaek Developed a method to manage changes in the mass distribution of a Boeing 747 during flight to maintain a desired handling quality. In this method the initial configuration of the fuel tanks as well as the strategy for consumption of the fuel during the flight was optimized to reach the desired handing quality during flight.
