1 N E W S L E T T E R Vol ume 26 No. 3 March, 2010 A De cade of For ma tion Test ing: Do s and Don ts and Tricks of the Trade More than a de cade has passed since the in tro duc tion of the third-gen er a tion (pump ing) for ma tion test ing tools. Rep re sen ta tive for ma tion sam ples and pres sures are now pos si ble even in the tough est en vi ron men tal con di tions. These suc cesses come as a re sult of nu - mer ous tri als, fail ures, and learnings. The learnings in clude how to ma nip u - late the avail able tech nol ogy downhole and at sur face to over come ad verse con - di tions. This lec ture will re view the best prac tices, tricks of the trade, and the state of the art tech niques that we have em ployed to avoid fail ures and to suc - cess fully as sess res er voir fluid prop er ties in the early stages of a dis cov ery. Some of the chal lenges that will be dis cussed in clude suc cess ful sam pling of low, un - der-sat u rated hy dro car bon ac cu mu la - tions, as well as how to sam ple low con den sate gas ra tio (CGR) and other near-crit i cal flu ids. These mea sures help in sure proper fluid in put to sys tem se - lec tion and de vel op ment op tions. The lec ture will also dis cuss com mon prob lems that re late to pres sure gra di - ent in ter pre ta tion and its ma jor ef fects on dis cov ery vol umes. The ef fects of wettability and su per charg ing on pres - sure points and how to avoid them will be dis cussed. A new method of pres sure ac qui si tion will be pro posed to avoid these pit falls. It can pos si bly de tect in ac - cu ra cies in as sess ing fluid con tacts from pres sure gra di ents. Fi nally, al ter ations of the PVT sam ples due to com mon mis han dling prac tices will be pointed out. The crit i cal value of for ma tion sam pling and testing to formation evaluation will be demonstrated. Formation testing has come a long way in the last decade. The sub ject mat ter was very well re ceived as it shed a lot of light on the reg - u la tory side of the equa tion. I will be trav el ing to LSU again this week to meet with Mayank Tyagi (Fac ulty Ad vi - sor to Stu dent Chap ter), Lauren Fogarty (Stu dent Chap ter Pres i dent), and Kristen Barrett (Stu dent Chap ter VP) to dis cuss ex ist ing and fu ture op por tu ni ties to work to gether. 5 March, SPE Delta Sec tion On Jan u ary 29th, five SPE mem bers vis - ited Mor gan City Jr. High to dis cuss oil and gas to five 8th grade Earth Sci ence classes. We be gan by in tro duc ing our - selves ex plain ing our in di vid ual paths lead ing to a ca reer in the Pe tro leum In - dus try. Greg ory Newman, an op er a tor for a Chev ron plat form who is earn ing his Pe tro leum Ser vices B.S. de gree at Nicholls State Uni ver sity, took the op por tu nity to share his re gret not earn ing an en gi neer - ing de gree straight out of high school. He ex plained the value of an en gi neer ing de - gree, which led him to re turn to school years later. He en cour aged the stu dents to do well in high school and go straight to college. Delta Energy4me Corner: Morgan City Jr. High School How ever, they were baf fled to learn that their desk chairs, as pi rin, news pa per ink, shav ing cream, and even lip stick are pe - tro leum de rived. col ored cake lay ers and mapped out their view of the en tire res er voir. Leon Mills-Dawson, grad u at ing this spring from Nicholls State, re lated cake lay ers to shale, lime stone, and sed i men tary rock, which the stu dents had learned about last se mes ter. They rec og nized that by com - bin ing with their neigh bors core sam ple, they could see a clearer pic ture. Then, the cake was cut into slices to re veal the an - swer and en joy the sweet taste of res er - voir cake. Al though messy, this ac tiv ity brought ex cite ment to the class room and dem on strated that find ing oil is chal leng - ing and fun! Next, we pre sented a few power point slides from the energy4me pre pared pre - sen ta tion dis cuss ing the be gin ning of oil at Spin dle top, how tech nol ogy and re - search de vel oped meth ods to ef fi ciently har ness the en ergy, lead ing to re fin ing oil to cre ate prod ucts we use to day. Dr. John Grif fin, a pro fes sor at Nicholls State, pre - sented in Span ish, a lan guage he learned while trav el ing to South Amer ica, ex - plain ing that pe tro leum en gi neer ing jobs ex ist around the world. When asked where the stu dents use pe tro leum prod - ucts in their day-to-day life, they thought of the gas o line in cars and lawnmowers. Amy Dubetz, a Chev ron Fa cil i ties En gi - neer, tested the stu dents en ergy IQ with fact or fic tion ques tions from the energy4me kit. She stumped ev ery class ask ing, Is oil found un der the earth in large, black, gooey pools? This mis con - cep tion was fol lowed with the ex pla na - tion that a res er voir is anal o gous to a sponge, where oil re sides in the pore space. Stu dents an swer ing ques tions were re warded with prizes. Class wrapped up with a hands on ac tiv ity to dem on strate the en gi neer ing chal - lenges and value of in for ma tion in oil field ex plo ra tion. I dis played a choc o late frosted cake in an alu mi num dish, which rep re sents a res er voir, and ex plained that you don t know any thing about in side the cake. The stu dents were given clear straws, which they used to drill for in - for ma tion by in sert ing the straw and ro - tat ing it down to pull out a core sam ple of cake. The 2010 FIRST Ro bot ics Bayou Re gional is com ing to New Or leans on March 4th, 5th, and 6th (Thurs day, Fri day, and Sat ur day), and we would love to have your help as a vol un teer! Annette Oertling, Ph.D. - Vol un teer Co or di na tor SNEAK PRE VIEW OF APRIL 2010 TALK Dynamic Stochastic Modeling A New Economic Method for Old Fields - Lee Hightower Many oil com pa nies with ma ture fields on the Gulf of Mex ico shelf face a host of chal lenges: (1) de clin ing pro duc tion from those fields; (2) higher ex penses to main tain de te ri o rat ing fa cil i ties, (3) greater po ten tial li a bil i ties be cause of more vol a tile op er at ing con di tions in the Gulf, and (4) lower Wall Street val u - a tions as plen ti ful non-con ven tional op por tu ni ties com pete for lim ited cap i - tal. In this en vi ron ment, ex it ing the off - shore busi ness may seem to be a log i cal de ci sion. How ever, many ma ture GOM shelf fields still con tain mul ti ple small pros - pects with ad ja cent and/or stacked po - ten tial tar gets. These pros pects have not at tracted as much cap i tal or hu man re - sources as larger pros pects in deeper wa - ters or as non-con ven tional plays. One rea son may be that com pa nies eval u a - tion practices cannot properly evaluate these smaller and highly in ter re lated tar gets. Many widely-used eval u a tion pro cesses were orig i nally de signed to eval u ate sin gle, rel a tively large tar gets with straightforward development sce - nar ios. A more dy namic eval u a tion ap - proach is nec es sary to un der stand and eval u ate the many pos si ble de vel op - ment op tions for these shelf pros pects, where each po ten tial sce nario re quires a dif fer ent de vel op ment strat egy and each pos sesses dif fer ent risks and un cer tain ties. Dy namic Sto chas tic Mod el ing (DSM) is an emerg ing meth od ol ogy that has been successfully applied to evaluate complex op por tu ni ties such as these. This unique ap proach ef fec tively mod els in ter re lated tar gets by (1) in cor po rat ing the dif fer ent n cer tain ties for each tar get, (2) con sid - er ing the cor re la tions among dif fer ent tar gets; (3) gen er at ing many pos si ble sce nar ios given the com bi na tions of op - por tu ni ties, un cer tain ties and cor re la - tions, (4) cre at ing learn ing as each sce nario un folds by in cor po rat ing new (but im per fect) in for ma tion as it be come avail able, and (5) mod el ing fu ture ac - tions that would be taken, and the sub se - quent out comes of those ac tions, based on what is learned in each sce nario. Un like other kinds of mod els such as de - ci sion tree, the DSM model au to mat i - cally ex pands or con tracts based on how de vel op ment sce nar ios un fold. As a re - sult, the model can be eas ily up dated as new in for ma tion be comes avail able or as strat e gies are mod i fied. The DSM method also can in cor po rate a rap idly emerg ing risk-man age ment frame work known as eco nomic cap i tal anal y sis. Eco nomic cap i tal anal y sis serves as a more ac cu rate way to eval u ate in vest ments be cause it re quires that the re turn on an in vest ment be ad justed to re flect the risk ex po sure to the firm cre - ated by that in vest ment that is, its true cor po rate cost. In clud ing this frame - work within DSM al lows de ci sion-mak - ers to better al lo cate re sources among other com pet ing in vest ments with dif - fer ent risk pro files. WHAT YOU MISSED! We had one of such meet ings in Jan u ary and we were hon ored to have Da vid Dykes Chief, Of fice of Safety Man age ment for the GOM, talk to our group on US MMS OCS Civil Pen al ties Pro gram and the An nual Per for mance Re view Process 17 peo ple at tended this Jan u ary Tech ni cal Fo cus Group meet ing. This was the first time in at least 5 years that a reg u la tory topic was pre sented at the TFG meet ing. Mr. Dykes de liv ered a pol ished and well or ga - nized pre sen ta tion of the MMS OCS Civil Pen al ties pro gram and the An nual Op er a tor Per for mance Re view pro cess. Sta tis ti cal data from the GOM re gion were shown, and in - ter est in the pre sen ta tion was dem on strated by the post pre sen ta tion ques tions and re - quest for a copy of the pre sen ta tion. A clear mes sage to take from the pre sen ta tion is that any in ci dent of non-com pli ance (INC) must al ways be viewed as hav ing the po ten tial for a sub se quent civil pen alty, and prompt fol - low-up com mu ni ca tion and en gage ment from an op er a tor with the MMS is pru dent. 8 SPE Delta Sec tion March, 2010 Guidelines for Administration of The Gus Archie Memorial Scholarship Schol ar ship The Gus Archie Me mo rial Schol ar ship is sup ported by the Archie Fund of the SPE Foun da tion. Each year the SPE Foun da tion, work - ing through the SPE Sec tion Schol ar ship Sup port Pro gram, as well as work ing with in di vid ual can di dates, awards the Archie Schol ar - ship to the most out stand ing stu dent at tend ing uni ver sity for the first time. The cur ric u lum must lead to an un der grad u ate de gree in pe tro leum en gi neer ing. The Archie Fund en dows each schol ar ship at $6,000 per year. The pro gram pro vides sup port of an in di vid ual stu dent through up to four years of uni ver sity study, pro vided that he/she makes sat is fac tory ac a demic prog ress. Stu dents ro tate off the pro gram af ter 4 years of schol ar ship sup port.
