6 Why conduct Microgravity Research? A candle flame in Earth's gravity (left) and microgravity (right) showing the difference in the processes of combustion in microgravity Gravity affects all physical, chemical and biological systems It cannot be completely controlled or removed on Earth 6

7 Types of Research Conducted on ISS Other U.S. Government Agencies (DoD, NIH...) U.S. Commercial Sector Non-Profit Organizations ISS International Barter Commitments (HEOMD) NASA Research: Selected to enable further space exploration: Human Research/Technology Development ISS National Laboratory: Selected for potential for Earth Benefits: Biotechnology, Commercial, and other government agencies International Research: Partners select research to support their national goals. Educational Activities: Conducted to inspire students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) 7

8 ISS Research Currently at KSC Biological Research in a Can (BRIC) Science is performed in a petri dish. Rapid turn-around flight series for flying multiple peer-reviewed science Specific PI objectives to be determined in proposals. Advanced Biological Research System (ABRS) Subrack facility payload in ISS EXPRESS Rack. Has two growth chambers; each chamber is a closed system capable of independently controlling temperature, illumination, and atmospheric composition to grow a variety of biological organisms. BRIC Canister Actuation tool for fluid treatment of specimens on orbit Petri Dish Fixation Unit ABRS Green Florescent Protein (GFP) Imaging System. Astronaut Bob Thirsk harvesting ABRS-grown Willow trees on ISS. 8

9 ISS Future Research at KSC Advanced Plant Habitat Used for multi-generational studies in which environmental variables (e.g., temperature, RH, CO2, light intensity and spectral quality) can be tracked & controlled in support of whole plant physiological testing. Vegetable Production Unit (VEGGIE) Test bed for plant development & plant surface micro flora investigations. Catalog food microbial safety a cross planting cycles within same growth area. Produce fresh vegetables for diet variety and offer a source of recreation/aesthetics for crew. Plant chamber with glove ports installed. 9
