1 Name: Date: Advanced English Period: #: *Section: WRITING! ROCK TOUR ESSAY ROUGH DRAFT PACKET Write a five paragraph, informational essay that tells the teacher about your rock tour! This is your tour. Be creative! TOPIC: Why should people come see your band s performance? Convince them with three reasons to see it! Each paragraph must be at least FIVE sentences! You will have an introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs and one concluding paragraph. DO NOT USE FIRST PERSON and DO NOT TALK TO THE READER! (No: me, I, you, we, our, my, etc.) MAIN IDEA DIRECTIONS: Write a main idea statement for your essay. (one sentence!) POINTS TO COVER IN ESSAY DIRECTIONS: What three main points do you want to make in your essay? (Why should people come see your band s performance? Convince them to see it!) Write ONE complete sentence for each point. Then, write details/examples you ll use to support that point (doesn t have to be in complete sentences). Ideas include: explain who is in the band, explain what happens at the concert, explain why it s an awesome show, etc. Point 1: (complete sentence) Ideas for what details/examples you ll use to explain Point 1: (don t need to be in complete sentences) 1

2 Point 2: (complete sentence) Ideas for what details/examples you ll use to explain Point 2: (don t need to be in complete sentences) Point 3: (complete sentence) Ideas for what details/examples you ll use to explain Point 3: (don t need to be in complete sentences) THESIS STATEMENT Use your three points to create your thesis statement. Main Idea + Point 1 + Point 2 + Point 3 = your thesis Don t be too wordy! Give the reader and idea about what he/she will read in your essay. My thesis statement: The teacher must approve your thesis statement. She ll help you revise it, and you will re-write it below. My revised thesis statement: Mrs. Pile s approval: 2

3 INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH Things to remember: This paragraph needs a good opening! Grab your audience s attention! This paragraph contains your thesis statement (from the front page). HIGHLIGHT your thesis statement. o Sentence 1 = Attention getter o Sentence 2 = Main idea statement o Sentences 3 4 (and possibly more) = elaboration about topic o Sentence 5 (or later, depending how many sentences are before it!) = Thesis statement 3

(No: me, I, you, we, our, my, etc.) CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE: - Sentence 1: Begin this sentence with a transition (In summary, finally, all in all, to wrap up, etc.) and re-state your main idea in a different way - Sentences 2-5: Briefly mention your three points again, but in a DIFFERENT way. - DO NOT introduce new information in your conclusion!! 7
