AP Lit & Comp 11/9 11/ Frankenstein chapters Debrief essays (G3 we will do this Mon) 3. You ll need to read chapters by Tues 11/15 -- Weds Have poetry work ready to go by next class.

Frankenstein chapters 7-12 Go back through your assigned chapter of Frankenstein. Your task is twofold. 1. Come up with five solid questions which you will use to lead discussion with the class. Make these questions as text specific as possible and employ appropriate levels of critical thinking. Some clarification is fine, but your focus is to get the class to look at your section in depth, from multiple angles, etc. 2. After leading discussion, you will then teach the class by highlighting specific literary elements/techniques in use. PUT THIS PART IN THE DOC on Classroom. Find two strong similes, an example of Gothicism, an example of Romanticism Discuss characterization of the characters in your chapter only. Note any obvious irony or foreshadowing that occurs. Choose at least two of this unit s thematic questions and answer them specifically for this section of Frankenstein. You can also mention other pieces we ve read. Choose three significant pieces of dialogue or description from your chapter and explain why you chose them. Please type these into the shared Doc, too.

BNW prompt Most plays and novels use contrasting places (for example, two countries, two cities or towns, two houses, or the land and the sea to represent opposed forces or ideas that are central to the meaning of the work. Choose a novel or play that contrasts two such places. Write an essay explaining how the places differ, what each place represents, and how their contrast contributes to the meaning of the work. To completely address this prompt, you need to: 1. Write a thesis which states what you ll be proving. 2. Describe the London society and what it represents 3. Describe the Savage reservation and what it represents 4. Discuss how they contrast from each other. 5. Discuss how Huxley uses this contrast to support the novel s theme. You don t need to discuss the theme in tons of detail; however, you must explicitly state the theme and show how the contrasting settings help make it stronger.

Some things to keep in mind Address the whole prompt. Stay focused. Be specific. Use as much specific support as possible to PROVE what you re writing. Be organized. If your writing strays off task or is poorly organized, you will be docked points, and more importantly, the reader may give up before he/she can find your main point. Do NOT editorialize. Stick with analyzing HOW the author creates meaning. This is your chance to showcase your writing. Add word choice variety. Sprinkle in a few bigger words. Vary the style and length of your sentences. You want to come across as a strong writer. Punctuate book titles correctly. UNDERLINE. Do not use the author s name or the characters names unless you are POSITIVE you know the correct names and can spell them correctly.

For a first timed writing These were actually pretty decent. Across both sections, there was one 9, several 8 s, which is excellent, and some 7 s. The average score was a 6-, which is pretty good for the first time around. Those are not bad for an initial timed writing. The problem I saw most frequently was not addressing the theme or not clearly showing how the contrasting settings helped to support the theme. Theme is key to question 3. Some of you also did not write enough. You had a good start but needed to keep going. Do NOT use personal pronouns The other common issue was not addressing all parts of the prompt. Some of you did not successfully describe the contrasts between the two settings OR did not correctly describe what each setting was intended to represent

Here s a few strong thesis statements: In the novel Brave New World, Aldous Huxley creates a futuristic society with little individuality, highlighting the tension between a controlled, stable World State, and the technology-deprived reservation, ultimately revealing how society forms an individual and how individuality contributes to the stability of a society. The stable World State created by Huxley is one without individuality and driven by industrialization: In the contrasting world of the reservation, there is little, if any, technology and no escape from one s problems and worries. The two societies show the extremes of civilization. John s visit to the World state demonstrates to the reader how unacceptable life without thought meaningful emotion would be, ultimately stripping us of our individual identity.

8 Here s a few strong thesis statements: In the science fiction novel Brave new World, Aldous Huxley examines human technological advancement highlighting the tension between mechanized processes and natural, human processes, ultimately revealing that scientific advancement is no more important than moral and creative developments. This essay followed with 1. A paragraph specifically contrasting and describing the two settings 2. A paragraph focusing on how Huxley uses these settings symbolically. 3. A paragraph discussing HOW Huxley uses the two settings to demonstrate his them that moral and creative development are just as important as scientific advancement.

Here s a few strong thesis statements: Technology, while often hailed as the best part of modern society, is not always as benevolent as it may seem. Sometimes it represents the death of society and humanity as it is currently known. In the novel Brave New World, Aldous Huxley examines the results of the unchecked advance of technology in society, highlighting the tension between humanity s inherent values and tendencies shown in society itself, ultimately revealing that humanity and all it represents today cannot coexist with pure, unadulterated technological progress.

M1: For next class Begin reading chapters which will be due next Tues 11/15 Weds 11/16. Read, annotate, and analyze the poems on our class site so you re ready to work with them for next class. Make sure you re set to teach your chapter for Frankenstein next class, have them
