1 March 29, 2018 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Science- Announces Rally on, 2018 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the West Capital, NY The Science, a nationwide movement advocating for evidence-based science policies that serve all communities, will have its second annual event in the Capital Region on Saturday,, 2018, which is Citizen Science Day. In an era where the United States has withdrawn from the Paris climate accord, expanded off-shore drilling, issued government-censorship of climate change facts, halted the National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices, and overturned the 2015 Open Internet Order (net neutrality), the need to advocate for evidence-based science in public policy is more important than ever. More than one million people, in more than 600 locations across all seven continents joined together last year, on April 22, 2017, for the largest event in support of science in history. In, several thousand attendees marched peacefully to support science initiatives and express the need for sound scientific policies at all levels of government. The organizers of the 2017 Science established CapSci, a non-profit organization advocating for science in the Capital Region. CapSci is using the momentum of last year s march to hold our political leaders accountable for passing equitable, evidence-based policies that serve all people. We are a sister march of the National Science taking place in Washington DC; more than 175 sister marches around the world will participate on. The Science is a family-friendly celebration of science and rally for sciencebased policy. The event will feature local scientists who apply science to improving our understanding of social issues. Confirmed speakers include: Congresman Paul Tonko, Congressman, US House of Representatives, Keynote Speaker Senator Neil Breslin, New York State Senator Dr. Gina Gould, President, Museum of Innovation and Science (misci) and the Dudley Observatory Dr. Ashok Ramasubramanian, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Union College Dr. Steven Leibo, Sherman David Spector Professor in the Humanities, Sage Colleges Dr. Nurcan Atalan Heliche, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies and Sciences, Skidmore College Dr. Lisa Campo-Englestein, Associate Professor, Alden March Bioethics Institute, Medical College.

2 In addition to speeches and a 0.6 mile march through the New York State capital, the event will feature numerous family-friendly hands-on science activities like Meet a Scientist, which sends kids on a scavenger hunt to meet and talk to scientists at the march. We believe it is our responsibility to hold all policy makers from school board members to mayors accountable for developing and enacting evidence-based policy. The Science is nonpartisan. Our goal locally and nationally for the Science event is to: Raise awareness, influence change, and advocate for science; Encourage elected officials to adhere to evidence-based policy; Promote scientific research and innovation that directly supports our health, education, environment, advances in technology, economic growth, etc. Advocate for STEM education as an essential part of school curriculum.
