4 From The Chair John Tierney March is ap proach ing as I am writ ing this piece and the op - er a tive word for the Phil a del - phia Sec tion is busy. I would like to be gin by re - port ing on the Jan u ary meet - ing that was held at the Iron Hill Brew ery in West Ches ter. A very lively pre sen ta tion and tour was given by our host, and speaker, Larry Horwitz. Larry is the brewmaster at the West Ches ter lo ca tion. The event at tracted a re spect able au di ence (as in num bers) with a size able con tin gent of at ten - dees who were non-us born; the coun tries rep re sented were China, Ger many, Eng land and Ire land. In ter est ingly, one mem ber from Bucks County re ar ranged a doc tor s ap point - ment in the West Ches ter area just so that he could at tend the meeting. Feb ru ary 1 st saw the world kick off of the In ter na tional Year of Chem is try cel e bra - tion. The site for the fes tiv i - ties in the US was at the Chem i cal Her i tage Foun da tion (CHF), in Phil a del phia. CHF kindly hosted a din ner on Jan - u ary 31, at which Tom Tritton (CHF Pres i dent) wel comed the as sem bled chem is try com - mu nity and in tro duced An - drew Liveris, Pres i dent, CEO and Chair man of the Board of the Dow Chem i cal Com pany. An drew s ma jor point is that we should all be sing ing the praises of chem is try be cause we have the world stage. He fur ther added that we should en sure that we do not blow it by not tak ing ad van tage of this op por tu nity. On Feb ru ary 1 st CHF hosted a panel dis cus - sion en ti tled Global Chal - lenges/chem is try So lu tions, mod er ated by Dan iel G. Nocera, the Henry Dreyfus Pro fes sor of En ergy and Pro fes sor of Chem is try at the Mas sa chu setts In sti tute of Tech nol ogy. The pan el ists were El len Kullman (CEO, DuPont), An drew Liveris (CEO, Dow), Joshua Boger (CEO, Ver tex Pharmaceuticals), Rita Colwell (Pro- fes sor, Uni ver sity of Mary - land) and Janet Hering (Di rec tor, Swiss Fed eral In - sti tute of Aquatic Sci ence and Tech nol ogy). A lively dis cus sion en sued af ter each pan el ist gave their ini tial re - marks. Ques tions were en ter - tained by the pan el ists from the au di ence and the web; Dan iel Nocera was a pro voc a - tive and en ter tain ing me di a tor. The Sec tion par tic i pated in an ACS out reach pro gram at the Frank lin In sti tute on Feb ru - ary 5 th. It was a fun event. The event con sisted of 18 ta - bles fea tur ing 9 hands-on ac - tiv i ties - Flubber, Mak ing Snow, Col or ful Lather Print - ing, Den sity Ba tons, New Sense about Cents, Pen cil Elec trol y sis, Pro duc ing Ox y - gen Gas, X Marks the Spot, and Magic Nuudles. The Phil - a del phia Sec tion no ta bles work ing the ta bles in cluded Dan King (Drexel) and Rick Ew ing (Chair-Elect). Doug Hausner did an amaz ing job ral ly ing the troops through the Younger Chem ists Com mit - tee (YCC). Doug mo bi lized a con tin gent of un der grad u ate chem is try and chem i cal en gi - neer vol un teers from the Uni - ver sity of the Sci ences, Drexel, Penn and the Uni ver - sity of Del a ware to work each of the dem on stra tion ta bles. There was a won der ful turn - out of chil dren and par ents who par tic i pated in the handson ac tiv i ties and they clearly had a great time. As I was leav ing the Frank lin In sti - tute, one par ent with her two young chil dren turned to me and said that chem is try event was awe some! I am aware that awe some is pos si bly an overused word, but in this instance I think she hit the nail on the head. See page 70 for a photo from the event. At our Feb ru ary meet ing, un - der grad u ate and grad u ate stu - dents pre sented their re search at the An nual Poster Ses sion, held at Temple Uni ver sity s Mit ten Hall. Dow helped spon sor the event in con junc - March 2011 Page 48

In ad di tion to the un der grad u ate and grad u ate poster pre sen ta - tions, four high school se niors (Remy Bremner, Jennifer Cas - tor, Ryan Henrici and Samantha Web ster) from Con - es toga High School (Ches ter County) pre sented ex cel lent re search work that they had car ried out at their school with their teacher, Mr. Der rick Wood. There were 28 grad u - ate stu dent post ers and 18 un - der grad u ate post ers. The win ning grad u ate post ers were sub mit ted by Ja cob Goldberg and Solongo Batjargal (Penn), Thuy Hien Nguyen (USP) and Tina Shah (Villanova). The win ning un der grad u ate post - ers were Lena Hoober (Prince ton), Tara Schisler (East ern) and Justine Betzu (Ursinus). The awards were pre sented by Dr. Katie Hunt of Dow. The judges for the event were José Cerda (St. Jo seph s), Ann DeMasi (Chemtura), Rick Ew ing (Bris tol Meyers Squibb), Al Findeisen (Tem - ple), Rob ert Giuliano (Villanova), Chandra Har - ring ton (Merck), Dan King (Drexel), Kathryn Lysko (Immaculata), Pe ter Palenchar (Rutgers, Cam den), Jen Palenchar (Rutgers, Cam - den), Jeffrey Pelletier (North - west ern), Jared Paul (Villanova), Heather Paul (Villanova), and Bill Smith (Bris tol HS). The Section cer tainly ap - pre ci ates the afore men tioned in di vid u als giv ing their time for this event. Please take some time to go to the website and re view all the ab stracts for this event, so you will gain some sense of all the work these stu dents and their fac - ulty advisors are involved in. See you all at the Ed gar Fahs Smith Lec ture in March. NEWS AT OMS Deaths Edmund Thelen, re tired re - search and de vel op ment ex ec - u tive, De cem ber 18 th at 97. 20 Scientists Needed to Make Philadelphia Area Girls Enjoying Science a Success On Saturday, April 9 th the spring 2011 session of Philadelphia Areas Girls Enjoying Science (PAGES ) will be held at Chestnut Hill College. Volunteers are needed to conduct experiments with the sixth grade girls. Share your passion for science by bringing your favorite experiment to inspire small groups of girls. The day is a great opportunity to network in the labs and at lunch with other local women interested in science. If you have never conducted experiments with children and are unsure of how to best do this, you can be paired with a program veteran to learn the ropes. Learn more about to PAGES by visiting our web site at Please contact Kathy Thrush Shaginaw at or katt@verizon.net to volunteer. turning the page to a bright chapter in the future of our girls.
