3 From The Chair Judith Summers-Gates June is al ways jam packed with oc ca sions and mile - stones. And this June is no dif fer ent! We will be cel e - brat ing the launch of new grad u ates and the ac com - plish ments of a pro fes sional life time with our 50-Year Mem bers and I would like to ex tend our heart i est con grat u - la tions to both groups!! Cur - rent ACS Pres i dent, Dr. Jo seph S. Fran cisco, will be pre sent ing cer tif i cates to our 50-Year Mem bers to mark their mile stone. Mo ments like these make me con scious of the pas sage of time. I would like to ask some of our 50-Year Mem - bers what they en vi sioned the fu ture to look like and what con tri bu tions they wanted to make in their ca reers and see how many of their am bi tions are re al ized in the out - comes I could pose the same ques tions to our fledg - ling mem bers. How about mak ing some pre dic tions for me? It could be come a new Phil a del phia Sec tion tra di tion re cord ing the pre dic tions and then open ing the time cap sule to re visit them when the Class of 2010 reaches its 50 th an ni ver sary in It is al ways amaz ing, to me, how sci ence fic tion can be - come sci ence re al ity and how in spi ra tion and in no va tion can lead to things that change our way of life. We owe a lot to our ed u ca tors who un self - ishly give that in spi ra tion and en cour age ment to their stu - dents ev ery day and we were proud to rec og nize such an ed u ca tor last month in Dr. Sally Mallory, our Un der - grad u ate Teach ing Award win ner! Teach ing is hard work that too of ten goes un - ac knowl edged and un derap - pre ci ated in our so ci ety where sports fig ures com - mand stag ger ing sal a ries dur - ing their lim ited ca reers. Re search sci en tists may not set re cords but they do leave last ing leg a cies to all of us. Thomas Ed i son said that most ac com plish ments are the re sult of a lot of hard work but I have to ad mit that it would be cool to see more sci ence fic tion turned into sci ence re al ity. Just like the new el e ment Tony Stark hap pened to whip up in the new Iron Man 2 movie! Makes me want to head down to the base ment and start tin - ker ing myself! I want to have a front row seat for all the life chang ing dis cov er ies to come be - cause at heart, I am al ways go ing to be a sci en tific thrill seeker! Have a Happy/Safe Sum mer and come back re-en er gized and ready to tackle our new ac tiv i ties in Sep tem ber! Interested in Working for ACS? We are draw ing up the slate of can di dates for the fall 2010 elec tion. Spe cif i cally, there are open ings for chair-elect, trea surer, di rec - tors, and coun cil ors. The chair-elect has sev eral re - spon si bil i ties, in clud ing chair ing the Section awards and pro gram com mit tees dur - ing the first year of the term and run ning the Section dur - ing the sec ond year. The trea surer is re spon si ble for pay ing bills and main tain ing fi nan cial re cords. Di rec tors form the gov er nance of the Lo cal Sec tion and meet monthly Sep tem ber-june. Coun cil ors rep re sent the Section at ACS na tional meetings. If you would like to run, please get in touch with Bob Gates (gatesr@att.net) or Libby Harper (PhilaACS@ aol.com or (215) ). Francisco Pres i dent, ACS Cel e brat ing Golden Op por tu - ni ties, Cre at ing a Bound less Fu ture Ab stract: The chem i cal en - ter prise in the United States has grown enor mously over the past 50 years, and it con - tin ues to grow. This growth is in no small part due to myr iad con tri bu tions of ded i cated chem i cal pro fes sion als, in - clud ing those rec og nized as long-stand ing mem bers of the Amer i can Chem i cal So ci ety. This talk will high light ad - vance ments in US chem is try in the con text of those who helped to make it hap pen, and the com mit ment of ACS mem bers to en sure that their or ga ni za tion is dy namic and re spon sive to the needs of the chemical enterprise. 6 HON OR ING OUR 50-YEAR MEMBERS At our June Sec tion meet ing, we honor our 50-year mem bers, pre sent ing them with a cer tif i cate and lun cheon at the Mc Call Meet ing and Con fer ence Cen ter in rec og ni tion of their long and faith ful ser vice to the So ci ety. Those be ing hon ored in clude the fol low ing: DR. WIL LIAM H. BRENDLEY, JR. Dr. Brendley at tended Saint Jo - seph s Uni - ver sity on an ac a demic schol ar ship where he ma jored in chem is try and let - tered as a sec ond base man on the var sity base ball team. Bill pur sued his Mas ter s de gree in Radiochemistry at Saint Joe s and his PhD in Phys i cal Chem is try from the Uni ver - sity of Penn syl va nia in Bill s pro fes sional in dus trial ca reer of 33 years was with Rohm and Haas where he held in creas ing man a ge rial re - spon si bil i ties first in re search (De part ment Man ager) and in busi ness (Busi ness Di rec tor of Spe cialty Purifications). Bill lec tured at var i ous uni ver si - ties and ACS Section meet - ings on poly meric coat ings and was also a re cip i ent of the Roon Award for his re search on aque ous coil coat ings. Upon re tire ment from Rohm and Haas, Bill pur sued his pas sion for teach ing and re - search at Phil a del phia Uni ver - sity where he taught, pur sued re search, and be came Dean of the School of Sci ence and Health for five years, re tir ing as Dean Emer i tus. Dur ing his in dus trial and ac a - demic ca reers, he pub lished peer-re viewed pa pers in a va - ri ety of re search in ter ests in 5 de cades and has 18 pat ents. He con tin ued his learn ing in - ter ests with Mas ter s and Doc tor ate de grees in The ol - ogy from Trin ity Theo log i cal Sem i nary and is now an or - dained min is ter in the Prim i - tive Meth od ist De nom i na tion and also Pres i dent of their School of The ol ogy. Pres ently, he spends his free time tu tor ing chem is try, mod - er at ing the Sci ence Club, and coach ing the fresh man bas ket - ball team at Gwynedd Mercy Acad emy High School. He and his wife, Yvonne, have been mar ried for 43 years, have two chil dren and five grand chil dren, and con - tinue to re side in Hatboro. DR. JAMES D. BURKE Well-de - served con - grat u la tions to our an ni - ver sary col - leagues for their ca reers, their con tri - bu tions to so - ci ety, and their years of mem ber ship and ser vice in ACS! Rather than re flect on my ca - reer, I want to rec og nize those who helped me on the way. I am in debt to more peo ple than I can enu mer ate, but some in par tic u lar stand out. My par ents gave me my first chem is try set. The oc ca sion - ally dis tress ing odors em a nat - ing from our base ment must have made them ques tion their judg ment, but they never objected. Bill Kehl, my Chem is try teacher at Up per Darby H.S., deep ened my in ter est. With - out the en cour age ment of Fred er ick Rossini, an em i nent chem ist and fa ther of a col - lege class mate, I never would have ap plied to Berke ley, where I re ceived my PhD. 7 My grad u ate ad vi sor Jim Cason and my post doc toral ad vi sor at Co lum bia, Gilbert Stork, made my ca reer pos si ble. I started at Rohm and Haas as a re search chem ist and re tired as man ager of tech ni cal re - cruit ing and uni ver sity re la - tions for our US sites quite an in ter est ing ca reer. It would not have hap pened with out the strong sup port, from the be gin ning, of peo ple like Ellington Bea vers, Pat McNulty, Bob Ross and Fred Wil son, among oth ers. Later, thanks to the firm com mit - ment of our tech ni cal man ag - ers and the gen er ous work of our vol un teer re cruit ers (all en gi neers and sci en tists), our re cruit ing pro grams be came na tion ally re spected for qual - ity, in teg rity and suc cess. The Phil a del phia Sec tion has been a warm and col le gial or - ga ni za tion for me. I joined in 1966 and chaired it in I learned a lot from Glenn and Barbara Ullyot and Mad eleine Joullié, and en joyed work ing with our Sec tion s ca pa ble ad - min is tra tive man ag ers, Shir - ley Golden and her suc ces sor Libby Harper. As an ACS Coun cilor in the 1990s, I bene fited from Newman Bortnick s coun sel. Later, as an ACS Board mem ber, Paul An der son and Hank Whalen were quite help ful to me. As Board Chair, I was for tu nate to work with a tal ented, ded i - cated, de light ful team. The chem i cal sci ences are in deed a so cial en ter prise, and we owe our suc cess to many. I am grate ful to God for the many op por tu ni ties to con trib - ute. I must also thank my wife Barbara for her re mark - able pa tience and tol er ance, al though she some times won - dered whether ACS was the ini tials of The Other Woman. Since re tir ing, I en joy de vot - ing more time to her and our fam ily, and com ing to terms with that pregnant job jar. DR. FREDERICK W. CAMP Fred er ick W. Camp is a chem i cal en gi - neer ing grad u - ate of Columbia and Prince - ton. He joined the R&D De - part ment of Sun Com pany in Dur ing , he helped de velop Sun s pi o neer - ing Athabasca Tar Sands ex - trac tion pro cess, on field as sign ment in north ern Al - berta, Can ada. In 1985, he con ducted a tech nol ogy au dit of Suncor s oil sands ex trac - tion plant. His recommendations were im ple - mented, and plant op er a tions sig nif i cantly im proved. In 1991, Dr. Camp was awarded the Karl A. Clark Dis tin - guished Ser vice Award given oc ca sion ally by the Al berta Oil Sands Tech nol ogy and Re search Ad min is tra tion for out stand ing ser vice in com - mer cial iza tion of oil sands. Fol low ing the first oil price shock in 1973, he led a group which sup ported Sun s par tic - i pa tion in do mes tic synfuels de vel op ment pro jects in clud - ing the $80MM White River Shale Pro ject. He planned, started, and man aged a coal re search lab in sup port of Sun s Cordero Mine. The lab pro duced a coal an a lyt i cal meth ods hand book which be - came the stan dard for the Pow der River Ba sin, sup ple - ment ing ASTM meth ods for sub-bi tu mi nous coal. As the synfuels boom ended, Dr. Camp joined Sun s cor po - rate tech nol ogy staff, de fin ing the role of tech nol ogy in sup - port of Sun s stra te gic busi - ness di rec tions. He re tired in 1991, and par tic i pated in found ing Hy dro car bon En gi - neer ing As so ci ates, an en gi - neer ing consulting firm. June 2010 Page 98

8 DR. EU GENE C. CAPALDI Gene Capaldi re ceived his BA from the Uni ver sity of Penn - syl va nia in He went to the Uni ver sity of Del a ware and did his grad u ate work un - der Dr. James A. Moore re - ceiv ing an MS in 1961 and a PhD in While at Del a - ware he met his wife of 47 years, Car o lyn Ann Bart lett. They have two sons and five grand chil dren. He went to work in Sep tem - ber 1963 for At lan tic Re fin - ing, which later be came Arco Chem i cal Com pany. His re - search work in cluded the syn - thetic routes to adamantane and its de riv a tives, poly isophthalate es ters, hydroxy polybutadienes and tech ni cal ser vice for the Oxirane Com pany. In ad di tion to his re search work, he man aged Arco s Tox i col ogy Group in In 1986 Gene be came the Man ager of En vi ron men tal, Health and Safety. 9 DR. IVAN E. LEIGH Dr. Leigh grad u ated from James Mad i son High School in Brook lyn, NY. He re - ceived a Pu - lit zer Free Schol ar ship to Co lum bia Uni ver sity, Class of Then it was off to the Uni ver sity of Cal i for nia at Da vis, where he re ceived a PhD in Chem is try in Af ter a post-doc at Kan sas Uni ver sity, Dr. Leigh be gan his pro fes sional ca reer teach - ing at Villanova Uni ver sity, where he met and mar ried Hilde Wag ner. In 1966 the Leigh fam ily moved to Corn ing, NY, where Dr. Leigh su per vised an an a - lyt i cal group in glass chem is - try. In 1975 the Leighs were back in southeastern PA, where Dr. Leigh man aged au - to mo tive cat a lyst and re search groups at Matthey Bishop. Up per man age ment and na - tional eco nomic up heav als in 1983 re sulted in Dr. Leigh s tem po rary re turn to ac a de mia at U. Pitt-Johnstown. In 1985, with that re ces sion over, Dr. Leigh took a po si tion, again in glass anal y sis, with the CertainTeed Corp. (Blue Bell, PA), from which he re tired in Dr. Leigh vol un teers at the Hag ley Mu seum in Wilmington, and for many years DJ d a clas si cal mu sic pro gram on the West Ches ter University sta tion. He also meets for lunch bi-monthly with his for - mer col leagues from Villanova and Matthey Bishop, and an nu ally with his friends at Cer tain Teed at their hol i - day party. DR. MARINUS LOS Al though born in the Neth er lands, I re ceived my for mal ed u - ca tion in Brit ain; high school at a school founded in 700 in York shire and col lege at Ed in - burgh Uni ver sity in Scot land where I grad u ated with a 1 st Class Hon ours BSc in chem is - try and a PhD in or ganic chem is try. I con tin ued my ed - u ca tion with a two-year Post - doc toral Fel low ship at the Na tional Re search Coun cil in Ot tawa, Can ada work ing on the struc ture of a nat u ral prod - uct. For me, this was an ex - hil a rat ing time do ing struc ture de ter mi na tion as op posed to syn the sis, the sub ject of my PhD the sis. Apart from one year (1970) spent as a Se nior Re search Fel low in the Phar ma col ogy De part ment at Ed in burgh Uni ver sity work ing on prostaglandins, I worked for 35 years at the now non-ex istent Amer i can Cy an a mid Com - pany in their Ag ri cul tural Di - vi sion. Those were won der ful years in a vi brant or ga ni za - tion. I should add that suc cess cer tainly helped to make it so!! This suc cess was the dis - cov ery of the imidazolinone her bi cides, a new po tent class which in hib ited an en zyme in - volved in the biosynthesis of valine and isoleucine. It was this dis cov ery that brought me a num ber of awards: In ven tor of 1990 (In tel lec tual Prop erty Own ers), Achieve ment Award (In dus trial Re search In sti tute) 1994 and sev eral ACS Awards (Perkin Medal 1994, Cre ative In ven tion 1995 and Heroes of Chem is try, 1999). But the most mem o ra ble of all the awards was the Na tional Medal of Tech nol ogy pre - sented in 1993 by Pres i dent Clinton in a won der ful cer e - mony held in the Rose Gar den at the White House in front of my whole fam ily. What a thrill. My ca reer took a sharp change in di rec tion in 1984 when I was of fered a po si tion in Plant Sci ence Dis cov ery, a bi ol ogy group. This re sulted in many chal lenges. At re tire - ment in 1996 my po si tion was that of Di rec tor, Plant Sci - June 2010 Page 100

10 ences. This was a great ex pe - ri ence al low ing me to ob serve the per for mance of po ten tial prod ucts dis cov ered in the green house at re search sites around the world. It was a great ride, a won der ful ca reer. Re tire ment al lowed me to vol - un teer for Hab i tat and AARP s TaxAide. My wife and I later moved into a re tire - ment com mu nity where op - por tu ni ties abound through many clubs for ser vice, ed u - ca tion, sports and en tertainment. DR. EDYTH L. MALIN I fell in love with chem is try in high school and my fas ci na - tion has con tin ued al most ev - ery day since then. I ma jored in chem is try at Vanderbilt where I was also ac tive in stu - dent pub li ca tions. Worked briefly at the lo cal health de - part ment in Chat ta nooga, TN af ter I mar ried. We moved to the DC area, where I was an Ed i to rial As sis tant on Chem i - cal and En gi neer ing News and then a manusrcipt ed i tor for ACS ap plied pub li ca tions. Work on ACS pub li ca tions and at FASEB con tin ued part-time while I was rais ing my three sons. In 1967 I en - rolled at Amer i can Uni ver sity and re ceived an MS in 1969, just as we moved to Phil a del - phia. Af ter one year at Tem - ple, I trans ferred to Bryn Mawr Col lege and re ceived my PhD in Af ter a post-doc toral fel low ship in Wal ter Eng lander s lab at Penn , I went to USDA s East ern Re gional Re - search Cen ter (ERRC) as an NSF Post doc toral Re search As so ci ate and then as a per - ma nent em ployee for 27 years. I re tired July 1, 2003 but still main tain my con nec - tion there. My re search dealt with pro tein struc ture, first on beta-lactoglobulin and then ni trite mod i fi ca tion of lysine in food pro teins, in ac ti va tion of al ka line phosphatase in milk and cream, and mo lec u - lar mod el ing of ca sein pep - tides that oc cur dur ing cheesemaking. Con cur rently, I also headed a team that de - vel oped low-fat moz za rella cheese for school-lunch pizza for USDA s Na tional School Lunch Pro gram. Two ma jor man u fac tur ers make the cheese, and schools all over the US still use it on pizza. WIL LIAM W. MARSH, JR. Af ter re ceiv - ing a BA in Chem is try from La fay - ette Col lege in 1959, I took some grad u ate chem is try courses at the Uni - ver sity of Del a ware and then worked in R&D as a bench chem ist for Wyeth Lab o ra to - ries in Radnor, PA where I had spent four sum mers dur - ing my un der grad u ate years. While there I took chem is try courses at Villanova Uni ver - sity which con tin ued when I moved to R&D at Sun Oil Co. in Marcus Hook, PA where I re mained from I then be came Over seas Co or - di na tor of An a lyt i cal De vel - op ment for E.R. Squibb & Sons, Inc., in Lawrenceville, NJ, un til a com pany re or ga ni - za tion elim i nated the po si tion. A se ries of sales po si tions fol - lowed, and I served as re - gional sales man ager for Antek In stru ments, Inc. and then O.I. An a lyt i cal, two Texas-based com pa nies in the lab in stru ment field. Later, I sold en vi ron men tal ser vices for the Oc cu pa tional Health Ser vices group within The Hart ford Steam Boiler In spec - tion and In sur ance Co. and then lab o ra tory disposables for Qual ity En vi ron men tal Con tain ers. Dur ing my time with HSB, I took a spe cial ized course in In dus trial Hy giene at Geor gia Tech. Dur ing my en tire life I have been in volved with mu sic in some way as a cho ral singer in churches, high school and col lege and in two of the ma - jor Phil a del phia cho ruses: the Mendelsson Club and The Cho ral Arts So ci ety. I also June 2010 Page 101

In 1976 I founded the Phil a del phia Branch of the Delius So ci ety ded i cated to the mu sic of this Eng lish com poser ( ) and his con tem po rar ies. The So - ci ety is still very ac tive and pres ents sev eral pub lic con - certs and other events an nu - ally. Since the 1970s I have also been ac tive as a mu sic jour nal ist pro vid ing re cord re - views and ar ti cles for sev eral pub li ca tions. These mu si cal ac tiv i ties (ex cept for sing ing these days) and oc ca sional work as an As so ci ate Pro - ducer for the Di rect-to-tape Re cord ing Co. keep me busy in re tire ment. DR. EU GENE (GENE) F. McINERNEY. A na tive of New York City, Gene re - ceived his BS from Fordham Uni ver sity and his PhD in organo-me tal - lic chem is try from St. John s Uni ver sity. Trained as a syn thetic or ganic chem ist, he transitioned to prod uct and com mer cial de - vel op ment ac tiv i ties first within GAF Ma te ri als Co. (now In ter na tional Spe cialty Prod ucts Inc.) and later at Her cu les Inc. (now Ashland Chem i cal Co.). Dur ing this chap ter of his ca reer he was in stru men tal in the de sign and in tro duc tion of spe cialty chem i cals, ma te ri als, and ser - vices used in the man u fac ture of semi con duc tor de vices and aero space sys tems. He also par tic i pated in nu mer ous cor - po rate li cens ing and M&A ini tia tives. With the con trac tion of the chem i cal in dus try in the early 1990s, he ini tially opened a bou tique con sul tancy (Elec - tronic Ma te ri als and Chem i - cals In ter na tional) prior to establishing a second career in the field of eco nomic de vel - op ment. As sum ing the role of tech nol ogy com mer cial iza tion man ager at Ben Frank lin Tech nol ogy Part ners of South east Penn syl va nia, he mentored emerg ing biopharma, in for ma tion tech nol - ogy, and man u fac tur ing com - pa nies while pro vid ing them access to investment capital as well as entrée to a net work of uni ver sity tech nol ogy con sult - ing re sources. Build ing upon that ex pe ri - ence, he went on to es tab lish EMCI Con sult ing As so ci ates where he cur rently of fers busi ness de vel op ment and tech nol ogy as sess ment ser - vices to early stage com pa - nies, uni ver si ties, and other not-for profit or ga ni za tions in the greater Phil a del phia area.
