6 6 Chapter 1: The Mysterious Message Henry Uncle Hardwigg My name is Henry. I live with my uncle. His name is Uncle Hardwigg. Uncle Hardwigg likes old books. This old book has a secret! he said. What is the secret? I asked him. I don t know, said Uncle Hardwigg.

7 I looked at the old book. I thought and thought. I know the answer! I said. I know the secret! What is it, Henry? asked my uncle. The secret is about a volcano! I said. We can go down into the volcano! 7 a volcano

8 8 Chapter 2: Climbing Mount Sneffels compass food water gun My uncle wanted to go to the volcano. He wanted to go right away. We will need a compass, said my uncle. A compass will help us find our way. We will need food and water. We will need a gun, he said. A gun? I said.

9 9 Hans We found a man to help us. His name was Hans. Hans took us to the volcano. Look, Henry! said my uncle. We found the way into the volcano. What about lava? I said. A volcano can have hot lava! lava

10 10 Chapter 3: Into the Earth rope We used a long rope. We used a rope to go down. We went down into the earth. Down, down to the center of the earth! Look at the lava, I said. This lava is hard, not hot. This lava is very pretty!

11 11 We went deep into the volcano. But after three days, we stopped. This space is too small, said Hans. This can t be the right way, he said. Let s go back, said my uncle. We need water, I said. We are almost out of water.

13 27 About the Original Author Jules Verne was born in 1828 in France. Verne wrote at a time when people still traveled in carriages that were pulled by horses. But Verne was always thinking about the future. In his books, he wrote about things that hadn t been invented yet, like tanks, and helicopters. Verne wrote twenty novels. His books have been made into plays, movies, and television shows, and they have also been translated into many different languages for people all over the world to enjoy.
