5 Chapter 1: The Mysterious Message 5 Henry My name is Henry. I live in Germany with my uncle. Uncle Hardwigg My uncle s name is Uncle Hardwigg. My uncle is a scientist.

6 6 Uncle Hardwigg found a secret in a book. The secret told about a special volcano. The volcano was in Iceland. This volcano has a tunnel. The tunnel goes deep into the earth.

7 7 Uncle Hardwigg wanted to find that tunnel! It would take us on a journey. This book is all about that journey.

8 8 Chapter 2: Climbing Mount Sneffels I was worried about this journey. I thought the volcano might erupt. Uncle said that it would not erupt.

9 9 I thought there might be hot lava. Uncle didn t know about the lava. In Iceland, we met Hans. Hans was a strong man. Hans would help us on our journey. Hans

10 10 food Uncle Hardwigg bought food. We took food for six months.

11 compass 11 guns Uncle Hardwigg bought tools. He bought a compass for directions. He bought guns just in case. He bought rope for climbing. rope

12 12 We each took one bottle of water. Uncle said that the tunnel had water. Hans led us down into the volcano. Then we saw the tunnel!

13 Chapter 3: Into the Earth 13 My uncle took out the long rope. Hans went down first. I went last. The walls of the tunnel were beautiful! Soon we came to the bottom. Uncle said that we should go east.

14 14 We walked for three days. Then the tunnel ended. We had gone the wrong way! And now our water was almost gone.

17 39 About the Original Author Jules Verne was born in 1828 in France. Verne wrote at a time when people still traveled in carriages that were pulled by horses. But Verne was always thinking about the future. In his books, he wrote about things that hadn t been invented yet, like tanks, and helicopters. Verne wrote twenty novels. His books have been made into plays, movies, and television shows, and they have also been translated into many different languages for people all over the world to enjoy.
