3 From The Chair Judith Summers-Gates Pass ing the Ba ton. Greet ings! The cal en dar page has changed and sud - denly, we re in 2010! If you are any thing like me, this still sounds like a fu tur - is tic date to you and it is some what daunt ing to think that we are ac tu ally en ter ing the fu ture that we al ways talked and spec u lated about. Sci ence fic tion is be com ing sci ence fact ev ery day. We don t have those fly ing cars or trans port ers yet, but we do have tech no log i cal, med i cal and en vi ron men tal prob lems that need to be solved by the best and bright - est minds that can be mus - tered and, in many cases, CHEM ISTS and the peo ple who use chem is try will be on the front lines work ing to solve the prob lems that are con front ing our blue mar - ble in space and all of the spe cies who call it home. When I ran for of fice, I said that I wanted to be the busi - est Chair ever and I still feel that way now that the votes have been counted. But in or der for this year to go off as planned, I will need some ma jor in vest ment and in - volve ment from YOU our Sec tion mem ber ship. Quite frankly, I ve been get ting a bit wor ried about the level of par tic i pa tion (or lack of it) at our meet ings and ac tiv i ties in the past few years. We are a very large and di verse Sec - tion one of the larg est in the coun try yet it seems that we are al ways plead ing for vol - un teers for our ac tiv i ties and can di dates for our of fices. So I am go ing to start nudg - ing you on a reg u lar ba sis to change all that. WHY did you join the lo cal Sec tion? WHAT are YOUR pri or i ties? WHAT are YOUR needs and are they be ing MET? WHAT are YOUR con cerns? WHAT should/ could we be do ing dif fer ently to get you ex cited about com ing to our monthly meet ings and roll ing up your sleeves when we have an ac - tiv ity like Chem ists Cel e brate Earth Day or Na tional Chem - is try Week or Chem Olym - piad or our own lo cal P.A.G.E.S. or Chem Demos? SPEAK YOUR MIND! I am go ing to put out a for mal sur - vey as soon as the lo gis tics can be worked out seek ing all that in put and more. I will also be shar ing some de mo - graphic data on the Sec tion so that ev ery one will have a good snap shot of the peo ple we are sup posed to rep re sent and serve. The Board of Di rec tors is work ing hard to get our new bud get in place for the com - ing year and we are go ing to have to look hard at our pri - or i ties and make some tough choices and de ci sions as we work our way through that pro cess. It should come as no sur prise, but the Sec tion has - n t had as much rev e nue com - ing in this year as in prior years due to the eco nomic down turn that we ve all ex pe - ri enced. The Board of Di rec - tors is go ing to en gage in a for mal stra te gic plan ning ef - fort to ad dress that sit u a tion and other po ten tial items and we will make that ef fort as trans par ent to you as pos si ble. If each of us do nates just ONE HOUR of our pre cious time and en ergy to our Sec - tion in 2010, that will be more than 5000 hours go ing to ward the goals and mem - ber ship and over all health of our Sec tion. In this year of the Cen sus, can I count on you to STAND UP and SHOW UP when it mat ters most?? I hope so!! Judy January 2010 Page 3
